Introduction

Glyn Parry
Automotive Photographer

The 993 was launched by Porsche as a replacement for the 964 - they referred to it as “a significant advance, not just from a technical perspective but a visual one too”.

Launched in 1994, the 993 was a completely new design over its predecessor, the 964, with just 20% of the parts carried over from the previous generation. A new engine and completely new suspension set up, with a light alloy subframe and multilink system, eliminated the lift-off oversteer problems.

Throughout the short production run of the 993 from 1994 to 1998, it was available in various options such as the Targa, Turbo, Carrera Coupe, Carrera cabriolet, GT2, Carrera RS and Speedster, whilst also offering the car in rear or all-wheel drive. It offered something for everyone and produced a more civilized car with an improved driving experience.

The particular 1994 convertible model we have here belongs to James, which he's owned and enjoyed for over a decade, and has recently serviced and MOT'd the car - all ready for the new owner of this German classic.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting James the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I purchased the 911 as a car to have some fun in - it has been with me for over a decade and I've loved every minute of driving it.

James has owned his 1994 Porsche 911 Carrera for the past 12 years, after purchasing it as a car to have a bit of fun in. The 12 year ownership has flown by and has been an enjoyable experience for James and the 993.

James has not been getting the time to use the 911 to its full potential in recent years, so he has now decided to part with it.

James will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments below.

Exterior

Finished in arguably the best colour for the car, Polar Silver, the 911 will always be known as one of Stuttgart’s finest for many years to come.

Wheels and Tyres

The wheels on the 911 are of the Turbo style and are in good condition, with no obvious chips to the rims on all corners.

The tyres are matching Avon from around 2013 - they present in good condition with a decent amount of tread.

Bodywork

Walking around the car we see the panel gaps for the doors, boot and bonnet look to be as they should.

The convertible roof is presented in excellent condition and closes nice and tight. James did mention that the roof was replaced prior to him getting the car. Since then, it has always been kept in a heated garage.

Being picky, there is a very small dent to the top of the passenger side quarter, but this is difficult to see if you’re not in the right light.

Please see the gallery for more detailed images.

Paint

Polar Silver is arguably the best colour to show off the 993 - it just seems to suite the car like no other colour.

In general, the paint is in very good condition, with just the odd age related mark here and there as you would expect. We think it would be worth having the car machine polished to show the car off to its full potential.

The edge of the driver's door does have some slight chips to the paint, which shouldn't take much to touch up. There is some slight surface corrosion to the bottom of the wings caused by stone chips, and also a small amount to the top of the windscreen frame on the passenger side, where the roof meets the frame.

Please see the media gallery for detailed photographs and a video of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass appears all nice and clean around the car. A new windscreen has been fitted at some point and so this has no obvious scratches to mention. The windscreen trim and trim on the side windows all look to be in good condition. The plastic window in the roof is in good condition with just some light scratches.

The headlights and indicators to the front have some light chips and the rear lights are in good condition with no splits or cracks.

Interior

Body hugging bolsters hold you nice and tight when you take the Porsche out for a spirited drive.

Seats and Carpets

The interior of this 993 is original and honest and with a bit of TLC the new owner can really improve it.

As you can see in the pictures, the seats in the 911 have some wear to the leather, with the driver's seat being the most affected, but with bolsters of this size it's inevitable that at some point they will wear through. The bolster has been repaired with a patch stitched in. The passenger seat and the rear seats are in good condition with just some age related marks.

The carpets in the passenger area are generally clean with some small marks.

The boot area has the carpets in place which look to have no real wear to them, and under them the spare wheel is present.

Dashboard

The dashboard, finished in blue, is in good condition. The instruments are all nice and clean with no corrosion noticed on any of the bezels. The odometer is displaying a reading of ~123,790

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed shots.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Importantly the steering wheel is original but it does have some wear - it has lost around 50% of its blue colour and we think it would benefit from a retrim. This is an inexpensive improvement of a couple of hundred pounds with a specialist and would really lift the interior - Royal Steering Wheels are a highly recommended company for this.

Moving down to the centre console, the gear knob numbers are clear and visible. The leather does appear to be worn and could be remedied at the same time as the steering wheel if the new owner wishes.

Please review the interior media pack for a closer look.

Mechanics

3.6-litre developed from the massively popular 964 ensures this 993 is enough to entertain even the most advanced drivers.

Engine and Gearbox

James reports that he Porsche sounds perfect. As you flick the key, the 3.6-litres, straight-six fires into life and purrs away nicely. There are no noises creeping in that shouldn't be there. A recent service at 123,792 miles, carried out at a local Porsche specialist, ensures the car is ready for its new custodian.

The gearbox in the 911 is a six-speed manual, which incidentally is the first Porsche to receive this. The change is reported to be smooth and crisp and the car pulls well through all of the gears.

Update 23/08 - last week we mentioned that James said there was some very light burning oil smell / smoke coming from the top of the heat exchanges. We thought it may be due to a drip coming from the cam covers, however, no oil was shown on his garage floor. As we all know, this is a common issues and easy to rectify. However, James took the car on a 150 mile trip over the weekend and no smell / smoke was observed. When James picked up the car from Zentrum back in 2019 he only did about 8 miles back to his garage and the car sat for a long time / not used. So it's very likely that there was some residual oil on top of the heat exchangers that hadn't been wiped off by Zentrum. If this is not done then oil collects and can take a while to burn off.

Suspension and Brakes

James has attended to any work required to the suspension over the years. Back in 2019 there was a small leak from one of the dampers and James took the car to Zentrum - he spent £2,700 on the car including two new shockers, track rod end and alignment.

The cross drilled brake discs look to be in good order, with no lip to the edges of the discs.

They are reported to stop the car nice and straight with no brake judder.

The Drive

Driving the German sports car has given James many miles of happy motoring in his 12 year ownership of the 993 Porsche - never failing to turn heads as the distinctive sound of the 3.6 litre roars past you.

With pretty much everything in good order, other than a few cosmetic touches, the 993 is ready to be enjoyed by the new owner.

Electrics and Other

A JVC head unit has been fitted to provide the in-car entertainment.

All the switchgear is in good condition with no obvious wear to the lettering of the buttons, and everything is reported to be working as it should.

James has had the air conditioning re-gassed and it's working.

You can see more detailed images in the photography sections.

History and Paperwork

The Porsche comes with a good number of service stamps carried out by main dealers or independent Porsche specialists.

The service stamps are backed up by invoices for parts and services carried out - please see the history file.

As well as the service book there are the drivers hand books and two reading books on Porsches, along with old MOT certificates.

You'll see from the mileage history that the odometer stopped at 123,790 in 2017 - James has not looked into this or remedied, so it's for the new owner to look into. Of course James has not used the car much since that time but please bear this in mind at the reading is not correct.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and the vehicle is HPI clear.

If this is not done then the collected oil on top as a result of changing the cam covers can take a while to burn off. It’s always best to put a rag on top of the heat exhangers when doing this job to avoid this.

I know as I’ve done this many time on my own 3.2 when adjusting the valves!
