Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

The 996 arrived on the scene back in 1997, debuting at the Frankfurt motor show and representing a significant change from the 993.

Possibly the most controversial looking 911 in the range, those fried egg shaped headlights replacing the oval lights the 911 has always had since its birth in 1963. Looks aside the 996 is well rounded every day sports car like all 911s. It was the first 911 to use a water-cooled engine, a big departure from the air-cooled engine which the 911 always used previously. This specific car is fitted with a 3.4L flat-six and a manual gearbox, a perfect combination for a b-road blast at the weekend. Finished in the beautiful Lapis Blue paint it really is a head turner on the road.

This particular car comes to market from ~3 years ownership, covering some ~4,000 miles in that time. Importantly for this generation of 911 engine, it had an engine rebuild and preventative IMS change in 2018 with HP Porsche, coming in at a cost of nearly £9,000. It presents in good condition with a tidy interior, blue over blue, perfect for the summer sun.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Chris the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

It was an easy decision knowing the engine rebuild and IMS bearing replacement had been recently actioned on this car.

Chris purchased this car in the summer of 2019, the "Lapis Blue" paint and 997 Turbo wheels on top of the maintenance attracting him to this specific example. He's used this car very much as a fair weather driver, the car coming with its factory hard top which he's never used.

On top of the wheels, the car has Milltek silencers which further enhance the experience, and he mentions how he loves the torque the engine provides and how easy it is to live with the 6 speed manual. With a house move on the cards, he'll be loosing his garage, and he believes that this car very much deserves to live in one rather than on the road, and so it comes to market with us. Chris will be happy to answer any questions on the car in the comments section.

Exterior

The 911 is a timeless shape, instantly recognisable, even to non car people, this 996 stands apart with the 997 Turbo wheels.

Wheels and Tyres

This 996 comes with 19" alloy wheels from the later 997 Turbo, they looked to be in okay condition. We did notice some kerb marks on some of the wheels, the centre caps were looking a bit tired too. We found a matching set of Pirelli P-Zero on the rear and P-Zero Corsa on the front, they all seemed to have a decent amount of tread on them.

Please have a look at the photos and video below to asses the condition of the wheels and tyres for yourself.

Bodywork

All panels looked to line up well and panel gaps seemed snug as you would expect. There didn't seem to be any door dings or accident damage on the car. The car comes with the factory hard top which hasn't been used in current ownership, stored in the garage with the car.

We’ve highlighted in more detail our observations through our high resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourself.

Paint

Finished in a beautiful "Lapis Blue" paint, it is looking tired now. It could do with a proper mop and polish to remove the swirl marks on all panels, there are also a few deeper scratches on the bonnet which you can see in the photos and video. A professional detailer would most likely be able improve the paintwork. Some stone chips could be seen on the front bumper and mirror casings.

Again, please take a look at the photos and video below to decide on the condition of the paintwork for yourself.

Glass and Trim

The windscreen and windows seemed to be in good condition. We didn't notice any cracks or discolouration in any of the glass. On the fabric roof we noticed a couple of stains, it also looked like the colour had faded a little which often is the case. The fabric itself was in good condition with no rips or tears noticed.

On the trim of the roof opening we noticed a little part of the lacquer seemed to be peeling. Please view the photos and video below to review the condition of the glass and trim for yourself.

Interior

Inside you find figure hugging sport seats and that iconic rev counter staring back at you front and centre.

Seats and Carpets

The seats feature the Porsche emblem embossed into the leather of the headrests. The seats are in good condition, the bolsters of the front seats show some wear, the drivers seat more so than the passenger seat, with some few creases noticed in the leather. This is to be expected with the age of the car.

The rear seats show a small amount of wear too. Please take a look at the photos and video below to decide on the condition of the seats and carpets for yourself.

Dashboard

All information the driver ever needs is displayed in the dials with the biggest dial being the most important; the rev counter. Letting the driver know when to change gear is more important than the speed in motorsport terms, which is deeply embedded in the philosophy of Porsche.

The dashboard looked to be in good condition, we didn't notice any scratches or stains on the dials. A Sony head unit handles the sounds system in the car.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original Porsche steering wheel looked to be in good condition, we didn't notice any tears on the leather, general wear would seem to add up with the age and mileage of the car.

The gear stick also seemed to be good condition too, showing only slight wear consistent with the age of the car was observed. Please take a look at the photos and video below to check the condition of the steering wheel and gear stick for yourself.

Mechanics

A 3.4L flat six lives in the rear of the car, it is mated to a manual gearbox which translates to the tried and tested 911 experience.

Engine and Gearbox

The flat six is a very responsive engine and gives off a distinctive noise, this particular engine has been rebuild in 2018 with the IMS bearing replaced, a typical question for buyers looking at most 996s. Watch the video to see and hear the car start from cold.

Please take a look at the on the road video below to see for yourself the performance of the engine and gearbox, the manual box felt smooth, with each gear going in at first attempt with ease. Chris mentions also that the clutch was replaced at ~50,000 before he purchased the car.

Suspension and Brakes

The 911 is a sports car and as you would expect the suspension was firm but also compliant on the road, we didn't observe any unusual noises from the suspension whilst out on the road with Chris. The brakes seemed to be sharp, understandably when you look at the big drilled discs.

Please take a look at the on the road video below to see how the suspension and brakes performed.

The Drive

As mentioned above during the drive with Chris, the car felt responsive and refined. He mentions that it has so much torque It would happily sit at 30MPH in 6th gear. To see the 911 in motion please take a look at the on the road video below.

Electrics and Other

We witnessed the roof mechanism working well, both up and down. The radio and dials seemed to be working as expected, an aftermarket upgrade to Sony has been installed in this car. We were assured by Chris that the other electric were working as intended too.

History and Paperwork

This 996 had an engine rebuild in 2018, resolving the typical worries of IMS bearing that many buyers will be worried about, with the mileage at ~68,000, this manual Carrera comes to market just in time for summer.

The car comes to market from ~3 year ownership. A stamped service book shows the history in the cars early life and the majority of the miles. Importantly, there's the invoice from HP Porsche for the engine rebuild which took place in June 2018. Please see the photos below to view the history.

Please note, the private registration will not be included on the sale, and the car will be returned to its age related plate of HX51BOF. The car is sold with its factory hard top.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

Hi Chris, sorry another question. Why was the engine rebuilt at 50k, and was this when the the IMS bearing and clutch was changed?
Regards,
Jon

Hi Chris, your car looks lovely, but can I ask why the car has done less than 2000 miles in the last 2 years and between 20-21 only 500 miles?
I am looking forward to bidding, many thanks.
Jon
