Introduction

Isaac Wass
Professional Consigner

With bags of power, plenty of comfort, and surprising practicality, Targa 4S offers a unique driving experience unlike anything else in its class.

The Porsche 911 Targa was first introduced in September of 1965, at the time it was the first safety cabriolet with a fixed roll bar, making it one of a kind in its design. Porsche have since made numerous revisions to the Targa platform, culminating in the release of the Porsche 911 Targa 4S (997.2) in 2009, equipped with direct fuel injection and the optional extra of Porsche’s brilliant PDK gearbox. With the introduction of the 997.2 the car received an additional rear hatch, adding heaps of practicality to the vehicle by introducing an easily accessible 230 litres of luggage space - making this the perfect car for trips such as the NC500.

This car, first registered in 2011, comes with a list of optional extras that make it a smart choice. These options include; PDK Gearbox, 19” Turbo Wheels, Rear Parking Aid, Sports Chrono Plus, and Extended Navigation Module PCM 3. The car has always been serviced at a Official Porsche Centre as per the schedule and its 5 service stamps. The owner has renewed the Porsche warranty for another year too, this triple black Targa 4S needs a good look if you're in the market for one currently.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Isaac after meeting Sanjay the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

This has been the perfect car for every outing, even on my morning commute through twisting back roads in the Targa 4S I’m guaranteed to arrive not only on time, but with a smile on my face too.

Sanjay purchased this car from Porsche Chester, the original seller of the vehicle in 2011, with the list of optional extras making the car just that little bit more irresistible. Having owned the car for the last three years he has truly enjoyed the experience, using it for everything from morning commutes to a week long excursion to Scotland to drive the infamous NC500.

In keeping with his love for the car, Sanjay has kept it regularly serviced, stored in a genuine Porsche all-weather fitted car cover, and hooked up to the genuine Porsche trickle charger - both of which will come with the vehicle. Not only this but he has renewed the manufacturer warranty with Porsche for a further 12 months, expiring on 15.07.2023 at a personal expense of ~£1,000. He will be happy to answer any questions on the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Featuring a face lifted front end, iconic chrome window strip and the panoramic glass roof, the 911 Targa 4S turns heads from every angle.

Wheels and Tyres

This car was optioned with 19" Turbo wheels from factory, the 5 spoke design showing off the drilled brake discs. The wheels are in generally good condition, with no corrosion visible. There is some minor scuffing visible on the alloy faces which can be seen in the gallery images and ‘Exterior Review’ video.

The tyres all appear to be in good condition with no damage to the side walls and a good amount of tread left on all four corners. The car is currently running a matching set of Bridgestone tyres all round.

Bodywork

The bodywork on this Targa 4S is in great condition, as far as we can tell it appears to have had no knocks, scrapes, or other such dings. All panel gaps appear to be even and symmetrical, and all panels look to be straight and true.

All exterior aspects of the car work as expected, including the hinges and fastening mechanism on the Targa hatch which can be a costly problem to fix. We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The "Basalt Black Metallic" paintwork is in great condition with no major defects present. Being a black car it does suffer from general swirl marks and wash marring which can be seen in the "Exterior Review" video, however this does not take away from the stunning depth this colour has, and the final gloss of the paintwork.

The only notable exceptions to the condition of the paintwork is one spot on the rear bumper where there are some minor surface abrasions present, we believe this would easily polish out in the hands of a professional, a minor abrasions caused by the car cover rubbing against the paintwork during the particularly windy start to the year. There are two small stone chips to the nearside of the Porsche crest on the bonnet and just below on the bumper, around 10cm away.

However on the whole the paintwork is in great condition. Again, we have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

Glass is a big talking point on this car given that the entire roof is made of it, that being said there really isn’t much to say about the glass on this car, there were no visible chips, scratches, or cracks at the time of our visit and the Targa roof functioned exactly as it should with no clunking, jamming, or scraping. The Targa roof opens in just a few seconds, allowing a gentle breeze to enter the vehicle without any loud buffeting of wind.

Exterior trim pieces match the condition of the car on the whole, showing very little wear and still retaining the factory finish, even the chrome window strip has managed to avoid any tarnishing in its 11 years on the road.

Interior

As with all 911s, the cabin is truly driver-centric with a five gauge clock layout offering up any/all information at a glance. Paired with the near 360 degree visibility in the Targa 4S, this makes for a truly engaging experience for driver and passenger alike.

Seats and Carpets

The all black full leather upholstery is in great condition, we could not see any rips, splits, or scratches to the hide during our time with the vehicle, and the carpet is in a similar condition showing little to no signs of heavy wear and tear. The pile is deep and really adds just an extra layer of luxury to the interior.

