Introduction
Darren Rungasamy
The 996 Targa offers the best of open air motoring with structural rigidity.
There were fears that the new 1997 water-cooled 996 had damaged the 911's character and deployment of performance. All were proven to be completely unfounded. By overhauling the outmoded methodology, Porsche had brought the 911 into the modern era and opened the market to a new appreciative audience. In 2002 the 996 underwent a significant upgrade, which saw an electronic throttle, and a more rigid body with external cosmetic improvements on top of the increase of the engine capacity to 3.6 litres. In the same year the Targa was released, recognised as the rarest body style in the series – only ~5,152 were produced. The novel sliding panoramic glass roof and rear glass hatch which gave access to the storage compartment, made it the most user-friendly 911. It offered the strength and classic outline of the coupe, with the freedom of the cabriolet.
This 2003 manual 996 is finished in "Midnight Blue" with a black leather interior. Sold with a detailed maintenance and service history since new, there is also evidence of over £16,000 spent since 2016, and it has only covered ~59,790 miles. Last serviced only ~250 miles ago, it comes with 2 keys, its full owners wallet with booklets and a year's MOT, the 996 is also ULEZ exempt.

Hi. It looks like there is a leak near RMS area since 2018 having had the RMS & IMS replaced just the year prior. How bad is the leak? Did GT one speculate why it was leaking following their repair? Thanks.
Hi, my apologies for the delayed response. This has been mentioned by GTone but always as a low priority with no advice given to me that this needed any urgent attending to. I’ve never actually noticed any leak, certainly no traces whenever parked, nor do I need to regularly top up the oil level. I’ll call GTone tomorrow and will get back to you if there’s any additional info I can provide including what course of action they would suggest and approximative costings if they can provide. Best, Andy
Hi again, had a chat with GT One to talk through this in more detail. In a nutshell this is a minor issue, one which is extremely common with this model (and indeed various 911 models). I’m told 90% will have some minor “sweat” near RMS area. It was flagged as an observational comment for completeness, but even now they would advise against replacing the rear main oil seal as there is simply no need, nor any guarantee that it would remove this minor leak altogether. It’s the sort of job that would be worth considering whenever the clutch may need replacing. Given that it was replaced in 2017 this shouldn’t be any time soon. GT one know the car well and have offered to provide further information on the car (as well as vouch for it maintenance upkeep) if needed.
I hope this helps!
Thank you!
Can you advise if there is an issue with the panoramic roof/targa motor? From the vid, it seems to be very jerky, when it should open smoothly and on one push of the button.
Hi! The roof motor works but yes for some reason I need to keep pressing the button repeatedly for it to fully open and close. I took it to GT one after I had an issue with the roof (about 3 years ago) and they fixed it like this and said they would have to do a more thorough review to get to back to full normal operation (as you say it should be a smooth opening at the press of the button). As it was working (albeit with the jerky operation) I didn’t pursue further at the time. Open and honest I don’t know exactly what’s causing it nor what it would cost to get it working back to its original state. A £150 or so diagnostic likely needed to identify root cause – likely a sensor issue.
