Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

Becoming more and more desirable as the values of other Porsche models rise, the 996 facelift is one that won’t be around for long at these prices.

Launched in 1997, the Porsche 911 Carrera was designed as a sports grand tourer, but it was also comfortable and reliable enough to be used as a daily driver. Upon launch, the 996 received quite a lot of criticism from the diehard Porsche fans around the world. This was mainly due to the all new design of the head lights and the smooth sides without any larger wheel arches, like people were used to with a 911. Not to mention the move to a 3.4 litre, water-cooled engine replacing the, previously used for many years, air-cooled engine.

Just four years later the new model 996.2 was released. The newly designed headlights which were more similar to the turbo version car as opposed to the entry-level Boxster, kept the diehard Porsche owners happy, and more importantly, there was a larger 3.6 litre engine powering the new model from 0-62MPH in just 5 seconds.

This particular example is coming to market from a years ownership. After seeing the car for sale and buying it, the itch of owning another Porsche has been scratched, but with such little use, the 996 has spent more time parked up than being driven. The car comes with a solid history file with services from OPC and specialists, and recently had some maintenance conducted to ensure it is ready for sale.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Alan the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I'm a true petrolhead at heart, owning another Porsche was something which was always going to happen.

Alan is no stranger to Porsche and has owned a number of them in the past. He saw this one for sale and purchased it thinking he would use it more than he actually has. This example with the "Turbo twist" wheels and a solid service history made it an easy choice for him when purchasing.

After a years ownership the and the limited use, there are a couple of other factors involved, like getting something which is a little higher and easier to get in and out of, that bring the car back on the market. Feel free to leave any questions in the comments below and Alan will be happy to get back to you.

Exterior

This 996 is the more desirable facelift version - with the convertible roof dropped in 20 seconds, you are ready for summer!

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with "Turbo twist" Porsche wheels, they present in great condition and had a refurbishment in 2019, so look to be free from any corrosion that we could see.

The 18” tyres are all in good condition with a good amount of tread remaining. Take a look at the image gallery to see the detail.

Bodywork

The bodywork on the Porsche is in excellent condition. Walking around the car, the panel gaps all look to be matching as they should and there are no annoying dings.

The convertible roof is in nice condition with just a few crease marks as you would expect. It works as it should, lowering itself at the touch of a button in ~20 seconds.

Paint

Finished in the bright "Arctic Silver", this lovely Porsche 911 stands out in a crowd. In general the car is very well presented. There are some age related marks noticeable around the car, such as small scratches, but these could easily be removed or lessened with a machine polish we think. There are a couple of small stone chips to mention, but definitely less thank you would expect for the age and mileage of the 911.

The images taken are from various angles and reflections showing off the 2004 Carrera 2 at its very best, as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. Please take the time to fully assess the condition of the exterior.

Glass and Trim

There are no noticeable scratches on the windows to point out on the Carrera 2. The window seals all look to be in good condition.

The headlights have gone a slight tinge of yellow as is common, but we think that these could be refurbished with one of the headlight restoration kits you can buy.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a more detailed look at the exterior.

Interior

Luxury blue leather, Tiptronic, perfect for long journeys and driving daily around town alike.

Seats and Carpets

Blue leather was the choice for this German sports car, which matches the roof. The seats are in great order for the age, with minimal wear on the driver’s side bolster. There is just some light creasing/stretching to the base of the driver’s seat. The door cards are in nice condition, there are some light age related marks to the arm rests.

The carpets are in excellent condition having spent most of their life with protective mats in place to the front and rear. In the boot the tool kit and spare wheel are present, along with the cover and carpet in place. The interior gallery section shows more detailed photographs.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in good condition with no obvious damage or marks to the upper section. The instrument cluster looks to be all scratch free, with the odometer showing ~87,402 miles at the time of our visit, and no warning lights displayed.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original steering wheel shows some shining to the leather, but it doesn’t look to show signs of any excessive wear. The Tiptronic buttons mounted either side are working correctly.

The gear knob is in good condition, being a Tiptronic has meant that the gear stick gets little use. Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images of the interior.

Mechanics

A 3.6L flat six was used in this facelift 996 model, which also has the easy to use Tiptronic automatic gearbox.

Engine and Gearbox

Porsche installed the 3.6 litre flat-six, which pushed the power of the 996 up to ~315BHP. The engine runs lovely with no noises coming from the car that shouldn't be there. Alan has had the 6 coil packs replaced in January 2022, at a cost of £427.08, to deal with a slight misfire.

The gearbox is Tiptronic which is changeable from the steering wheel, or can be left in normal automatic mode. The change is effortless and the car pulls well through all of the gears.

As you can see from the cold start video, the Carrera 2 fires up at the first turn of the key and sounds fantastic.

Suspension and Brakes

MacPherson struts with aluminium arms keep the 911 grounded and sitting just as Porsche intended. Looking on the underside, the suspension components do not raise any concerns.

The brakes are cross drilled discs on all four corners. These look to be in good condition, with no lip to the edges of the discs. Alan reports that the car does come to a halt nice and straight without any juddering.

The Drive

The 996 is a great car to be in. The 3.6 sounds fantastic, especially if you have a slightly heavy right foot. There are no noises coming from the suspension whilst riding in the car, and the ride is firm, as you would expect for a performance Porsche.

Electrics and Other

The Porsche has the standard fit CD radio present which is working as it should. The buttons are all in good order with no wear to be seen on the lettering. The four electric windows operate as they should, and there has been a new regulator fitted to the driver’s side door in 2020.

Alan says, that the air-con was working last summer although it wasn't 'ice cold' and would benefit from re-gassing.

History and Paperwork

An excellent history is present with the 996, showing 12 service stamps, a cabriolet with Tiptronic gearbox ready for the better weather ahead.

There is a record of 5 brake fluid changes and 12 service stamps, which shows that the Porsche has been well maintained. The owners manuals are present, along with the radio instructions and wallet. There is also a new, unused spare key fob included. More recently, as detailed the 6 coil packs have been changed and the car comes with ~6 months remaining on the MOT.

Alan will be more than happy to answer any questions you have on this lovely 2004 Porsche 911 (996) Carrera 2 Tiptronic.
