Introduction

Colin Bashford
Professional Consigner

The 996 generation of 911 first appeared in 1997, replacing the 993 - it's aging beautifully and proving to be a rock solid investment too.

The Turbo came with a beefed up wide body and the twin-turbo 3.6L flat-six produces ~414bhp, through a 4WD powertrain. With the air intakes on the rear quarter, the Turbo is easily distinguished from a Carrera 4S.

This specific car comes to market after ~3 years of ownership with Iain, having covered ~4,000 miles. Finished in a stunning blue, with grey leather interior, it has the all-important 6-speed manual gearbox. This 996 has recently had its brake lines completely replaced and Iain has kept on top of the car in terms of maintenance.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Colin after meeting Iain the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Iain bought the Turbo in November 2019, he told us he had planned to use the car on various trips before Covid put a halt to it.

Iain has enjoyed his time with the Turbo, he told us he loves the rawness of the car, its a nice to have more feeling of the road. Due to working from home Iain doesn't use the car as often as he would like and has decided to move to electric, as a daily driver, so it was time to part with the Turbo.

Iain will be happy to answer any questions in the comments below.

Exterior

With a wider body than a standard Carrera, the 996 Turbo looks extra mean with those nostrils on the rear quarters too.

Wheels and Tyres

The standard 996 Turbo wheels were present and looked in good condition - being picky, we did notice a couple of small kerb markings on a few of the wheels, we also noticed a little bit of paint bubbling on the rear driver side wheel; you can see this in the photos below.

The tyres were a full marching set of Pirelli P-Zero Rosso, they all looked in great condition with plenty of life left in them too.

Please have a look at the photos and video below to asses the condition of the wheels and tyres for yourself.

Bodywork

The bodywork of the Turbo is in good condition, the panel gaps all looked even and tight. We did notice a couple of slight dings; one in the drivers door. We didn't notice any signs of corrosion on any of the panels.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The lovely blue paint was in good condition for what is now a 22 year old car.

We did notice some light swirl marks across the car - a machine polish should sort those out though. There are some slightly deeper scratches on the passenger side of the rear bumper - a localised repair will sort that out too. There was also a mark on the front of the bonnet which looked like it had been painted in the past.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass around the car looked in great condition - we didn't notice any stone chips in the windscreen, however we did notice a few very small scratches on the glass of the passenger side door.

Trim looked in good condition too, everything seemed to be where you'd expect it to be.

Please view the photos and video below to review the condition of the glass and trim for yourself.

Interior

The grey leather compliments the blue paint beautifully - a driver centric cabin with a manual gearbox.

Seats and Carpets

The leather on the seats looked in really decent condition - you can see some signs of wear but overall they are very good for their age. The rear of the passenger seat had quite a lot of scratches on it, as you can see from the photos below.

The carpets looked in good condition, we didn't notice any stains in the cars carpets, the only stains we did notice were on the removable carpet from the driver's footwell, a shampoo should easily sort that though.

Please take a look at the photos and video below to decide on the condition of the seats and carpets for yourself.

Dashboard

The familiar black dials of a Porsche greet you - the dashboard is also covered in grey leather and it looked in great condition.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The classic Porsche steering wheel, does its job without fuss, free from buttons. It looked in good condition, with only slight signs of wear.

The gearstick also looked in good condition, with only slight signs of wear too.

Please take a look at the photos and video below to check the condition of the steering wheel and gear stick for yourself.

Mechanics

Fitted with a ~414bhp twin-turbo flat-six mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox - this 996 Turbo is a proper driver's car.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine purred into life on first attempt and sounded great, we didn't observe any unusual noises from the engine. Whilst out on a short drive with Iain the gearbox seemed to be working well, the gears were going in with little effort and we didn't notice any unwanted noises.

Please take a look at the cold start video below to see for yourself the performance of the engine and gearbox.

Suspension and Brakes

Whilst on the drive with Iain we encountered some of Edinburgh's cobbled streets and the suspension dealt with then with ease, you could feel the cobbles with the firm ride but there were no unwanted noises from the suspension either - a great test!

The brakes felt good with plenty of bite - we didn't have any hard braking points during our short drive.

Please take a look at the on the road video below to see how the suspension and brakes performed.

The Drive

On the drive the car felt great, you could feel it has plenty of power - the engine and gearbox performed well, with no issues noticed.

The chassis felt good too, with the cobbles giving the suspension a good test and it passed without any strange noises noticed.

Overall a really well driving car.

To see the car in motion please take a look at the on the road video below.

Electrics and Other

This 996 Turbo comes from a more analogue age, therefore it doesn't have too many electrics to go wrong.

Iain assured us that all electrics are in working order, one thing he did mention was he's seen the warning light for the rear spoiler come on a couple of times, he has this checked by the Porsche center in October 2022 when the car was in with them and no action was required/taken.

History and Paperwork

Overall a very solid 996 Turbo with all the invoices to back up everything that has been done.

This 996 Turbo has a great amount of history with it, recently it has had all its brake lines replaced and has had a lot of suspension work done by Iain too.

The car has been serviced by Porsche with 15 stamps in the book.

The private registration number '3203 KO' shown in the photos is not included in the sale - Iain has transferred the number off the car and it's now registered with W271 XJE.

Hello Iain,
The appraisal states that you’ve stayed on top of maintenance. Can you please give comment on how you’ve managed the condition of the IMS/ baring given the well known risk/ issue this has on 996 model?Thank you
