Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

The 996 is maturing nicely into its well deserved seat between two other greats - the earlier 993 and later 997. With it's distinctive good looks and awesome 911 driving experience, it really is a lot of drivers' car for not a lot of money.

Launched in 1997, the Porsche 996 Carrera was designed as a sports grand tourer, but it was also comfortable and reliable enough to be used as a daily driver.

The 996 presented a milestone for the German carmaker with a redesign developed by Pinky Lai (also responsible for the designs of both the 987 Boxster and Cayman), lines were smoothed, windscreen pushed back, it also offered a level of comfort that both upon its release and now makes it so appealing to many.

This example is the later facelift model with the redesigned front lights and larger 3.6 engine. It comes fresh from a proper 911 enthusiast, John, and due to an impending house move on the cards he needs to now find the car a new owner.

This is a drivers' example, i.e. it's a late model year, manual / 3.6 engine, in coupe form with no sun roof and has been very well looked after.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting John the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I admit it, I'm a 911 guy and this won't be my last 911, but right now a house move takes priority - I've got a feeling I may regret letting this one go.

John bought this car after selling his air-cooled SC (Martini livery) last year with us. John tells us that he missed a 911 so much in his life that he jumped at the opportunity to try out a 996 when this one came up for sale.

John says, "Of course the mileage is higher than the average, however, I really couldn't believe how good this car was and how well it had been maintained. So I had no concerns and it hasn't let me down".

As mentioned, a house move is now forcing John to part with this car.

Exterior

Coupe form in the right colour with no sunroof - all factory options ticked by a proper driver back in 2003.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with standard Carrera alloys is the perfect choice for the 'factory look'. John has recently had the wheels refurbished and you'll see an invoice in the paperwork to support this. One wheel had a slight crack and John had this repaired professionally before it was refurbished.

This car is fitted with a full set of Pirelli P-Zero tyres dated 2020. A small but important detail like this shows how well cared for this car has been, i.e. having factory recommended / branded tyres is a good sign. They are 225/40/18 on the front and 285/30/18 on the rear with a good amount of tread remaining.

Bodywork

Again, even though the mileage is higher than the average, it's clear this car has been looked after. The panel gaps and door shuts look good across the car with nothing major to point out.

We just noticed one dent on the front right-hand wing as you'll see in the images / videos.

We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The light made photographing the technical shots a bit challenging on the day, however, please make sure you watch the external video as you'll get a better view of the car's condition from the exposure of the video.

Paint

The paint is generally in good condition, i.e. it looks even and matching colour across the car. John has had the front and rear bumper sprayed due to stone chips and this has really improved the appearance. Of course, there are the usual and expected stone chips on the bonnet that you'll see in the images / videos.

We do think a good mop-and-polish will greatly improve the visual aspect of the paint. And being black it should really stand out when done.

Again, please take time to review all the images and videos showing the paint from different angles and reflections, to assess the condition for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks in great condition all around, the seals look tight and we couldn't see any perishing.

Please view the images and videos of the glass and trim to see in detail.

Interior

A new model calls for an uplifted interior - the 996 cabin is a step up in terms of luxury and being finished in tan against the contrast of the black body really is a timeless colourway.

Seats and Carpets

The tan leather seats are fitted within the cabin and both appear in good condition and look to be in line with the age and mileage. There is some slight wear to the drivers bolster and seat, as you might expect, but no major damage to note. The door cards and carpet also appear in great condition throughout.

Please take a look at the images and videos for a more detailed view.

Dashboard

A crisp and clean layout from years of racing experience.

The black dials look great against the colour scheme of the interior and all the white digits are clear and very legible. John reports all the dials, gauges and airconditioning are fully working to his knowledge.

Please take a look at the images and videos to see the dashboard up close.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Both are original items that look and feel in good condition with some light wear to both.

An easy fix would be to re-colour the leather on the gear stick to improve its appearance. However, remember this is a drivers' example at 911 entry level money, so maybe you'll want to keep that look going and just enjoy the driving experience.

Take a look at the detailed video and photographic tours on the interior.

Mechanics

This is where the action is - the 911 driving experience and our passenger lap during the consignment was faultless.

Engine and Gearbox

The 3.6L Porsche block is a masterpiece of an engine and when mated to the 6-speed manual gearbox it really comes alive.

John reports the engine runs very well with no issues to note.

Another 'Sunday job' would be to action a fresh detail on the engine bay.

As you can see from the cold start video, the Carrera fires up at the first turn of the key and sounds great, we took the car for a drive which shows the car swiftly working its way up and down the gearbox with fault.

Suspension and Brakes

The 996 took the already highly praised 993 front suspension, 6-speed transmission, and rear multi-link suspension and fitted it in a revised form. The car was 45% stiffer than its predecessor after it was formed from high-strength steel.

John reports no unusual knocks or noises coming from this 996, and also reports good handling along with prompt stopping power from the brakes. We can confirm this is the case due to the brief trip as a passenger around the local area.

The Drive

The sports car that sets the bar for all others, the 911 is a high-performance race car, legal for the UK roads.

The 911 gives a great amount of feedback, giving you all the confidence to tackle any corner you chuck it into, while not disappointing on the straights either.

Being a highly original gen-two car, we think it's a great usable classic - maybe it's a car to use as a daily driver, continue with the maintenance and your money should always be safe in it.

Electrics and Other

With climate control and satellite navigation, it's got all the right 'must-have' items. John confirms both work correctly, however, the age of the maps is unknown so we'd assume they may be quite old!

Currently, the Porsche only has one key and it needs reprogramming to work the remote locking.

Everything else works as it should do to John's knowledge.

History and Paperwork

A drivers' car with a great history file - important items such as clutch, tyres and water pump have all been replaced within the last 3 years for peace of mind motoring.

There is a really good level of paperwork and history with this example - MOT documentation as well as the service book and invoices - take a look at all the receipts in the media pack below.

Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.
