Introduction

Professional Consigner

Quality engineering, iconic styling and fantastic performance – when it comes to automotive greatness, the 911 is often unrivalled.

The launch of the 996 generation in 1997 marked one of the most significant transformations in 911 history, replacing the 993 and introducing water-cooling to the rear-mounted, flat-six engine. It also featured a more curvaceous, spacious, and aerodynamic design, bringing the 911 into the modern era. In 2001, the 996 received further refinements, including redesigned headlamps, upgraded steering and suspension, and interior enhancements. Beyond its updated design, the 996 was engineered for both performance and practicality, offering a comfortable and reliable driving experience that made it a compelling choice for daily use.

Coming to market from ~2.5 years ownership, this example has been kept largely factory standard by the current owner who wanted to preserve its heritage and identity as best he could. Brake lines have been checked and replaced recently including additions of upgraded braided performance parts. New stainless steel rear silencers have also been added which gives a great sound to the driving experience. The 996 C4S is factory specced in "Polar Silver" over "Metropole Blue", full leather, heated front seats and features a Bose sound system with an upgraded Alpine stereo and includes 2 sets of keys. The car has a Cat D insurance write-off market from November 2003, and comes with two sets of keys, its original owners booklets and a current MOT valid until 08.08.2025.

This listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Darren the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've loved every minute of ownership, it ticks all the boxes for me and is one of my favourite cars of all time.

It's safe to say that Darren, the current owner, is a fan of fast cars, especially Porsche "I've always had a passion for the brand having owned a few different models over the years. The 4S was a bucket list car for me, I missed an opportunity to buy one around 15 years ago and kept regretting that I didn’t at the time. I heard about this car through a friend and as soon as I viewed it I couldn’t walk away. I certainly haven’t regretted my decision!".

As a lover of all things Porsche, Darren has meticulously gone over the car and tells us more about his love for this model, "I wanted to keep the car as intended from factory as much as I could. The best thing I love about the 4S is the wide body and the overall styling just ticked so many boxes for me. The Polar Silver option on this car makes it stand out so well, I think it’s the perfect colour".

Darren lets us know more about his reasons for parting with the car, "I’m looking to pass ownership over quite reluctantly but, being a bit of a car collector myself, means there’s always something coming round the corner and I can’t keep them all. I will miss this one and I’m sure it'll bring huge pleasure to its new owner". Darren will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

A real head turner in a lovely coat of Polar Silver, this 996 is beautifully presented, a smart example of the 911 Carrera 4S.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with 18” Carrera 5-spoke alloy wheels, these show in great condition, and reflect the condition of the rest of the car. The Porsche emblems present really well across all four corners of the car. There was a minor blemish to the finish of the rear drivers side wheel edge.

The wheels are wrapped with Falken Azenis FK510 tyres with a spec of 225/40 to the fronts and date codes from 2019. To the rear, these are fitted with Falken Azenis FK453's and show a spec of 295/30 and have date codes from 2019. All tyres show in good visual condition. For a more detailed view of the 996's exterior and a closer inspection of the wheels and tyres, please refer to the photos and videos.

Bodywork

The car stands level, shut lines look good and we could see no visible distortion to the panels. Both doors, boot, and bonnet open and close well, exactly as you would expect from Porsche build quality. We found no dings or major areas of concern when looking over the car, although we did note a very small area on the drivers side rear wing where there appeared to be a little area of corrosion.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The "Polar Silver" paint finish shows a good lustre and even colour match throughout. There are a handful of very minor stone chips, mostly on the front of the car and the front splitter, but overall, nothing overly concerning. We did note a slight scratch on the drivers side front wing and a small scuff to the passenger side wing mirror when looking closely over the car.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

Overall the glass and trim on the Porsche showed with no major cause for concern. Windscreen, side windows, rear window and the headlights all show really well, with no significant scratching, marks or chips. The windscreen features a green graduated tint, as per the option code, 567.

The seals look good around the outside and in line with the rest of the condition of the car. This being a "4S", the car has the rear reflector on the back, a nod to the heritage of earlier models.

We've taken you around the car in greater detail in our exterior review video, please take the time to look over the video and see how the glass and trim look from different perspectives.

Interior

A driver-focused layout, smart 5-dial cockpit display and a sleek Metropole Blue interior - the 996 offers an immersive experience for the driver.

Seats and Carpets

Both front seats are heated and finished in "Metropole Blue" full leather with the Porsche crest in the headrests. Overall, these show in great condition - there were signs of creasing to the leather on the seats and a few marks mainly on the side bolster sections of the seats, but nothing out of the ordinary given its age. The rear section shows very little signs of use although does show a slight crease to the drivers side headrest.

