Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

The 996 will soak up everything thrown at it, it is the very definition of a modern classic.

The 996 generation of Porsche 911s has finally come into its own, ignore the historical gripes and opinions, as time passes the first of the water-cooled 911s, particularly in wide-body form are emerging as the perfect rear-engine Porsches to introduce you to the legend. The flat-6 engine experience, along with the understated but distinctive styling and all-weather practicality, thanks to its all-wheel drive and forgiving road manners places the 996 high up as a genuine driver's car. First seen in 1998, the facelift models arrived in 2002 which also offered a useful increase in engine capacity, taking up the horses to ~316BHP.

In case those stories about worn engine seals and shafts still cast doubt, then perhaps this example could be just the thing. This 2002 "Diamond Black" 911 Carrera 4 cabriolet, also coming with factory hard top, not only an extensive service record, but the current owner has spent over £23,000 in the last ~5 years. It has seen just ~27,000 miles on a professionally rebuilt engine (with safeguarded parts upgraded) and gearbox, along with new suspension and front brakes. Offered with an MOT to October 2023, it has two keys and comes with its owner's wallet.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Mark the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

"A perfectly practical car, its character is summed up by its ability to deal with almost every type of road."

Mark bought the car in 2018, after the need to buy a second car. The Porsche fulfilled his requirements as both a reliable daily driver, as well as a weekend car with just enough space to accommodate his young family. Captivated by the positive service history and the hard top provision allowing for use all year round if needed, he has spent a considerable amount of money on its mechanical needs but could justify the costs for his peace of mind.

As his kids grow up, the reasonable practicality of the 996 is stretched to its limits and the arrival of the new daily driver has seen the Porsches use substantially reduced and this is the key reason for its sale. Mark will be happy any answers on the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Well presented with some distinctively finished wheels, the classic 911 silhouette is still unmistakable.

Wheels and Tyres

The optional 18" 5 spoke alloy Sport Design wheels have been professionally repainted in gun-metal. They are generally in good condition with light minor scuffs noted on the front rims. Fitted with Pirelli P-Zero's, all but the rear-offside tyre date from 2020 and look to have good tread. Take a look through the pictures to see the detail.

Bodywork

The structure of the car appears to be sound, with a solid floorpan and no issues noted on the inner wings. The external aspect of the car also looks good, with just some minor corrosion noted on the lowest section of the front wing arch lips which can come with age on these cars.

The car is generally free of damage, other than treatable dents on the near side section of the lower rear wing and bonnet. The panel fit is flush, with even door shut lines. The doors open and close with ease. We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The "Diamond Black" paint finish has an even coverage, with a good lustre with both bumpers being well mounted and showing minor marks and scuffs. The front bumper has small stone chips on the nose, with a few minor marks also noted on the bonnet. There is also a minor scuff on the passenger door.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass is in good shape, with marks commensurate with the age and mileage of the car, the air pressure window drop on the driver's side is functional but occasionally gets caught out. The headlamps are good with very little in terms of ageing, the rest of the lenses are intact.

The exterior trim is decent, with the window valance plastics showing age-related fade. The car comes with the factory hardtop, and there is a small cluster of corrosion forming on the offside of the front edge, with minor wear and marks noted elsewhere.

Interior

An updated media centre, but that tried and tested 5 dial layout that we're all familiar with when it comes to the 911.

Seats and Carpets

The heated leather seats are generally in OK condition with no rips, the driver's seat has typical age-related creases, with some bolster wear and minor dentitions noted on the other seats.

The carpets are intact, all bone dry, and show the typical fading to come that you now see with a 996. The luggage space furnishing is also intact, with no water ingress.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in good shape, with some minor marks. The glove box handle needs investigation. The centre console plastics show scuffs and marks as pictures, the controls are generally in good shape, with some showing signs of age. The binnacle is intact with legible instrument faces.

All controls are said to work, with the air conditioning being weak. The optional handbrake lever with aluminium inlay has a few marks. The car has its original PCM replaced with a Kenwood touchscreen CarPlay and Bluetooth DAB. The door cards show minor marks.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel with Tiptronic buttons is in good shape with no outstanding issues noted. The aluminium trimmed Tiptronic selector shows minor wear and is missing its Porsche emblem.

Mechanics

The 996 has poised road manners, it rides extremely well with excellent grip, not surprising given the expenditure in the current ownership.

Engine and Gearbox

The cold start process did not pose any issues, the car starts up immediately with no engine warning lights. The engine idles smoothly with no undulations. The engine presentation is clean with no signs of any fluid seepage. This is just what you'd expect given it has been through a Hartech rebuild in the current ownership some ~27,000 miles ago.

The gearbox operates without issues too, again what you'd expect with the gearbox having been rebuilt in current ownership. The car has also seen a recently fitted Dansk stainless steel sports exhaust system, which performs without issues.

Suspension and Brakes

The brakes stop the car in a straight line, with no issues noted with unwanted noises. It received new front discs and pads ~2 years ago.

The suspension didn’t emit any form of knocks or rattles, thanks to the complete set of new uprated Bilstein shocks, coffin arms, suspension arms, and track control arms ~18 months ago at the cost of ~£3,000.

The Drive

The experience is pure 911, comfortable and quiet enough to not be intrusive but burbles along nicely when you apply a little pressure. Thanks to a complete engine rebuild, as well as suspension attention, the car drives exceptionally well and felt tight on the move. Due to this extensive work and Mark's regular use of the car, it is mechanically well up to scratch and the gentle drive around on the roads of Richmond Park really didn’t expose any problems with the car.

Mark has not reported any issues with oil pressure or oil temperature, and the added safeguard of a low-temperature thermostat fitted after the engine rebuild should allay any fears. The car corners neatly, with no unwanted strains or knocking heard.

Mark did tell us there is an intermittent vibration which usually occurs under high torque at around 30mph, he has had it checked out at GT One, they couldn't identify what causes it but weren't too concerned about it.

Electrics and Other

The car comes with its factory hardtop, it can be removed and replaced easily and also comes with its stand. The soft top operates perfectly with no issues noted with the motors. It is presentable with just a handful of marks but no rips. The soft top headlining is in good shape, with a little loose fabric noted on the inside of both C pillars.

Mark told us there is a couple of electrical issues these are; beeps from the parking sensors when reversing, which seems to be an issue with a sensor. The oil temperature warning light occasionally comes on during a drive and goes back off again, this has started happening since the engine rebuild.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~5 year ownership, there are bills for £23,000 on its engine, suspension and gearbox, on top of its regular servicing in that time, a mechanically strong example.

Originally registered by Porsche Cambridge, the car has a regular pattern of servicing, carried out by Porsche's main dealers and specialists, with three services in the last three years.

Hartech carried out a complete engine rebuild at around 87,000 miles in November 2018 at the cost of £11,580. Naturally, this included the installation of a larger improved bearing and low-temperature thermostat. Since then it has also seen an additional £9,500 worth of work including a whole new exhaust kit, new front brakes and lines, hydraulic tappets as well as a gearbox rebuild. It has also seen new suspension components, which include £3,000 worth of upgraded Bilstein Sports shocks and new coffin arms, suspension arms and track control arms.

It also comes with the usual sundry/maintenance bills and a handful of previous MOTs and its full owner wallet and manuals. It has an MOT to October 2024 and will be sold with both of its keys.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. Hi Mark
I just looked through the MOT history and I noticed that the car lost 15000 miles between Oct 2008 and September 2009. I t looks like that was well before you owned it. Does the car come with any documentation to cover this millage discrepancy?

Thanks

Tony
