Introduction

Kulraj Singh Salh
COO

Guards Red, Manual, 4 wheel drive, 3.6L twin-spark flat 6, a lot to love about this 964.

Coming from a private collection of classic and sports cars, this stunning Guards Red Porsche 911 (Type 964) is a sight to behold. Having covered just 94,000 miles in its 30 year life, this particular example has been finished in an "RS" homage, with its Cup wheels, RS door cards, and Recaro racing seats. Coming with a full history file documenting the mileage over the years, you can understand why it's been stored away over time.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Kulraj after meeting Colin the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

A car collector, Colin has a range of performance cars from "Fast Fords" to "RS Audi's".

This particular car, Colin had chased for some time. Working with the owner before the previous, he spent some time trying to acquire it from them, but the opportunity didn't materialise in the end. Many years later Colin spotted the car, and on his second attempt he managed to acquire it! With his collection having grown to a considerable size, he feels the time is right having enjoyed the 964 to find it a new home.

GET YOUR VALUATION

Exterior

The distinctive body coloured bumpers were both an evolution and step change from the previous 911 design.

Wheels and Tyres

The Porsche Cup wheels on this car are part of a few tweaks given to the car to give it the RS look.

They are in very good condition, we only noticed some slight scrapes on the rear nearside wheel, the tyres look great too.

Bodywork

This C4 in its Coupe form comes with an electric sunroof. You'll see in the exterior review video, we didn't spot any corrosion on the bodywork, the panel gaps and shut-lines looking great across the car.

There is a slight indentation on the offside front wing as captured in the video, and you'll see in the interior review video that the B pillars still have the original "nipples" in the bodywork showing originality.

Paint

The Guards Red paint, a classic Porsche colour, is in very good condition. Even in finish and colour across all the panels, there is a minor stone chip on the front of the car, you need to be looking very very hard to spot any imperfections.

Glass and Trim

All look excellent on this example. This is a car that has been well cared for in the correct manner over the years, and hence why the trim all looks great even to this day.

The gas strut in the bonnet doesn't quite have the life in it that it used to, and so the new owner will need to replace that.

Interior

A driver focused cabin as ever from Porsche, the rev counter front and centre as always.

Seats and Carpets

Following on from the RS theme to this C4, it's been fitted with Recaro race seats, and the leather door cards with storage have been replaced with the RS style versions shedding weight.

The seats and carpets all present in fine condition, the seats not suffering from any wear etc.

Dashboard

The dashboard and particularly the dials look very fresh on this example. Porsche's cluster of dials with the rev counter centre and larger give you a real sense of race pedigree when in the drivers seat.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

This example has been fitted with a Momo steering wheel, the leather on this looking in good condition.

The gearstick for the manual box looks to be original, some wear on the leather as pictured, take a look at the interior review video to see both the steering wheel and gearstick close up.

Mechanics

Fitted with a 3.6L twin-spark flat 6, pushing out 247BHP to all 4 wheels, controlled through a manual gearbox.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine on the 964 came with a number of changes, the twin-spark in particular focused on reducing emissions in line with changing regulations. Still though, it's that classic Porsche 911 air-cooled flat 6.

The 964 also introduced the Tiptronic automatic gearbox, this example though is fitted with a traditional 5 speed box, allowing for those heel and toe experiences that many drivers love.

Suspension and Brakes

Colin informs us that the car handles just as you would expect a 964 coupe to, a real drivers car. The 964 came with ABS as standard to improve the safety of the car.

The Drive

The Carrera 4 was the first introduction of 4 wheel drive to the 911. Porsche still pushed 69% of the power to the rear wheels though, so you didn't loose that 911 feeling, yet gained the extra traction on the front.

Electrics and Other

Colin informs us that everything on the car works as it should do, such as the electronically operated spoiler that engages on speeds over 50MPH.

History and Paperwork

A well kept history folder, documenting the cars life and importantly tracing the mileage over the years.

More recently the car has been SORN, being part of a private collection of cars. A fresh MOT is being carried out on the car, so that the new keeper will be able to drive the car away.

Couple more questions: the 2017 invoice From Bavaria mentions oil leaks from oil cooler supply pipes,Power steering rack and rocker covers. These are expensive to sort out but there isn’t any invoice for these repairs, are there any? The newest invoices uploaded do not refer to the inner wing repairs, just random paintwork at a later date. Can you confirm what went on with that, and whether there are any more invoices to upload??

Hi Colin. The original stickers on the door shuts are missing, usually due to paintwork being carried out. Has the car had a respray, and if not, what is the reason for the paintwork on both door shuts? What repair work has been carried out on the bodywork regarding accident/rust? Also, how does the car drive, engine and gearbox work ok without noises? Any smoke from exhaust? Thanks

Thanks for that. Do you have the invoice for this body work to show the details of the job? And do you have the invoice for the repair work on the damaged wheel/inner wheel arch as the one supplied is an estimate.
Thanks

Hi James, we’ve updated the listing with these invoices Colin has photographed and sent to us, I think I must have missed them when I did the photography. They are at the end of the history/paperwork gallery. Best, Kulraj

Colin, reading through the bodywork invoices my understanding is that this was more of an external refresh then any accident damage so to speak, is this your understanding of the history?

Thanks

There doesn’t seem to be any information on the reason for the bodywork, wheel replacement and geometry work??

Colin, got a few questions if I may.

– Given this is a 1990 car has the flywheel been upgraded from the notorious FB DMF to the later LUK unit?
– Is the car HPI clear?
– I see in the history file there are various invoices for paint work and accident repair to the front end. Do you know how serious this damage was?
– Other than the interior, does the car have any other notable modifications?
– Looks like a lot of work has been done over the years chasing oil leaks. Is it fairly leak free now?
– Has the latest MOT flagged up any advisories that will be outstanding at point of sale?

Thanks

Just another couple of questions that have sprung to mind watching the videos.
– is the private plate excluded from the sale?
– jacking points look abit rough in the video. Is this superficial or are they Rotten?

Hi Colin, can I ask a couple of questions on the 964 please, firstly are they receipts for any major engine work, top end rebuild etc ? any detail of when the clutch as last changed, is the clutch light ? heavy, oil leaks, ? head leak as do the cam covers and various pipes generally, paint : have you had any done, looks good in the photos but difficult to tell without a proper look see, anything else that would be of interest ? also are you a R2 member, ? I know a few of them as was RO for R1 for a while, kind regards scott. (ps, have had 3 964’s so I know what they are like in general, issues etc, etc),
