Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Photographer and Editor

Worthy of the Porsche name, the 944 S2 Cabriolet is a practical, robust and stylish solution to open-air motoring.

Considered the best front-engine Porsche of all time, the 944 was Porsche's entry-level model taking over the 924 in 1982. Improving on the earlier model, with incremental updates and more power, the naturally aspired 944’s true value came with the arrival of the smoother S2 models. Fitted with a new aluminium block 3.0-litre engine, it was lighter and offered much more power than before. The five-speed gearbox was mounted at the rear, giving the 944 near-perfect 50/50 weight distribution. The chassis was well sorted to deal with this power and the added sophistication and refinement on top of the established handling poise and comfort.

As mechanically robust as any German executive car, the appeal was its modest servicing costs, practical and stylish interior and galvanised body. When new the 944 S2 was considered a perfect entry point to the Porsche family, and it still fulfils that role. For the last two years of production, Porsche increased its appeal further by introducing the Cabriolet version in 1989.

This late model 944 S2 Cabriolet was registered in January 1992, making it one of the last RHD models produced. It is finished in Crystal silver metallic with a blue leather interior. It has an impressive service history, only ~56,251 on the clock and has only had three owners since it was new. It was last serviced 700 miles ago and comes with two sets of keys and an MOT to June 2025.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Danny the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Its last registered owner kept the car for an impressive 22 years.

Danny obtained the car recently, after being impressed with its long-term ownership and positive service history. Handling cars that have been looked after with plenty of appeal in the classic car market, Danny has also checked over the car before listing it. He will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Solid and smartly presented, some attention will be needed on the sills but ultimately worth the effort.

Wheels and Tyres

The alloy wheels show light signs of age on the rims but are still smart.

The front tyres are branded Jinyu and Roadx, with both rear tyres being Toyo Proxes. All are under 5 years old and have good even tread.

Bodywork

The engine bay is solid with decent suspension mounts. The floor pan, wheel wells and boot floor are also good, but both sills will need investigation.

The exterior generally presents well, with a few issues to consider. The wheel arch lips show mild corrosion close to the sills, and the lower nearside wing has a fracture. The rear valance has a few rust spots coming through too.

The panels are flush to the body and aside from a handful of minor and treatable dents on the bonnet, the car is free of panel damage. All doors open and close without issue.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The Crystal silver metallic paint has a good consistency with a decent lustre. Getting closer to the car, there are several surface blemishes across the body, a minor scuff on the boot lid, the nearside has light scuff marks on the front bumper corner, front wing, door and rear wing to the rear bumper - they have not damaged the metal work and could potentially polish out.

There are also a couple of light chips on the nose and nearside rear wing. There is also evidence of paint over-spray in places.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass is all in good shape, with decent seals. The nearside quarter-light trim shows light wear. The headlamps and driving lights are good. There is a crack on the offside rear lens. Both rear lamp seals also show age.

The body trim is tidy, with chips on the nearside door strip. The driver's side door mirror is also scuffed. The bumpers, and under-spoilers are well mounted and flush to the body. The nearside corners of both bumpers have light scuff marks.

Interior

The interior is in need of some TLC, but it's all complete and free of rips and tears.

Seats and Carpets

The blue leather seats, particularly the driver's seat would benefit from a re-connolising.

The cabin carpets are all dry and complete, with some evidence of colour fading in places and are generally damage-free. The driver-side mat has worn somewhat, but the others are in good shape. The boot carpet has a few holes and wear around the battery compartment but has no evidence of water ingress.

Dashboard

The dashboard padding has a few faint surface marks on the passenger side which would probably respond to a deep clean and leather treatment. The facia panelling, centre console and a few buttons show mild signs of age. All functions are said to work, although the digital clock will need replacing. The dials are clear to read.

The lower section of the centre console by the passenger footwell has a few drilled holes. The centre console storage box lid would benefit from a replacement. The door cards are decent, with no rips noted on the headlining.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is in line with the car's age, with some minor wear noted. The gear lever and gaiter while not ripped, show wear.

Mechanics

Routine servicing and regular use should add confidence to its mechanical dependability.

Engine and Gearbox

Mechanically the 944 appears to be in good health, as measured by the straightforward cold-start process. The engine fired up immediately with no unwanted noises, vibrations or strains from the engine. All dashboard warning lights stayed off and the exhaust remained free of unwanted fumes.

The engine presentation suggests sympathetic maintenance, there is mild age-related wear on some metal components but all hoses and ancillaries look good. The exhaust trim is damaged, but the unit itself appears to be undamaged. The car was leak-free during our visit.

The gearbox operates without negative feedback, engaging gears cleanly with a good clutch feel.

Suspension and Brakes

The car absorbs the road with no unwanted noises and tracks straight. The braking was problem-free, feeling reassuring and free of judders or squeals.

The Drive

The 944 is known for its balanced handling and excellent grip. The smooth 3.0-litre engine added finesse to the car, particularly suited to the cabriolet.

The test drive didn’t reveal any problems with the engine, it remained smooth and didn’t emit any unwanted noises. Powering through the gears, there were no unwanted sounds from the wheels, and no negative feedback from the steering when braking or turning.

The performance is positive, the car has plenty of torque and pulls smoothly. There are no reports of problems with the engine temperature or oil pressure.

Electrics and Other

The car is fitted with an after-market JVC FM/MP3 Player. The roof operation is fully functional, the motors don’t appear to strain although it was a little noisy. The fabric roof itself is in good condition, showing a clear rear screen and comes with a clean hood cover.

The lights lower and raise smoothly and quietly. The car comes with its original spacesaver spare.

History and Paperwork

Regularly serviced throughout its life, it has seen three new sets of cam and balance belts fitted in the last 25,000 miles.

Registered in January 1992 by Porsche dealer Chariots of St Albans, it comes with its original sales invoice and stayed with its first owner for 10 years after appearing to have been first registered by their company. It was then taken on by its last registered keeper in 2003 and stayed with him until Danny took on the car this year.

The car has 15 service stamps conducted by the main dealer and Porsche specialists. The cam belt and balance belts were changed about 3,000 miles ago and last serviced in 2023. A folder of invoices is included, with the most recent 5 years covering servicing, a new starter motor and sundry items totalling £2,200. Earlier invoices include new rear discs/pads in 2017, a suspension arm in 2013, and a complete set of new engine and steering belts in 2013 and 2006.

There are MOTS certificates back to 2005. It has its complete owner's wallet and booklets and two sets of keys. Its next MOT is due in June 2025. There are also historical V5s tracking back to its previous two owners.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price that the seller will let the car go for. We work with sellers to set realistic reserves in line with market pricing – we don’t take on vehicles with unrealistic pricing. Reserve met / not met labeling may or may not be announced during the auction – this is just like a traditional auction house, i.e. bidders may only know when they’ve been successful at the end of the auction.

If the reserve hasn’t been met at the end of the auction then we work with the highest bidder to try to work out a deal with the seller.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
