Introduction

Rarer than hen's teeth - we present the Porsche 911 40-Year Anniversary Edition.

Launched in 1997, the Porsche Carrera 996 was designed as a grand tourer, but it was also comfortable and reliable enough to be used as a daily driver. Upon its launch, the 996 received quite a lot of criticism from diehard Porsche fans worldwide. This was mainly due to the new design of the headlights and the smooth sides without the more prominent wheel arches like people were used to with a 911. Not to mention the move to a 3.4 litre, water-cooled engine replacing the previously used for many years air-cooled engine.

Just four years later, the new model 996 was released. The newly designed headlights, which were more similar to the turbo version car as opposed to the entry-level Boxster, kept the die-hard Porsche owners happy, and more importantly, a larger 3.6 litre engine, powering the new model from 0-62mph in just ~5 seconds.

But it’s this model, which is the very desirable 40-Year Anniversary Edition which is very special. Launched to celebrate 40 years of the Porsche 911, there were just 1,963 units produced, and approximately ~125 were only available for the UK market.

This rare example comes from a private collection having been owned for over ten years and done very few miles in that time - it now presents itself as a fantastic opportunity for any Porsche enthusiast to own such a sought-after modern classic.

This listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Paul the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Purchasing the 40th Anniversary ten years ago was the start of Paul’s obsession with rare Porsches.

Paul purchased this sought-after 2004 Porsche 911 (996) 40th Anniversary ten years ago, and it was the starting point of his collection of desirable Porsches.

The cars were stored in a glass-fronted garage at Paul’s previous house, which was perfect to see them, but this also meant they weren't really used, as you can tell from the MOT history for the past few years.

Paul and his wife have made a life decision to sell up everything and buy a motorhome and go travelling - so with the house now sold, the cars have since been in storage and next on the list to find new owners.

Exterior

The classic shape of the narrow body 996 was improved with the addition of turbo bumpers for the 40th anniversary.

Wheels and Tyres

The wheels are the original five-spoke alloys. There is some light corrosion to the spokes, but there doesn’t appear to be any damage. We think a simple refurbishment would see them as good as new.

The tyres are matching Pirelli P-Zero’s, which have a good amount of tread remaining.
Please see the image gallery to take a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

The 911’s lines all appear to be equal, with a nice gap around each panel, and there are no dings or dents to mention.

As usual, there is a small amount of damage to the lower spoiler on the underside, possibly caused by speed bumps or similar scraping against the plastic spoiler - this is only visible when you look low down.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Being the 40th Anniversary model, Porsche chose the lovely GT-Silver as the special paint to set off the 911.

Looking around the car, there is some lacquer peel to the front bumper and bonnet, which looks to have developed from stone chips. There are also some marks on the rear bumper just by the driver's rear light and the lower sections. But, generally, the car presents very well, with minimal marks other than the lacquer peel on the front end.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windows are all in good condition with no apparent scratches to be seen. The window seals also appear to be in good order.

The headlights are free from any chips or splits. They look to have recently been polished to remove some discolouration and now look nice and bright with a clear finish.

Interior

Porsche in-car phone, black leather, memory electric and heated seats - the 911 is a fully loaded and comfortable place to be.

Seats and Carpets

Finished in black leather, the seats in the 911 are fully electric, heated and have a memory function. There is a small amount of colour wear to the driver’s bolster, which looks to be innkeeping with the age of the Porsche. The door cards are in good condition with no obvious scuffs or damage.

The carpets are in good order too with no real signs of age. A set of Porsche logo mats are fitted, which are in good condition. Inside the boot are the spare wheel, tool kit and CD multi-changer.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The leather-covered dashboard is in excellent condition with no marks or damage to mention. The instruments are working correctly, with no warning lights displayed when the engine is running; the odometer shows a reading of ~77,710 miles.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original black leather steering wheel is in excellent condition, with just a small amount of age-related shining to the rim. Likewise, the gear knob is in excellent condition and hasn’t been scratched by any keepers wearing rings.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

The 40th Anniversary benefits from the X51 engine as standard, pushing out 340bhp.

Engine and Gearbox

The X51 engine fires up immediately with no signs of any smoke, as seen in our Mechanical Review video.

The six-speed manual gearbox is precise when selecting the gears, and the change is smooth.

The 911 pulls strongly through the gears, as you would expect.

Importantly there is also a limited-slip diff fitted to the 40-year models as standard.

Suspension and Brakes

Another upgrade over a standard 996 for the anniversary model was upgraded suspension, which sits slightly lower.

The dinner plate-sized discs look in good order, and Paul doesn’t report any issues with the car pulling to either side or juddering through the pedal when bringing the 911 to a halt.

No untoward knocks or bangs were heard from either corner of the car whilst on our test drive.

The Drive

A true performance sports car, which doesn’t disappoint. The 911 is a fantastic car to drive, but as mentioned, the 40 Year model gets some tasty upgrades, which make the whole package work just that bit better.

Please watch the 'On the Road' video to see the car starting from cold and going out on a short run.

Electrics and Other

The 911 comes with all the creature comforts you need; climate control, satellite navigation, Bose speaker system. Paul doesn’t report any issues with the electrics, and all the switchgear looks in good condition.

The cigarette lighter or blanking plate is missing, as you can see in the images.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

History and Paperwork

Number 1,255 out of 1,963 produced, and it is believed ~125 were for the UK market making this a rare 911 for sure.

Two keys and the owner's handbooks and service book are present.

No doubt the Porsche 911, in whichever form, has been a poster car for many at some point in their life. The 996 is one of the easiest ways to get into owning a 911, and what makes this car so special is it’s the 40th Anniversary Edition, which, let’s face it, is much rarer to see on the road than a desirable turbo model, making it an exceptionally good choice with potential investment.

Paul has set a keen reserve to reflect the small bit of paint required, mainly on the front bumper.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi
Last service stamp was in 2012? Could you give further detail as to why there is a 12 year gap please. Also has the car had any work carried out to it of note eg repairs, consumables like tyres brakes etc
Many thanks

Thanks for coming back, so it’s not had an oil change in 12 years? Please confirm. Also I’m guessing the tyres will need replacing due to age now.
Appreciate you haven’t done very many miles but with no work done in the last 12 years it would need full recommissioning as many items will perish over time.
