Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

The 964 offers the perfect compromise between old and new skool Porsche.

Referred to as the 964 series, it was a natural evolution over its predecessor and despite similar visual cues, it was a considerable update that combined the character of the original with a modernised ‘90s acceptability. This included the shift over to coil springs and the notable addition of ABS. Options included the Tiptronic automatic transmission and all-wheel drive for the first time. Its main feature, asides from the all-new bodywork and overhauled interior, was the new air-cooled engines. As a result, it’s often said that the 964 offers the perfect compromise between old and new skool Porsche - for better or for worse. All models are great to drive and boast the classic styling, which is why the demand for these cars becomes stronger which each passing year.

Tom's 1993 Carrera 2 is the standard 2 wheel drive manual version and comes with a stack of paperwork and 22 years careful but active ownership. We should point out the pink elephant in the room (not literally of course) and get the distinctive colour out of the way. Known as Raspberry Red on paper, and in the flesh the car is very appealing and the rare colour joins a series of a fascinating group of Porsche colour palettes from the era.

The 964 C2 Coupé was one of the most popular of this series, so the rare hue and provenance of this well looked after example gives it a head start over the other cars that are currently on the market. The car comes with factory air conditioning and is finished off with 18" Turbo alloys.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn Parry after meeting Tom the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've had this car for so long that it feels like part of the family - I'll be sad to see it go but I just don't use it much these days.

Tom is selling his car simply due to lack of use and the demands of his other classic car. Having owned the car for 22 years he has used and enjoyed it as a long-distance tourer, having travelled across Europe in it. However, his average mileage since the start of the Millenium has rarely exceeded 4,000 miles a year.

GET YOUR VALUATION

Exterior

The high gloss paintwork distracts you from the excellent overall condition of the bodywork.

Wheels and Tyres

The 18" Turbo alloy wheels are in excellent condition with no major scuffing or kerbing. The Continental tyres are well within the legal tread limits.

Bodywork

Overall the bodywork is in very good and straight condition, with equal panel gaps and factory finish fit which is tight.

There's some small signs of corrosion on the near-side rear wing together with typical 964 rust bubbles around the base of the windscreen. The off-side sill plates show signs of light scraping, but this is only noticeable from very low down. Please see video.

Paint

A unique and rare paint finish in the Porsche colour of "Rasberry Red Metallic" (83E) is excellent, with a deep lustre and shine throughout the car.

There are very minor signs of imperfections on both doors that looks to be lacquer - only noticeable when you look very closely.

The rear bumper shows very slight signs of cracking on the paint which is typical for 964's and there are no major stone chips up front.

Glass and Trim

No issues with the condition of the rubber and glass, no major rips and tears on the door or glass rubbers. The glass is in very good condition with no noticeable impediments.

Interior

The interior underwent a subtle but welcome upgrade for the 964 series, but still have that driver focused 911 feel.

Seats and Carpets

The light coloured seats and carpets show signs of ageing which is to be expected, but they are in great condition from a support perspective having had the cushions etc replaced (see the invoices). The rear seats are in very good condition too. There are no issues with the headling. Door cards are typical for the age of the car. There are no signs of leaks or dampness inside, and the floor mats also have been replaced relatively recently.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in very good condition, with no splits or cracks. The instrument binnacle is good too, with no damage.

All instruments are said to be fully functional.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel condition is appropriate for a quality item of this age, with some evidence of minor wear.

The gearstick is in good condition.

Mechanics

The 964 engine represented one of the biggest advances in Porsche history.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine cold start reveals no issues, no smoke from the engine or exhaust, with no engine warning lights coming on. The engine presentation is good, with all compoments looking clean and showing evidence of regular maintenance.

Suspension and Brakes

The brakes have plenty of life left in them, with the pads and discs having been changed in the last couple of years (see invoices). The aluminium callipers look in good order - suspension components and the underside are decent too.

The Drive

The 964 series of Porsches are rated among enthusiasts of the brand, thanks to its original design credentials. The car stands up as the typical rear-engined Porsche experience, with expected build quality and reliability.

Electrics and Other

All electrical items are said to be functional, with the electric rear spoiler raising at speeds above 50 mph. The central warning system to alert the driver is also working, but needless to say, possible problems or malfunctions are rare.

History and Paperwork

The car comes with an excellent amount of full-service history, in a car with comparatively low mileage.

The car shows full-service history stamps with owner documents to show the MOT dates. Much of the work and maintenance has been carried out by Porsche specialists, which will be enough to satisfy most potential new owners. Please note the private registration will not be sold with the car.

Evening Tom, is this the original colour from new? How many keys come with vehicle ? Are the wheels the original or off newer model ? Is the engine strong and running sweet with no oil leeks?

Regards
Stuart

Hi again Tom, your Porsche is a uk one? I see from pictures that it has a lot of bubbling all around vehicle possibly needing both sides or even a repaint. I would like to talk to you about your Porsche as not comfortable bidding on it with out discussing or seeing it first.

Stuart
