Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

This isn't any 996 Turbo, this is the X50 996 Turbo - a monster of a car with 444 bhp under your right foot - wowzers!

For those of you in the know, and let's face it you are if you are reading this far, the 996 Turbo X50 is probably one of the best value for money supercars out there right now - you get one hell of a lot of top Porsche engineering, quality and performance. The all important options on the X50 were larger turbochargers and intercoolers along with revised engine control software which increased the power output to a mighty 444 bhp.

This is a specialist car in every sense of the word and very sought after too - especially lower mileage / exception cars, like we have here. If you've done your research, and we're sure you have, then you will already know about much higher priced and similar cars advertised across the Internet with dealers. However, Martin is motivated to sell the car to fund a new project and as such has priced this car to sell.

This particular example has been well looked after over the years, with a full service history from both Porsche dealers and Porsche independent specialists.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Martin the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've worked with Porsche all my life and this is the car I always wanted, but now it's time to find a new owner.

Martin is a customer and friend of us here at Trade Classics and we've known him for over five years. Martin has worked with the Porsche marque all his life as he's a specialist mechanic - in his early career Martin worked for Porsche on their race engines and there's not much Martin doesn't know about any model of the brand.

This is Martin's own car that he bought about three years ago - during the early part of his ownership he used and enjoyed the car whilst also using his fastidious mechanical skills to keep the car in simply excellent condition. Just take a look at all the mechanical parts of the car - we don't think you'll find a better example.

Exterior

The 996 is maturing nicely into classic status with Seal Grey being the best colour to show off the subtle lines.

Wheels and Tyres

The car has original 18" five-spoke Turbo wheels that are wrapped in Continental Sport Contact 2 tyres with excellent tread - we love the purposeful stance of the 996.

The wheels are in excellent condition - please take a look at the photos to see for yourself.

Front- 225-40-18 Continental Sport Contact 2 - Dates: O/S: 09/16 and N/S: 04/18
Rear- 295-30-18 Continental Sport Contact 2. Dates: O/S: 38/13 and N/S: 39/13

Bodywork

As you would expect from a well-cared example, all the bodywork is in excellent condition and we didn't see any issues on our visits.

Importantly all panel gaps look correct to us and aligned with no signs of damage.

The 996 bodywork was revised on the Turbo derivative to allow airflow to three radiators upfront and to accommodate the 18" wheels and tyres.

Paint

The Seal Grey paint is in excellent condition in line with the car's mileage - it looks even and consistent in direct sunlight.

We are being very picky, but will just point out some very light blemishes that look like a small repair along the front bumper, perhaps due to stone chips correct - however, you need to get very close to notice anything.

Glass and Trim

All in excellent condition in line with the rest of the car - we saw no signs of damage or degradation.

The headlights are free from any signs of fogging and discolouration.

Interior

Finest leather and sports seats that hug you in the corners - the new owner will know there sitting in something very special.

Seats and Carpets

High backed with supportive bolsters - perfect for cornering on a spirited drive.

Both the front seats have some light wear that you would expect from the mileage of the car and go towards proving the originality and authenticity of this car.

The carpets look great with a deep pile that give the interior a quality feel whilst helping with sound deadening.

Please take a look at the 'Interior Review' video to see all the details.

Dashboard

Finished with white gauges and orange dials, the instrument panel is crisp and clearly legible.

All buttons are clean and functioning as expected.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Both in very good condition and look to be in line with the mileage and age of the car.

Mechanics

The X50 option adds to what is already an impressive piece of engineering.

Engine and Gearbox

An incredible 3.6L twin-turbocharged flat-6 engine is the first water-cooled 911. Unlike other 996's, the Turbo engine is a derivative of the GT1 race car, and produces 444hp, around 170hp more than the 993, due to the larger turbochargers etc. The clean engine bay is a testament to the full service history this 996 X50 possesses.

The 5-speed ZF 5HP19 automatic gearbox works beautifully in tandem with the engine and we are assured by the seller there are no issues in this department.

Please watch our 'Start Up' video above to see the car starting with no issues, it really does run great.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension is one of the only parts of the 993 that was retained for the 996. We are assured by the seller driving the car offers no abnormal sounds from these parts. The 996 X50 has rear multi-link suspension to accommodate the rear-wheel-drive setup.

Red brake callipers and super-clean discs look stunning with the rest of the body - sporty indeed.

The Drive

A very cleverly designed car that provides great confidence when behind the wheel no matter what the driving conditions.

If you enjoy driving and want something that will cover long distances with 2 peoples including luggage in comfort then a 996 won't disappoint. Despite all of the criticism around the styling of this era compared to others e.g. 997, I personally think the shape in particular at the rear is better than most.

Electrics and Other

We detected no issues with the electrics and this car is ready to be driven having been cared for meticulously throughout its life and we cannot wait to find another passionate owner for it.

History and Paperwork

Martin has been meticulous in maintaining this car - it's ready for the new owner to enjoy.

As you will see from the mileage count, Martin hasn't used the car much in recent years, however, it's been professionally stored, used occasionally and importantly serviced.

There is a good level of paperwork regarding MOTs as well as a fully stamped service book.

The car comes with two spare keys and an electric fob.

An RAC 'Porsche Approved' certificate is also available to add to the provenance.

Checks carried out by us:
- Photo ID of seller.
- V5 present.
- HPi checked and clear.

Hi Martin. I can’t see any MOTs between 2014 and 2018, what happened?

Hey Alan – Martin just called me as he’s out and about today and was notified about your comment. He asked me to say to you that the previous owner didn’t use the car between 2015 and 2017 and it was stored by him and on a SORN. But the servicing was still done to keep it up to date as that still needed doing. Cheers Adam

Hi Martin
The car looks fantastic. Just wondering why you’ve done less than 250 miles since it’s been in your ownership.

Hi James, Marin is out and about today and asked me to reply. He’s just not used it as much as wanted and has other daily cars too. It’s been professionally stored most of that time so always tricky to use. Whilst he always wanted an X50 to enjoy it’s was also bit of an investment car too so mileage is always a consideration. Hope that helps Adam

Hey… there are dealer cars at very high prices. We priced this car accordingly and Martin is motivated to sell. We’ll see where bidding goes tonight but someone could have a real bargain here. Arguably better than money in the bank right now.
