Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

Rock star performance with an operatic soundtrack, this car can do the school run with ease too.

The Porsche 911's re-invention started with the water-cooled 996 series, but it was the 997 that helped bring the car back in line with its heritage. Successfully combining modern technology and engineering with a shape that is unmistakably 911, the widened body contributed to a more aggressive stance and included several visual elements that finally satisfied the loyal legions of rear-engined Porsche followers. First rolled out in 2004, the 997 series despite its resemblance to the outgoing model, was an extensive reworking of the 911. The Carrera S was the high-tune version of the Carrera and got its own 3.8-litre engine and 30 more horses to boot. Built with a huge amount of driving appeal, thanks to its variableratio power steering and the Porsche Active Suspension Management, it still feels like a car that a driver could control without an overtly digital reliance.

Finished in a subtle "Atlas Grey Metallic", it has over £11,000 worth of factory-fitted options and has seen only 1 former keeper and watertight service history in line with the 2 year recommendation from Porsche. Kitted out in full leather, sunroof, electric seats and rear park assist, this 2005 Carrera S is a beautifully presented example of a well-maintained 997, it comes to market from ~4 year ownership and was last serviced in September last year in line with schedule.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Ian the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I really wish I could keep the car, it's been a superb experience and really is a one car can do it all model.

Kept by its original owner for 14 years, Ian bought the car privately from that first owner back in 2019. He enlisted specialist Autoumbau Porsche to carry out a detailed check, satisfied with its remarkably low mileage and positive service history, he has since enjoyed the car mainly as a leisure tool adding ~17,000 miles over ~4 years.

Due to a forthcoming emigration, he has decided to sell the car. It was last serviced in September 2022 and comes with an MOT until October 2023. Ian will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Eye-catching with its timeless hue, this 997 is beautifully presented, a smart example of the 911.

Wheels and Tyres

Optioned with the distinctive 19” Carrera Sport alloys, these are free of any blemishes and make for a change to the "Lobster Claw" wheels you often see on a 997 S.

Fitted with a full set of Bridgestone Potenzas, the front pair date from 2018, the rear ones are less than 2 years and all reveal a healthy amount of tread.

Bodywork

The exterior of the car is in very good shape, free of dents or discernable corrosion. The panel fit is true, with even panel gaps and flush-fitting bumpers. The doors open and close with ease. The structure of the car is solid, with no observation of damage on the floor pan or bulkheads.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The "Atlas Grey Metallic" paint has a decent lustre, with no significant swirling and is evenly matched. There are a handful of minor nose chips and a few light scuffs noted on the body, but nothing we think can’t be resolved by a detailer.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass is in good shape, all have decent seals. The windscreen has a small chip, but it is out of the eye-line of the driver and has not been flagged as an advisory.

The lights and lens are all neatly presented and the trim is intact.

Interior

Fitted with several dealer options, the interior shows plenty of evidence of considerate ownership and is well presented.

Seats and Carpets

The leather seats are neatly presented in black leather, full electric adjustable seats optioned from factory. With a little wear on the driver's side bolster and mild indentation observed, the other seats all look excellent.

The carpets and mats are all intact, bone dry and free of any significant wear. The luggage area is clean and suggests very little use.

Dashboard

The dashboard is wrapped in matching leather, and no outstanding issues observed. Typical for the 997, some of the rubber coating has worn somewhat on a few switches and there are age-related marks around the gear lever housing. That said, everything works perfectly, including the air-con. The binnacle is intact with fully legible dials.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and switches are in decent shape, with some light signs of age on the rim, this car optioned with the Tiptronic and infotainment controls. The automatic gear selector is tidy too.

Mechanics

A solid service has ensured that the car has been reliable, the 3.8L S engine giving a significant power boost to a standard 997.

Engine and Gearbox

The cold start video didn’t suggest anything untoward, with the engine firing up with no issues or observation of dashboard warning lights. The engine sounds tight, appeared to be leak free on the day and idled with ease. The car was last serviced in September 2022, and you'll see from the history that the car has been serviced every ~2 years in line with the Porsche schedule for a 997.

The gearbox was demonstrated to be fully operational with no apparent issues to note. Watch the video to see and hear the car in action.

Suspension and Brakes

The ride was smooth with no unwanted noises or creaks heard from the wheels, cornering without any issues.

The Turbo-sourced brakes proved to be efficient, with no squeals or imbalance.

The Drive

Part of the 997 series model's characteristics is highlighted by its remarkably manageable day-to-day abilities, thanks to its Tiptronic gearbox and practical ergonomics. Sometimes it is easy to forget that there is a 355 hp flat-six mounted right at the back of the car, but the agile feel of the steering and the feedback offers the driver a constant reminder of the car's potency even at low speeds.

A gentle blip of the throttle changes the demeanour of the Carrera S, yet the driver still maintains complete control thanks to the Porsche Active Suspension Management. With no reported issues in terms of the oil pressure or engine temperature, thanks to a good record of maintenance, the engine revs nicely and freely.

Electrics and Other

The car was ordered with over £11,000 worth of optional extras from new, including full electric front seats, electric sunroof, Navigation/telephone PCM, rear park assist and tracker.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~4 year ownership, just 1 former keeper, a low mileage for the model of ~59,000 and a solid service history, this is a well presented example.

The car was first registered by Porsche Park Lane in November 2005, the car retains its new vehicle invoice and is fitted with over £11,000 worth of optional extras. The car has not needed much mechanical attention, other than the expected servicing, health checks and sundry items. Since taking the car on in 2019, Ian has kept on top of the cosmetic issues, has kept on top of each issue and has documented the minor issues that have come up, which included a door handle repair, PCM attention, new bonnet struts, rear bumper repaint and a slight quibble from the suspension. The tally of spending over his 4 years of ownership is ~£5,300. It has 11 Porsche dealer and Porsche specialist servicing stamps, an HPi report, a good body of previous MOTs, two keys and comes with an MOT to November 2023.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