Carpet sections showed in great condition on the interior. Equally in the front boot, this area showed no concerns.

We've captured high-resolution photos and a full interior video tour through the car. This covers off the angles inside the car for you to review and appreciate the condition of what's on offer here in our interior review section.

Dashboard

The leather covered dashboard looks to be free from any splits and cracks and showed well on our visit, this area looks good in the interior with only minor marks here. The white backed clocks and dials showed nicely with ~65,761 miles at the time of our visit. The display on these sections displayed a lovely level of presentation and are all functional showing clearly with no obvious scratching to the facings.

Our interior gallery section takes you over some closer images of the Porsche dashboard, head over and see the car's interior in finer detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A classic Porsche 3-spoke steering wheel finished in matching black leather with aluminium accents, sits at the hands of the driver, this is in great condition and has maintained its looks as well as the rest of the interior. Featured on the steering wheel is the Tiptronic gear selector for more responsive driver performance.

The automatic gear selector also shows the same levels of quality, both sections are straight forward in design and present smartly with only minor levels of wear noted.

Mechanics

Fitted with a naturally aspirated flat-six paired with an automatic gearbox - the 996 was the first 911 to feature a water-cooled engine producing ~315BHP and a 0-60 in ~5.6 seconds.

Engine and Gearbox

Starting up from cold, we noted no concerns. The car idled smoothly and engine bay showed well, with its 3.6L engine easily capable of taking the driver up to speed in no time at all.

We took the car out around some local roads with the current owner to get a better feel for what this vehicle is all about. On the drive, we ran through the motions and got an overview from Darren's perspective on how the car performs.

Take a look over the video for yourselves to hear the 996 start up from cold and take in the lovely sounds of the engine and exhaust system.

Suspension and Brakes

We noted no knocks, bangs or issues from the suspension when we were on the road in the car, and gave us no concerns in its performance or handling.

The brakes felt to have no pull or vibrations that stood out to us when on the journey and brought the car to a stop without a problem and with the kind of stopping power you'd expect. Overall the car performed as to be expected with no observed issues. Please take a look over the mechanical videos and photographs to see close-up images from under the car.

The Drive

A defining characteristic of the 996 is its driving experience, effortlessly transitioning into a focused performance machine with a quick blip of the throttle.

Darren, the current owner, tells us more about his experience with the car, "The Porsche is like nothing I’ve driven before, it feels so solid on the road and it’s a real point and go experience due to the four wheel drive setup. Plenty of power when you need it and incredible on the road performance".

Electrics and Other

During our time with the car we noticed no electrical faults. All dashboard lights turned off when out on the road as expected, and all dials and gauges were functioning without issue.

The 996 is fitted with a Bose sound system from its factory spec along with an Alpine head unit, which was upgraded by a previous owner. Additional features include rear parking assist, climate control and Litronic self-levelling headlights.

Darren let us know that he's had no issues with the electrical elements on the car, and that everything should be working correctly to the best of his knowledge.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~2.5 years ownership, the car has lots of history from the last 6 years or so, and is in a desirable Polar Silver over Metropole Blue specification.

Darren has serviced the car himself and has had friends in the trade carry out essential work on the car, most recently all brake lines were checked and replaced where necessary as well as having braided performance parts added. Darren has also recently added new stainless steel rear silencers - providing a great sound to the Porsche driving experience after opening up the engine. The history file documents additional recent works carried out prior to current ownership, showing the level of care bestowed on this 996. An important note, documented in the paperwork gallery, is that the car was involved in an accident in 2003. The car was only around a year old which lead to the car being registered as a Cat D. Darren tells us more about his initial purchase, "When I looked to buy the car I wasn't too concerned about the past history. It was over ~20 years ago (21.11.2003) and I didn't see any signs of concern at all. I have thoroughly stripped and looked over the car and can only find that it had some front end damage back in its early life".

Works completed in previous ownership include; updated front disc pads and brakes which were changed in August 2020, a new nearside ABS sensor in February 2020, front and rear tracking, replacement prop shaft drive coupling, new oil filter and new crankshaft seal and sensor in February 2019, and new power steering pipe, six replacement ignition coils plus a steam clean of the engine and gearbox carried out in July 2016.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check. The car has a Category D insurance marker from November 2003 as detailed in the paperwork.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price that the seller will let the car go for. We work with sellers to set realistic reserves in line with market pricing – we don’t take on vehicles with unrealistic pricing. Reserve met / not met labeling may or may not be announced during the auction – this is just like a traditional auction house, i.e. bidders may only know when they’ve been successful at the end of the auction.

If the reserve hasn’t been met at the end of the auction then we work with the highest bidder to try to work out a deal with the seller.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
