Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

The 993 is widely regarded as the pinnacle of the air-cooled Porsche evolution - and what an example we have here for you.

The ultimate version of the air-cooled 911 dynasty arrived in 1993, but despite its familiar power plant, it was a new car from the ground up. For many purists, the 993 is the one to have, combining the original ethics of the 911 dart-like playfulness, with the added confidence of its reassuring multi-link rear suspension.

Serving as a fine entry point to those who often wondered what all the fuss is about, the Carrera, which retains the classic RWD layout is enhanced by its modernised detailing, giving the coupe a much more contemporary appearance. A refined yet genuinely sporting driving experience, the 993 flew the flag almost single-handedly for Porsche before the generation of water-cooled Porsches took on the baton.

This beautifully presented 1997 Tiptronic Carrera 2 has seen just three previous owners and is one of the later examples of the model. Displaying a recorded mileage of only 79,196 miles, it comes complete with an excellent record of stamps and evidence of a £3,700 bill for engine maintenance two years ago, the car has just seen a service and has an MOT to March 2023.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Michael the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Easy to live with day-to-day and it is just so satisfying to drive.

Michael has a history of owning high-end German cars and was looking for a good example of a modern-classic air-cooled Porsche. He chose the 993 as an occasional car to use for long-distance runs but is now looking to move the car on, after two years and not much more than 1000 miles.

Michael will be looking for a possible replacement from the same stable, but with more contemporary gadgets.

Exterior

The highly presentable finish of the Arena Red body subtly changes in differing light - stunning.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with a full set of Michelin Pilot Sport tyres all of which are around 2 years old, there are no issues in terms of thread depth. They're sat on a set of very clean 17" 5-spoke alloys, which are in near-perfect condition.

Bodywork

Looking structurally sound, with no outstanding issues noted underneath - the inner wings, jacking points and boot well are all pleasingly clean. The good news spreads across the exterior of the car, with no notable blemishes noted.

The bumpers are in very good shape too - they're well-mounted on the car which like the rest of the panels is free of issues. The doors open and close without fault.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The Arena Red paint finish retains its allure, with the finish shining true throughout. There are a few light minor scuffs noted on the car but nothing that couldn't be treated.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass is excellent throughout, with clean seals and no suggestion of prolonged outdoor storage.

All of the light lenses are free of damage, with the black beading and trim all looking intact.

Interior

The robust and well-preserved cabin suggests a high level of care from each one of its three previous owners.

Seats and Carpets

The leather seats present well, with typical age-related wear, particularly on the driver's bolster, but all are free of any significant issues.

The carpets are decent, with minimal wear but some signs of age-related discolouration. The car is fitted with black mats.

The front luggage areas are carpeted, all appear to be dry but may need reattaching.

Dashboard

The dashboard is free of significant blemishes, with no cracks observed - it really is very good.

The facia has also retained a good level of care, with minor signs of age noted on the centre console.

The dials and controls present well, with no issues with the binnacle and instruments.

Michael assures us that all of the controls work as expected.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is in very good condition, and similarly, the gear lever is well above the expectations of a car of this age.

The Tiptronic buttons on the steering wheel are fully operational.

Mechanics

The distinctive mechanical cacophony of the flat-six engine sounds as tight as a drum.

Engine and Gearbox

No issues in terms of the cold start occurred, with the engine firing up immediately. It idles sweetly, with no dashboard lights flagging up trouble while the engine was on tick-over.

The car is fitted with the 4-speed Tiptronic gearbox, which is reported to function without any problems and was quiet during operation.

Suspension and Brakes

Please watch the On the Road video to see the car out on a short drive. The ride coped well with the urban roads, tackling the speed humps and uneven surfaces without any notable negative feedback. No knocks or vibrations were observed.

The braking is effective for a car of this age, with no issues with the way the car comes to a halt. The physical condition of the brakes are all positive, with no uneven wear on the discs noted.

The Drive

Typically for modern-era 911, the car is extremely civil when it needs to be, and the drive along the trunk roads didn't reveal any problems. The owner has admitted that they haven't opened up the car in any form of anger, but it pulls well and you would be hard-pushed to guess that you're in a 25-year-old car.

However, Michael did blip the accelerator briefly to remind us that the hollow air-cooled bark was still very much on tap. No unwanted vibration or noises were heard during the 40 mph cruise, with the car handling the turns and corners with plenty of reassuring grip.

The boxer engine remained unintrusive at low speeds, with the slight thrum of the pleasing wuffle in the background reminding you of the cars heritage.

Electrics and Other

The 993 is recognised as the Porsche that retains a link with the 911s roots, without the overburden of the reliance on sensors and computer management.

The owner has told us that car has proved to be trouble-free in terms of electrics and has fitted a Kenwood USB/Bluetooth/DAB player.

History and Paperwork

22 service stamps in the book are backed up with an additional engine bill for £3,700 two years ago - this is one well looked-after car.

The car comes with a comprehensive series of stamps in the service book, with the most recent service carried out in November 2022. The current owner has not needed to carry out much in terms of work, other than work on a stiff park selector and a tight ignition barrel, both of which were resolved last year.

The previous owner spent £3,700 on the car prior to Michael taking ownership of the car in 2020, which includes a new windscreen and seal, and the removal of the engine to resolve a leak issue and address a few other minor maladies. The most recent services does make note of an engine / gearbox leak, however, this was confirmed to us as a very light weep and not significant drip.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

My neighbours car! I have a c4 in arena red also, so I won’t be bidding!
Its a beautiful original example. I’ve inspected it and we’ve chatted over it more times than I care to mention. Its not crash damaged as suggested. It only goes out when it’s dry. I always look out of the office window when he starts it up.

Hi Michael,

I’ve looked closely again at the pictures and I believe I can answer my first question. The car does show signs of having paint on the rear. There appears to be overspray on the engine hood latch on the car and inside the rear drivers side wheel arch.

Interesting that its HPI clear, I can only imagine the repairs were completed outside of an insurance policy.

I would be grateful if you could answer my other queries though.

Many Thanks
Clive

Good Evening Michael,

Does the car show any signs of being painted in the past, e.g under the door handles,
Can you tell me what the marks are on the backs of the front seats, they look like water stains or damage. Also drivers seat front edge damage, what is it? also the drivers side bolster are the marks cracks or just ingrained dirt?
Is there any water transgression into the cabin, both speaker grilles look corroded, does condensation form inside the car?
Looking at the headlining is it lose on the sunroof and how is the rest of it?
Is there water transgression into the boot as i can see water stains on the hardboard. Does condensation form on the underside of the boot lid.
Has the car been or show any signs of rust proofing.
Thank you in advance for your time and i look forward to your reply
Kind Regards
Clive

Thank you for the reply Michael the pictures I was referring to were 9 & 10 of the Mechanics they show over spray, I don’t know enough to say its from the factory or due to the comment made by EdMack, about a crash.
The backs of the seats don’t look like wear and tear there appears to be some staining on them, I thought you may know what they were.
Thank you again for your time.

This car was owned by my Grandad from new, he should be in the log book as E R Mack. He did very few miles in the later years of his ownership after his stroke in 2004. He sold the car after a crash in 2016 and was subsequently off the road for a couple of years which is not mentioned in the history?
