Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

An intelligent, dependable and addictive driving package - the C2S manual is a sweet spot of the range.

Almost 60 years of development and evolution place the Porsche 911 as one of the most balanced rear-engined sports cars ever created, yet one that can be driven sensibly and able to withstand the daily toil of driving. The 997 evokes a level of satisfaction that only a Porsche can and its very presence conveys an air of solidity and sensible engineering, its pleasures remain undiluted to this day. The Carrera S was first seen in 2004, with a bigger engine offering a useful 10% power hike over the standard Carrera, the Carrera 2 S also sports a quad set of exhausts, which clearly states its intent.

This 2005 example was specified with a full leather interior and has seen the benefit of indoor underground storage. Having covered fewer than 1,000 miles in the last 6 years, the car had still been serviced 3 times over that period, including a recent negative result bore test. Displaying just 44,684 miles, this well-kept six-speed manual Carrera 2 S cabriolet is finished in black, which simply adds to the allure of one of the most favoured of the normally aspirated 997s.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Max the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

It is a great car, really beautiful - so intoxicating.

Max's admiration of his Porsche was evident throughout the time we spent with him, concluding that it offers everything he looks for in a car. When he first bought the car in 2014, it was the ideal companion to roam the roads of Europe, happily cruising the autoroutes in style.

The car has seen reduced usage in recent years, and now Max has relocated back to his native country, and so he has decided to sell his beloved 997.

Exterior

The 911s outline is unmistakable, yet the 997 Carrera S shared very little with previous generations.

Wheels and Tyres

The Carrera S 19" alloys are in good condition, with light scuffs noted on the edge of the rims.

The Michelin front tyres are over 10 years old, with signs of wear noted (see pictures), but nothing flagged up in the recent MOT as an advisory. The rears are in much better shape, coming in at under ten years old.

Bodywork

The car presents well, with no significant issues in terms of body blemishes. The panel gaps and fitment are good and all doors open and close without issues.

The underside of the car, inner wings and sills appear to be in a healthy state.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The paint finish still retains an impressive sheen, with a mirror-like lustre still complementing the shape of the car. There are a handful of minor scuffs noted on the front bumper and air dam, but the rest of the paintwork is well in line with a car of this age and low mileage.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

There were no blemishes noted on the glass, with their seals all looking clean and unencumbered by outdoor elements. The rear hood lid trim was a little loose but clipped back into place. The headlamps, rear and all other lights are in good shape.

Interior

Boasting a full leather cabin, the comfort is almost unparalleled for a sports car.

Seats and Carpets

The leather seats have lasted well, with a light sheen of wear noted only on the driver's seat, with a few marks noted behind both front seats.

The carpets and mats are all intact, with no signs of dampness.

Dashboard

The cabin looks presentable, with no outstanding issues, other than light marks noted on some of the plastics.

The dials and controls are in good shape, with a few of the main dials on the centre console showing slightly more in terms of age (usual issue due to the plastic coating used).

All of the controls are said to function correctly.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Both the steering wheel and gear lever are in good shape, with no outstanding damage.

Mechanics

Easy to drive and to live with, plus there's also 380 bhp lurking within.

Engine and Gearbox

The clean engine presentation aligns with the car's indoor storage and light use over the years.

There were no issues in regard to the engine start-up - no unwanted lights lingered on after the ignition, with no observations of excessive smoke or fluid leaks.

The owner has not reported any issues with the clutch or gearbox, both operating seamlessly.

Suspension and Brakes

The car has no notable flaws in regards to the way it rides, with the adjustable dampers dealing with the speed humps and tatty roads well. No knocks or thuds were observed during the short test run.

The brakes were effective, with no uneven fade and no signs of juddering at town speeds.

The Drive

The appeal of the 911 lies in its ability to be driven in almost any circumstance, as a commuter car, as a long-distance tourer or as a track day car. The ability is always on tap, and it won't come back to haunt you should you choose to push that talent. The Porsche dealt with the unforgivingly busy roads of London without issue, and its light controls and flexibility at low stop-start speeds didn't cause any problems.

The slickness of the gears, the light and direct steering as well as the ergonomic driving position, make it a surprisingly able city car. Of course, it is happier on the open road where the sports exhaust, particularly with the hood dropped down allows it to become a very different proposition.

Electrics and Other

The electrical mechanism for the roof operates perfectly, with no strain noted from the motors. The roof itself is intact, with some light wear marks but appeared to offer a good seal. Max has mentioned that the air-conditioning does not blow ice-cold.

History and Paperwork

This Carrera S comes complete with a comprehensive and reassuring series of service stamps.

The car has seen a stringent record of scheduled maintenance over the years, with a full set of stamps in the servicing booklet. The engine has not needed much work in terms of repairs and there's the added confidence of a negative bore tested when it was last serviced in July 2022. It comes with two keys, its original owner's wallet and has an MOT to July 2023.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
