Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

Quality engineering, iconic styling and fantastic performance – when it comes to automotive greatness, the 911 is often unrivalled.

The launch of the 996 generation in 1997 replaced the 993 and marked one of the most significant changes in 911 history, with the introduction of a rear water-cooled flat-six engine and a more curvaceous, spacious and aerodynamic body. The 996 was hauled into the modern era in 2001, where even more revision was updated on the Porsche with new headlamps, revised steering and suspension along with interior upgrades.

This car is a beautifully presented example of a well maintained 996, it comes to market from ~6 year ownership with just ~59,779 miles on the clock. The service history is pretty much in line with the manufacturer guidelines and the car was last serviced in March this year by Porsche specialists. It comes with a host of options which include; Xenon headlights, matching hard top, park assist, cruise control, stainless steel door guards, side skirts, air conditioning, sports exhaust system (no switchable), sports suspension, full leather heated driver and passenger seats and leather front console.

This listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Chris the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

There's nothing quite like a Porsche - great engine tone, superb handling and really fun to drive.

Having owned a Porsche Boxster previously, it's safe to say Chris is a real Porsche fan. Following the sale of his old car, there was a little regret in Chris' mind "After I sold the Boxster I got back into the market to buy another one pretty soon after it had gone". The 996 Carrera came up for sale and Chris knew he had to own this one "There's just nothing quite like it, its an absolute machine that just goes so well".

With a house move on the horizon and another sports car at home, the time has come to let this one go to market "Im spending more time on my other car at the moment, whilst I'll be sad to see this one go, it's the right thing for me at the minute. Who knows, I may end up buying another!". Should any questions be required about the car, Chris would be happy to answer these in the section below.

Exterior

A real head turner in a lovely coat of Lapis Blue, this 996 is beautifully presented, a smart example of the 911 Carrera.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with 18” Carrera 5-spoke alloy wheels, they look to have barely a mark on them, and reflect the condition of the rest of the car. The Porsche emblems present really well across all four corners of the car.

The wheels are wrapped with Michelin Pilot Sport tyres with a spec of 225/40 to the fronts and date codes from 2020. To the rear, these are also wrapped with Michelin Pilot Sport's and show a spec of 285/30 and have date codes from 2018. These look in great condition and appear to have a great amount of tread remaining. Take a look through the gallery section to see more detail on the 996.

Bodywork

The car stands straight, shut lines look good and we could see no visible distortion to the panels. Both doors, boot, and bonnet open and close well, exactly as you would expect from Porsche build quality. An added factory extra is the addition of side skirts to the Porsche exterior which adds another sporty edge to the cars looks. This car comes with a matching hard top too, perfect for the colder months.

We noted a very small ding to the right hand rear of the car, and looking underneath the car there was some sign of some historic scratches to the underside due to the low nature of the car. We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in an attractive coat of "Lapis Blue" (LM5W), the paintwork is even in finish and colour across the exterior of the car. We noted very few issues with the paint when looking over the car although with a good level of polishing, the paintwork would really shine well to remove any swirl marks that can develop with time.

The current owner Chris, let us know that the front bumper was resprayed before he purchased the car and there was also a small sign of touch up paint on the rear spoiler section. There were a few minor stone chipping notes around the wheel arches, although fairly common place on performance cars. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

Side windows, mirrors and lenses all appear in great condition and we could see no sign of scratching or chips on the glass. The windscreen section showed particularly well having been replaced in 2019. A real highlight on the 996 was the condition of the headlights, these were showing very well and looked really standout on the front of the car.

The seals look good around the car and in line with the rest of the condition of the car. Rubber sections on the interior edges looked good and only showed a few signs of wear which is to be expected. The soft top roof could benefit from some re-colouring, just to bring it back to a deeper level of black for the future owner, although, this would only be to bring it up to an even better standard than current.

Take a look through the gallery sections and review video, we take you across all the areas of the car as if you were standing there for yourself. This way, you can see in greater detail what a lovely looking car the Porsche really is.

Interior

With a driver focused cockpit and a smart leather interior, this example has been well cared for and has aged well.

Seats and Carpets

Finished in "Graphite Grey" leather, the seats are in very good condition, with the drivers seat just having a bit of creasing visible to the leather. Seat backs and rear section showed in very good condition with few signs of wear or usage.

