Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

One of the last air-cooled 911, bridging the gap from the old school Porsches to a new era of technological advances.

Arguably the prettiest generation of the 911, the 993 offers a distinctive silhouette with great curves, detailing, and attractive silver alloys which will turn heads wherever you go. This is the "Targa" variant of the 993 body shape with a "greenhouse" system retractable glass roof. The 993 is very potent on the road, it was one of the finest sports cars back in the 90s and still holds it's own today, with the unbeatable tune of the air-cooled block positioned just behind you.

This 911 Targa is coming to market from 6 years of ownership. Finished in "Schwarz Metallic" (L744/Z8) over "Cashmere" (LC) supple leather seats, the MOT runs to 4th May 2023 and was serviced ~900 miles ago. It comes with a comprehensively documented service history, charting the mileage and work between main dealer and specialist service stamps. A full book pack and all the keys, this naturally aspirated flat 6 is ready for a new owner to continue custodianship.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting John the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I knew exactly which 993 spec I was looking for, and this example has been a brilliant car for hot weekends.

Around 6 years ago John was in the market for a specific 993, he was after a Targa in black, contrast leather with excellent service history and paperwork. This example ticked all his boxes, and since he's enjoyed the car thoroughly on weekends or on local tours with his friends.

Over his ownership the cars required very little over and above regular servicing. This Targa is sold with a very comprehensive and well presented history file, which verifies the mileage and shows 8 main dealer stamps, with an additional 11 Porsche specialist services. Over its lifetime ~£25,000 has been spent on upkeep with a new clutch fitted at 77,262 and the leather seats revitalised at ~80,000 miles. John will be happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments below.

Exterior

No fried eggs or LED lights to be found here - it's every purist's dream and a Targa with the iconic 911 silhouette uninterrupted.

Wheels and Tyres

The car was optioned from the factory with the 17" split rim Targa wheels (393), found here and presenting in overall good condition. Look closely, we did notice some very signs of lacquer peel around the edges. John has tried to catch this early, it's should be an easy job for a professional to renovate.

John reports fitted two new rear tyres very recently, these are Dunlop SP Sport Maxx dated 2019, and the front tyres are Michelin Pilot Sport's dated 2014. View the image gallery and video review to see the detail.

Bodywork

The bodywork of this 993 presents in great condition, with all the panel gaps around the car look to align very well, just as you would expect from a sports car of this calibre.

During our visit we didn't spot any obvious dings down the flanks of the car, everything looking crisp and sharp while standing very straight and true. We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in a desirable "Schwarz Metallic", the paint appeared in good condition on our visit, finished to a high standard, with even coverage and colour across each panel.

With the age and mileage of the car, there are a few age related small marks, some small stone chips to the front of the car and some small marks to the leading edges of the doors. Again, please take time to review all the images and videos showing the paint from different angles and reflections, to assess the condition for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this example looks great and in line with the mileage and ownership, we didn't notice any major chips, cracks, or discolouration on our visit. The window seals look good too and in line with the rest of the condition of the car.

The black trim around the window passenger window had some slight corrosion starting to show. View the image gallery to see the detail.

Interior

A fine place to be with it's traditional five-dial instrument cluster and quality materials adorning the cabin.

Seats and Carpets

Equipped with "Cashmere" leather tombstone seats (LC), they look in great condition with the slightest signs of creasing showing. The leather was retreated and refreshed by a professional upholstery company at ~80,000 miles.

The soft leather continues to the door cards, and the car has deep pile carpets with over mats. You can tell this car has been meticulously cared for over its lifetime by a line of enthusiasts. Please take a look at the extensive media for a detailed view of the cabin.

Dashboard

Familiar to anybody who's driven a Porsche before, the classic 5 dial instrument set up greets you as you sit within this car.

The dashboard in this car has no signs of any major damage or scuffs. With no warning lights displayed, the odometer showed a reading of ~88,454 miles on our visit.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original four-spoke Porsche steering wheel is fitted and equipped with an airbag.

The original steering wheel presents in line with the mileage of this car with some slight wear to the outer wheel, the 6 speed manual gearstick looks great too, wrapped in matching leather to the seat upholstery, wear in line with the age and mileage of this 911.

Mechanics

The legendary 3.6L Varioram engine marks the last of the air-cooled power-plants to be seen in a 911, pushing out ~285BHP.

Engine and Gearbox

John reports the car starts from cold with no issues and drives well with its smooth manual 6-speed gearbox powering the rear wheels. Take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting from cold, driving around, and for a closer look underneath the 993, and the smart air-cooled engine bay.

The car was last serviced by a local specialist ~900 miles ago in 2020 before the pandemic hit. There is a comprehensive history file that comes with the car detailing the servicing, which includes a new clutch fitted some ~10,000 miles ago.

Suspension and Brakes

John mentions that the suspension feels good, no unusual knocks or noises present, and we didn't observe anything on our short trip in the car along the twisty local roads.

Please view the mechanical photos and video to see underneath the car.

The Drive

You really need to drive a 993 to understand the raw, potent experience offered accompanied by accurate power-assisted steering, powerful Porsche brakes and a real feeling of security from the multi-link rear suspension.

Electrics and Other

John reports the original radio/cassette has been removed but will be included in the sale. A VDO (to match the instruments) radio with MP3 via USB connection has been installed and wired into the Bose speakers. The cassette tray has also been replaced with a useful coin tray, again the original item to be supplied with the sale.

The original complete toolkit, Porsche air compressor, and space saver spare wheel is also provided in the front trunk of the car, along with the carpets.

John reports two sets of keys with immobilisers are also included, along with the master.

History and Paperwork

The 993 is a special model for many 911 fans, this Targa comes loaded with a comprehensive history and great care by previous owners over the years.

This car is coming out of ~6 years of ownership with John. Take a look at the media to see all the history included within the sale of the car, including the extensive service history files and MOT reports.

Dear John,
Lovely car, I may have missed this amongst the history/ paperwork images, do you know when the brakes were last replaced, both pads and discs?
Best regards,
Nathan

Hi John,

Some of the pictures under the engine appear to show moisture…is that oil or water and Amy clues as to where it originates?
Many thanks
Steve
