One of the most engaging 911s to drive and arguably remains a benchmark for all Porsches.

Porsche aficionados will often quote the 993, as the last of the ‘proper’ 911s, but of course, if you drive any of the subsequent incarnations that opinion starts to lose its flavour. However, it can’t be denied, for the absolute purist, the air-cooled 993 is indeed the last of the breed and that fact has only reinforced its standing in the 911 timeline.

The Carrera is often cited as the one to go for, offering the charisma of the air-breathing flat-six soundtrack with plenty of provision for civility, thanks to its multi-link system and a whole new sub-structure including proper heating and air conditioning systems, along with some vital safety enhancements. Compact and agile, it has the refinement of a modern daily, yet still offers the driver complete control without the overbearing nature of driver aids.

This 1997 Carrera 2 S with its standard wide-body look, is presented to you in a stunning ocean blue metallic finish complemented by a grey interior and the all-important manual gearbox. It has an excellent record of servicing and historical spending, with evidence of over £15k’s worth of upkeep. I wanted a proper car to drive; not one to drive me.

A genuine car enthusiast, this is Dave's fourth Porsche and has been ticking off his bucket list of cars to own over the years. Enamoured by the 993's standing as being the last of the air-cooled Porsche, he obtained the car in 2021 and has been using it mostly as an occasional car, attending the odd show, as well as social events.

Exterior

The 993 classic lines are enhanced by its eye-catching metallic ocean blue colourway.

Wheels and Tyres

The 18" Twist style alloys are well presented with the lightest signs of use.

The front tyres are around 6 years old, with the rear items being over 10, all reveal a legal and even tread.

Bodywork

The structure of the car appears to be in a very positive state - the body is free of any form of visual damage, with no dents or discernable corrosion noted.

The panel and bumper fit is flush throughout, with no issues in terms of the opening and closing of the doors. Panel gaps revealed a pleasing cohesion throughout.

Paint

The ocean blue metallic finish is even throughout, with no signs of a colour mismatch. The lustre is very good, with mild signs of swirling noted on some of the flatter panels as the car basked in the sun - a proper machine polish will elevate the level further.

The car displays a small number of minor road-associated marks in places, but again very little to distract the very positive presentation of the paintwork.

Glass and Trim

The glass and its associated seals are intact, with no significant signs of wear.

The trim is intact, with no issues observed regarding the light lenses or detailing.

Please note any signs of marks that show up in the images and video on the nearside area of the windscreen are superficial.

Interior

The grey interior is cleanly presented, with evidence of careful ownership.

Seats and Carpets

The optional sports seats are in good shape, with the expected wear noted on the squab of the driver seat - all are free of rips or significant damage.

The carpets and mats are tidy, with no real signs of wear.

The luggage carpeting is decent with signs that align with the cabin's careful use.

Dashboard

There are no outstanding flaws observed on the dashboard, the facia and padding are free of any significant damage. All of the dials are fully legible, with the switchgear intact.

All controls, including the air-con, are said to function and the car retains its Becker stereo system.

The door cards are intact, with no outstanding damage on the headlining, other than mild surface marks noted around the rear zip.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel condition is above the expectation of a car of this age and displays well in the clean presentation of the cabin.

The gear knob top has a little more in terms of wear, but the gaiter is intact.

Mechanics

The air-cooled heart of the car offers a truly unique supercar experience.

Engine and Gearbox

The cold start video did not suggest any issues with the car's mechanical worthiness, with no spluttering or hesitation once the engine had been fired up and all warning lights remained off as the engine idled. There were no signs of fluid leaks and no engine undulation was noted while the car was on tick-over.

The engine presented very well, evidently well looked after as backed up by its attentive servicing.

The gearbox was demonstrated to function well, engaging gears slickly with a healthy clutch.

Suspension and Brakes

The physical condition of the suspension and braking components appear positive, and on the road did not pose any issues in terms of their function.

No thuds or squeaks were heard during the test drive, with the brakes stopping the car effectively with no drama.

The Drive

The car was given an opportunity to stretch its legs in urban traffic, demonstrating its manners in both built-up traffic and open stretches.

Demonstrating its ability to soak up the roads at low speeds with the steering providing silent operation and free of vibrations at high speeds.

The cabin remained composed, with no outstanding vibrations or unwanted noises coming from the wheels at lower speeds. As a clearing emerged in the traffic, we were treated to a reminder of the air-cooled engine's glorious beat, as the two-stage 'Varioram' induction system kicked in. Composed and effortless, the car felt very confident in its handling.

Electrics and Other

The car was ordered with several optional fittings from the factory, this includes the distinctive Aerokit Turbo aerofoils and the hard-backed sport seats.

In addition, a black version of the classic 5-dial set-up was specified. Dave has mentioned that although the aircon does blow cold, it isn't icy cold.

History and Paperwork

The car has received regular attention, with plenty of servicing and little in terms of mechanical maladies.

Originally registered by Porsche Stourbridge in May 1997, the car shows evidence of regular upkeep and care, as suggested by a recent RAC preparation and Porsche health checklists, passing with flying colours.

Other than service and minor consumables, the car has not needed too much attention in the past decade, having only collected 10,000 miles or so. Prior to this, the main invoices includes radiator parts, clutch kit and full disc and pads brakes at 95K, with over £15,000 worth of invoices included.

It comes with a Certificate of Authentication from Porsche, its original owner's wallet pack including a very good service history full of main dealer and Porsche specialist stamps, a record of previous MOTs and two keys. The MOT is to October 2023.
