Introduction

In the case of the Porsche 911, the word icon is surely entirely appropriate. For many in the know, the 997.2 models represent a range sweet-spot among the water-cooled cars.

The 997 family of 911s arrived in 2005. In typical Porsche fashion, to the uninitiated the cars appeared to be merely a mild evolution of the 996. Those in the know, however, will understand that's not the Stuttgart way. There is a wealth of changes and improvements at play here above and beyond the most obvious change - the return to round headlights from the signature "fried egg" examples of the 996. Relevant to this car, the 997 was the first 911 model where development of the cabriolet was undertaken ahead of the coupe. The Porsche received wisdom was that if they perfected the more difficult cabriolet first, then the subsequent coupe would be more rigid and robust still.

The 997.2 model featured here resulted from a mid-life refresh to the 997 in 2009. It was at this juncture that Porsche introduced their Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe, or "PDK" transmission to replace the aging Tiptronic S. In essence a dual-clutch, seven speed automatic transmission, the PDK equipped cars often recorded the best acceleration times in tests due to their ability to achieve lightening fast gear changes.

This particular car coming to market is in remarkable condition considering the age and mileage. Being a 997.2 4S, these cars had the potential engine issues of the Gen I cars ironed out, and some important developments in the running gear and systems. Optioned from factory with some desirable features; the 7 speed PDK, Sports Chrono Plus, PSM/PASM, Switchable sports exhaust, Sports steering wheel with shift paddles. A solid spec, if you're in the market for a Carrera 4S cabriolet, take a good look at this one.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Andrew after meeting Tim the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

This isn't my first Porsche, but it's the one that has impressed me the most, it's easy to see why.

Tim has only owned this car for a short while and confesses it will be a wrench to see it go. It is clear from his enthusiasm for the car during our on the road video that this won't be his last Porsche.

He has been particularly impressed with the lightening-fast responses of the PDK transmission and with the myriad of options provided by the drive modes and the PASM dynamic suspension set up. In just a short time, it is clear that this car has left an indelible impression on Tim. He will be happy to answer any questions on the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Resplendent in GT Silver Metallic paintwork and riding on gloss black 19" Turbo II wheels, this 997.2 is a guaranteed head-turner.

Wheels and Tyres

The wheels fitted to this 911 C4S are the Porsche 19" Turbo II five spoke examples, finished in gloss black with contrasting red calipers on the brakes. The wheels present in excellent condition throughout and are protected by Porsche, Thatcham approved locking wheel nuts.

Tyres are high-quality Michelin Pilot Super Sports all round in 235/35 ZR19 configuration at the front and 305/30 ZR19 to the rear.

Bodywork

Being a 4S, the car features the widebody design of the 997, shared with the Turbo. The bodywork appears to be in excellent, original condition with no areas of imperfection noted or reported.

The panel gaps are tight and symmetrical, as you would expect out of Stuttgart, with doors and other panels opening and closing with vault-like precision. View the images and videos to see the detail.

Paint

The Porsche "GT Silver Metallic" paintwork is in excellent condition throughout. It is deep and lustrous and as exquisitely applied as you might expect for a Porsche.

The colour of the paint appears even across all the bodywork and panels, and is remarkably mark free given the age and mileage of the car. View the images to see the detail.

Glass and Trim

The cabin glass appears unmarked with no chips or cracks noted. Mirrors and light lenses are equally pristine.

The black, fabric hood is in a good overall condition and operates quickly and smoothly as can be seen in our exterior review video. The hood can also be operated from the ignition key if required.

Interior

The 997 featured a significant interior revision over the 996. It was a big step up and that's obvious from behind the wheel.

Seats and Carpets

The black, perforated leather sports seats are in fine fettle overall with no areas of concern noted. The seats are electrically heated and feature the extra hard backrest shells, inscribed with the Porsche script.

The black, woolen carpets are protected by official Porsche carpet mats which has helped preserve them in an excellent, overall condition.

Dashboard

In signature 911 fashion, the instrument binnacle is dominated by the central tachometer, redlined at over 7,000RPM. The dials are in the optional silver finish which looks very distinctive. This car includes the desirable Sports Chrono Package Plus that not only includes the sublime, dash top stopwatch but provides additional functionality and control for the driving modes and adaptive suspension settings.

The dash top and face are leather finished and are in excellent condition throughout.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The multi function, 3 spoke leather rimmed steering wheel is in an excellent, unmarked condition. It also features the alloy paddles for manually changing gears when required.

The leather and alloy topped gear lever operates the PDK gearbox and is also in an excellent condition.

Mechanics

The "4", "S" and PDK here are significant, more power and twice the traction make for a real world, sling-shot performance in all conditions.

Engine and Gearbox

Boasting a larger and more powerful 3.8L engine over the standard Carerra, this is a Porsche with serious performance potential. A sub-5 second 0-60 and 185+ MPH should be enough for most people. Being a Gen II 997, the issues around bore score were resolved with the engine revisions.

These's not too much to see under the rear hatch of a 997.2, but this car starts, idles and runs as you would expect for such a performance oriented machine. Our ride in the car and owner Tim's experience attests to the reliability and usability of the car.

Suspension and Brakes

This 997 benefits from PSM and PASM adjustable suspension, affording options around ride height and compliance of ride. In the standard mode the car is surprisingly compliant and comfortable, even on our potholed country roads.

The brakes are large vented disks front and rear providing the 997 with almost physics defying stopping ability when called upon.

The Drive

We were able to enjoy a ride out in the car during our visit. We can confirm that this is a car perfectly capable of tickling along gently and comfortably with no issues at all. When the mood takes you, however, this is a very capable performance thoroughbred with eye-widening acceleration and a spine tingling sound to match.

With a quick acting electric hood which can be operated at up to 32MPH and that four wheel drive system, this is really a car that can handle everything our changeable UK weather can throw at it.

Electrics and Other

There's a wealth of electrical systems on this car helping to provide the driver with all the assistance and protection they will ever need. We witnessed many of these operating perfectly and owner Tim reports that all systems are operating as you would expect from a premium car of this nature.

View the spec list in the "History and Paperwork" gallery of the listing. Some key features that the discerning buyer looks for; PCM 3.0, Bose Surround Sound system, cruise control, auto dimming mirrors.

History and Paperwork

A Gen II 997, with all important 3.8L S engine, lightening fast PDK gearbox, and widebody cabriolet styling shared with the Turbo.

As you will see the car has a good depth of provenance providing paperwork in its file. These, of course, include the current V5 and hard copy MOT. Additionally there is the stamped service book, numerous invoices supporting the stamps and a very interesting, mu;t-page build-record recording the huge specification of this car. Thanks – I was referrring to the 2 invoices from Drandera you have loaded. One refers to recovery and the other to a new skirt, rear lights etc. It was quite big invoice with over £500 or labour, not a big deal but just checking if you were aware as you may have investigated when you bought the car

There are a couple of references in the paperwork to ‘recovery’ and possibly repairs – mention of the side skirt. Has it had an accident repair that you are aware of?

Hi Tim
The description says its wide bodied turbo look. Is that correct as the image shows a standard shape. My previous SSE had a very flared backside arches.

Hi Tim, what’s the reason for sale if you’ve only had the car for a month or so?

Also, have the rads been checked for damage – I couldn’t see anything in the s/h referring to these?

My understanding is that bore scoring is far more likely to occur on 3.8 engines on 997 – do you have any paperwork/knowledge of this having been checked by a reputable specialist please?
