Introduction

Kulraj Salh
COO

420HP, 4-wheel-drive, plenty of rubber, rear-engined… there is a lot to like about the 996 Turbo

The 911 (Type 996) Turbo is probably one of the best value for money supercars out there right now. It's certainly the reason why Surjit acquired this particular one.

This example has been well looked after over the years, lots of bills from Porsche main dealers and specialists. The new owner of this car will be making a very speedy getaway indeed.

Finished in Arctic Silver, this Turbo with a manual gearbox and in coupe format is arguably some of the best "bang for your buck" when it comes to cars. This car has been well used but also has had money spent on it where and when needed to ensure it still packs that visceral turbo punch that Porsche consistently delivers.

Meet the owner

Surjit loves cars and is always in the market for another driving experience.

He is also a friend and loyal client of ours at Trade Classics - a proper petrolhead - talking, researching and driving cars all the time.

Although he's owned lots of different cars over the years, this is his first and only Porsche. Straight in at the top end with the Turbo, he's owned this one for some 4 years.

Surjit is going through somewhat of a change with his cars, opting for the more relaxed GT cars over these out and out sports cars, and with that this car will be coming to auction with us. This one has had a fresh service with Zuffenhaus for the sale.

Exterior

Finished in Arctic Silver, the car has the tell tale Turbo looks; classic 911 shape, aggressive front and rear aero.

Wheels and Tyres

Sitting on the 18" 5-spoke Turbo wheels, and wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport tyres, the stance on this 911 is just right. The wheels are in excellent condition, take a look at the photos of each to see.

The "Turbo" centre caps always top this car off, you know you'll be driving something special.

Bodywork

Straight and true, the bodywork on this Turbo looks in great condition. No rust observed, and all the shut-lines and panel gaps look great across the car. Watch the video and look at the images from all angles to see the detail for yourself.

The 996 bodywork was revised on the Turbo derivative to allow airflow to 3 radiators upfront and to accommodate 18-inch wheels and tyres.

Paint

The silver paint colour suits this model particularly well, it helps to accentuate the wider body of the Turbo.

Finish is even across the car, although there are a few small stone chips and scrapes etc These are minimal considering the car has endured over 150,000 miles, watch the video review to see the detail.

Glass and Trim

Everything looks great around the windows. The front lights have the typical fogging, a common problem on 996’s, something the new owner may wish to rectify. A new windscreen has been fitted after a nasty stone-chip to the screen.

Interior

Lots of leather, although this is a drivers sports car, Porsche ensured that the cabin had comfort too.

Seats and Carpets

High backed, with supportive bolsters for cornering, lovely seats in this cabin. Both the front seats have some cracking and a few scuffs which you would expect from a car with high mileage, but other than that they are really good.

Take a look at the 'Interior Review' video to see all the details.

Dashboard

Finished with white gauges and orange dials, the instrument panel is really crisp and makes you feel like you are in control of one of the greatest 911’s ever to be made.

The rest of the dash looks excellent too, showing no rising in areas that tend to be in contact with direct sunlight. The centre console has signs of wear, and a bit un-tidy to the eye, but this is a car that's been used and can be daily driven by the new owner.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Both look in great condition.

The 6-speed manual transmission is by far one of the more sought-after versions of the 996 Turbo.

Mechanics

We took the car for a quick drive around our local area and we were very impressed.

Engine and Gearbox

An incredible 3.6L twin-turbocharged flat-6 engine is the first water-cooled 911. Unlike other 996's, the Turbo engine is a derivative of the GT1 race car, and produces 414hp, around 150hp more than the 993's 3.4L engine.

The 6-speed manual gearbox works beautifully in tandem with the engine, as can be seen from the 'On the Road' video.

A new clutch slave cylinder was added in 2006 whilst gear link rods were adjusted 2007. As late as October 2017, heat shields, locking nuts and spark plugs were replaced.

Suspension and Brakes

This wasn’t just the first water-cooled 911, it was the first 911 since the model’s inception to roll on a completely brand new chassis and suspension. That means a larger - but sleeker - body, and also much better handling. We heard no knocks or rattles on our drive out and everything sounds solid.

The ventilated disc brakes have been serviced whenever needed, proving to be reliable on our drive out. Front disc brakes and pads were replaced in 2012, and the front and rear pads were replaced again in 2014 when a major service took place (as can be seen in the history file).

The Drive

The drive is distinctively 911, and then the Turbo adds to the excitement. With the 150,000 miles driven in the car, the drive really does belie the mileage. With so many miles completed, and the car performing to standard, at the guide we are looking for for this car it feels like a steal.

Electrics and Other

On our drive out we didn't detect any problems with the electrics or any other features. Air conditioning was working well on a hot day, often a problem with 911's.

This Turbo has the typical rear air dam issue, and so Surjit has disconnected the system to ensure the spoiler stays straight.

History and Paperwork

Lots of invoices from main dealer and specialists to back up the mileage.

The 996 Turbo has been serviced at a number of OPC’s and specialists, over the majority of its life. Through ~150,000 miles, this example makes for an interesting proposition; supercar performance but for a daily driver price.

Looking at the paperwork, you see the high level of diligence and care the car has had over the years. You would expect nothing less from 911 enthusiasts. The car has just had the front windscreen replaced and a service with Zuffenhaus during the sale, ready for the new owner.

Hey Stephen – I’m on duty for this auction tonight. Everything we know has been written up in the listing and in the videos. I personally drove the car and it went very well as you can watch in the On-the Road video. Cheers Adam

Felt normal to me. I’ve driven a few and have 3 911s. Nothing unusual and was a great car to drive. Certainly doesn’t feel like a 150k mile car. But that’s just my view of course. You’ll have to make your own mind up 🙂

Yeah I also have a 911, but can’t drive this turbo so am interested in your opinion, many thanks

No worries – yeah I think it felt really good. Like I say, super surprised and it drove great. It’s no money for a 996 Turbo to use and improve.
