Introduction

Colin Bashford
Professional Consigner

With its familiar flat-six bark and four-wheel-drive system, the 996 Carrera 4 instills plenty of confidence in its abilities.

The 911 silhouette has been with us since the 60s. The fifth generation, or 996, arrived in 1997, replacing the 993. With its new "fried egg" headlight design splitting opinion, the engines in the 996 were also changed from air-cooled to water-cooled. A facelift was introduced in 2002, redesigning the looks and slightly increasing the power.

This specific car is a Gen 1 996 Carrera 4. In the back is a 3.4L flat-six engine producing approximately ~296BHP, feeding all four wheels through a Tiptronic gearbox. Coming from approximately 9 months of ownership with our vendor, it has its original service booklet, a healthy amount of invoices, and a current MOT valid until 20.09.2024.

This listing was written from information supplied by Colin after meeting John the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

It's an event every time you take it out; the 996 has a soul.

Having had various sports cars over the years, John bought the 996 approximately nine months ago. He's enjoyed the car during this time, he told us it is a proper driver's car and provides an experience that really involves you.

John has decided to sell the car with us as he is looking for something else and needs to make space. He hopes it will go to someone who will enjoy it as much as he has. John will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Love them or hate them, the "fried egg" headlights give the 996 a distinctive look.

Wheels and Tyres

The original 18" 5-spoke Porsche wheels (option code 413) looked in great condition, finished in a dark grey shade with a red rim protector. We didn't notice any damage to any of the wheels.

The 996 had a pair of Michelin Pilot Sports on the front and a pair of Bridgestone Potenza on the rear. The front pair looked to be in good shape with a decent amount of tread remaining, while the rears appeared a little low on tread. They were still legal, though they also showed some cracking between the treads. We would recommend replacing the rears soon.

Bodywork

The bodywork around the car looked in okay condition. Panel gaps and shut lines appeared good. However, we did notice some visible corrosion around the car. The rear of both front wheel arches, just above the offside rear wheel arch, and on the bottom edge of the engine cover. There were also some small door dings on the passenger door.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The paint finish on the car looked in great condition, with excellent depth and lustre, "Schwarz Metallic" (L744). We didn't notice any swirl marks on the paint, as John mentioned his friend had just polished it for him the day before our visit. However, we did observe an area on the front bumper where the paint was cracking, just under the bonnet. There were also a couple of chips in the paint on the edge of the driver's door and on the handle of the passenger door.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass looked in good condition. We didn't notice any cracks or discolouration in the windscreen, just some small stone chips. The side windows and rear windscreen all looked great.

The lights were in good condition with no cracks, although the lenses were perhaps showing their age. The front Porsche badge looked a little tired, as did the trim that covers the scuttle.

Interior

The black leather interior matches the paintwork on this Carrera 4.

Seats and Carpets

The "Space Grey" (BF) leather seats looked in good condition. They showed some signs of age, with creases in the leather and wear to the bolster of the driver's seat, but for a car of this age and mileage, they looked really good. The rear seats were in good condition too, with only a few small marks.

The grey carpets looked in good condition. The removable carpet mats showed a little bit of staining, but underneath, they looked great.

Dashboard

The dashboard looked in great condition, with all dials clear and the odometer reading approximately 138,540 at the time of our visit.

We didn't notice any rips, tears, or cracks in the dashboard covering. The car featured a Pioneer stereo with a CD changer in the boot.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original Porsche steering wheel was present, with Tiptronic controls on either side. The steering wheel looked in great condition with little wear noted, considering the age and mileage of the car.

The automatic gear selector did show some signs of age, with some scratches noticeable on the top of it.

Mechanics

With a distinctive flat-six bark as you turn the key, the four-wheel-drive system grips the road.

Engine and Gearbox

The 3.4L engine started first time without any fuss, idling smoothly. Out on the road with John, the engine felt powerful, getting up to speed easily, and we didn't notice any unwanted noises coming from it.

Fitted with the Tiptronic gearbox, shifts felt smooth, and again, there were no unwanted noises from the gearbox. Please take a look at the cold start video below to see for yourself the performance of the engine and gearbox.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension on the 996 felt great, firm but comfortable. It handled the corners well, as you'd expect from a 911. We didn't hear any unwanted noises from the suspension while on the road with John.

Braking felt great too, bringing the car to a quick stop without any juddering or pulling on the steering wheel.

The Drive

On the road, the 996 showcased the 911 DNA, with great road handling accompanied by the distinctive bark of the flat-six.

The car felt solid, with plenty of power and smooth gear changes from the Tiptronic gearbox. There were no creaks coming from the cabin either, a testament to the build quality of Porsche, especially impressive for a car with approximately 139,000 miles on the clock.

Electrics and Other

We didn't test everything during our visit, but the clocks and dials were all working as expected. John told us that, to his knowledge, everything was in working order.

History and Paperwork

With 21 service stamps across two books, this Carrera 4 has been well looked after by its previous owners, and comes to market from ~9 month ownership.

First registered by Porsche Centre Glasgow on 03.11.1998, this car required a second service book to keep track of all 21 services over its lifetime. The car has only travelled approximately 11,000 miles in the last 10 years. It comes with its service books, numerous invoices for work carried out, and a stack of MOT certificates from most years. After approximately nine months of ownership with John, it now has a current MOT valid until 20.09.2024.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.