Carpet sections showed in great condition on the interior having been replaced in 2019 by Autostyle. The original mats are also included with the final sale, although do show with a little wear as they are original. Equally over in the boot, this area showed no concerns. Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images of the 996.

Dashboard

The leather bound stitched dash looks to be free from any splits and cracks and showed well on our visit, this area looks good in the interior with only minor marks here. The black backed clocks and dials showed nicely with ~59,779 miles at the time of our visit. The display on these sections displayed a lovely level of presentation and are all functional showing clearly with no obvious scratching to the facings.

Centre console plastics look great in the cabin area having been replaced by the current owner. Our interior gallery section takes you over some closer images of the Porsche dashboard, head over and see the car's interior in finer detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A classic Porsche 3-spoke steering wheel finished in matching "Graphite Grey" leather sits at the hands of the driver, this is in good condition and has maintained its looks as well as the rest of the interior.

The 6-speed manual gearstick also shows the same levels of quality as the interior, both sections are straight forward in design and present smartly with only minor levels of wear noted.

Mechanics

With its flat-six water-cooled 3.6L rear mounted engine, the 996 is capable of some impressive performance.

Engine and Gearbox

Porsche are renowned for great quality and fast cars, this is no exception to that rule with its 3.6L engine easily capable of taking the owner up to speed in no time at all. We noted no issues from start up either which we've highlighted in the cold start section of the "Mechanical Review" video.

The car was last serviced in March 2023, and you'll see from the history that the car has been serviced pretty much in line with the manufacturer recommendations. Take a look over the video for yourselves to hear the 996 start up from cold and take in the lovely sounds of the engine and sports exhaust system.

Suspension and Brakes

We noted no knocks, bangs or issue from the suspension when we were on the road in the car, and it gave us no concerns in its performance or handling. The sports suspension (equipment code - 030) is lowered by 10mm more than standard factory spec which makes the ride a little firm, but ultimately provides more grip on the road.

The Porsche brakes bring the car to a halt in a straight line with no juddering reported to come through the pedal and worked as expected. The stopping power and control felt good and worked as to be expected. Please view the mechanical review video and photographs to see close-up and underside images from around the 996.

The Drive

As expected from a car of this calibre, the drive provided by the 996 Carrera 4 is exceptional, with more than enough power, torque, and grip to keep you entertained. We noted no pull from the steering, juddering or unwanted movements. The Porsche also offers a lovely interior complete with modern driver comforts.

Electrics and Other

The Porsche radio fitted into the dash area, was tested and working with an accompanying CD changer in the front boot section. The air conditioning was blowing lovely and cold on our drive out. Also included is the wind deflector as pictured, and a nice feature is that this car is optioned with cruise control.

Chris let us know that he has had no issues with the electrical elements on the car and to the best of his knowledge, everything was working as it should do including the rear spoiler.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~6 year ownership, low mileage for the model and great solid service history, this is a very well presented example of the 996 Carrera 4.

The Carrera 4 comes with 15 service stamps in its original logbook, many from Porsche official and specialist service centres. The 996 has been serviced nearly every year for the past ~13 years and also comes with a clean bill of health on its last MOT.

With 2 sets of keys, the remote on the second set doesn't work though, original leather log case, drivers manual and maintenance books, the 996 also comes with a whole host of factory fitted extras which makes this Porsche particularly appealing. The air-con was recharged and two new AC condenser fitted along with new top mount bump stops in 2022, two new ARB stabiliser droplinks and front outer CV boot was also updated, after an advisory on the MOT, in the same year.

New bonnet struts were fitted in 2021. In 2020; 2 new front tyres were fitted wheels and balanced with a 4-wheel alignment carried out too, major servicing completed, new front disc brakes and pads, anti vibration dampers, brake pad sensors. In 2019; a new windscreen was replaced and new auto interior mats were upgraded. In 2018; 2 new rear tyres were replaced along with a 4 wheel alignment being carried out, the cruise control was rewired and reprogrammed, new centre console installed, new rear discs and pads fitted and a new battery was fitted. In 2017; The cruise control, cooling fan resistor and power steering return pipe were updated and the soft top hood was treated .

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and actioned a HPi check on the vehicle. Should any questions be required, Chris would be happy to answer any of these in the 'ask the owner' section.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house. This is an auction on behalf of a trade seller and normal auction rules apply, i.e. there is no warranty, no return policy and bids are binding with more info in our terms and conditions.