Dashboard

The dashboard is well presented, featuring a centre mounted screen for navigation and media. The dashboard itself is wrapped in leather, matching the door cards and seats, yet another nod to the quality of design present in these cars.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is in great condition, featuring the Porsche logo in the centre and the ‘PDK’ detail just above the airbag. The leather is not visibly worn, and the stitching appears to be in good condition too.

The gear stick is not only in good condition but the surrounding trim is too. Both pieces show the condition of the car well, with little to no signs of wear whatsoever.

Mechanics

The 4S’s 3.8L flat six engine pumps out a staggering ~380BHP, all accessible through the brilliant PDK gearbox and 4 wheel drive system, capable of propelling the car from 0-60MPH in just 4.5s.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine is accessible through a small hatch to the rear of the vehicle, where the condition of the casings and protective covers can be seen to be in accordance with the rest of the vehicle. Upon starting the car cold the engine quickly roars to life with almost no hesitation, it sits at a higher idle for a period of time as part of its cold start procedure, then settles back down to a quiet burble.

Under general driving the engine handles mild acceleration and town driving speeds very well, only sipping at its available power. However when you put the car into sport mode, and engage the longer gear ratios of the PDK gearbox, the car will launch forward with acceleration that is blisteringly quick and yet still incredibly smooth - a testament to the engineering present in this vehicle. Watch the video to see the car in action.

Suspension and Brakes

As standard the car comes with PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management) and PSM (Porsche Stability Management), these two systems work wonders in terms of managing driving experience, when entering into sports mode the suspension stiffens up and drops a further 10mm to allow a lower centre of gravity, when paired with the PSM system the car will actively increase traction, reduce pitching, as well as stabilise and correct oversteer and understeer. These systems really turn the car from a quick car to a fast car.

During our road test the suspension worked wonderfully, taking uneven terrain in its stride without ever seeming crashy or abrupt. There were no audible knocks or bangs from any of the suspension components that we could hear, and the car cornered exceptionally well. Stopping power is something ultimately very important to a car of this calibre, and the Targa 4S is certainly not short of it. The brake system was improved for the release of the Targa 4S, this time with four pot callipers and 330mm cross drilled and vented front discs.

During our time with the vehicle the stopping power was not to be sniffed at, with a very responsive brake pedal and incredible amounts of bite - Sanjay took us from speed to an almost standstill in a matter of seconds. The brakes are easily visible through the wheels on our gallery images and ‘Exterior Review’ video so we encourage you to take some time and take a look for yourself.

The Drive

If we hadn't already said it - it drives exceptionally! We simply couldn't get enough of this fantastic example. From driving through the grounds of Wynyard Hall, to barrelling down local B-roads, this car was a hoot from the moment we climbed in to the moment we got out.

It accelerates with incredible pace, handles corners with ease, and stops at a moment's notice, all while giving you breathtaking views of the countryside and a gentle breeze in your hair. Being the 4S model, this car comes with the 3.8L flat six engine outputting ~380bhp which is managed by Porsche’s fantastic PDK gearbox and delivered to the tarmac through all four wheels. The combination of all of the above allows a driving experience quite unique to the Targa 4S, with oodles of power, plenty of comfort, and surprising practicality, there isn’t much this car isn’t good for.

Electrics and Other

The electrical systems in this vehicle are many, from nose to tail there is a system for every action. However during our time spent with the vehicle we noticed absolutely no faults with any of the electrical systems we saw in action.

Sometimes the biggest worry when buying a 911 Targa 4S such as this one, is the Targa roof developing faults, or the hatch rattling and squeaking as you drive. Fortunately we’re happy to report that during our "On The Road" video we noticed no such problems, and we even filmed the rear of the car specifically to listen for any rattles, bangs, or bumps and we heard absolutely nothing. You can check out the "On The Road" video for yourself to see the portion of video just described.

It's worth noting also that the car comes with a Porsche warranty, 2 driver cards for the Porsche tracking system and manual as pictured, an official Porsche trickle charger and outdoor car cover.

History and Paperwork

Finished in a triple black colourway, this Targa 4S comes with a full main dealer service history and a years Porsche warranty, with just ~28,500 miles covered, it is a fine example coming to market.

With every service stamp and invoice relating to this car being from a Porsche main dealer, you can rest assured that it has been maintained by the best.

Not only has the car been well maintained and regularly serviced, it comes with genuine Porsche warranty extended by Sanjay himself just a few weeks ago for an additional 12 months at a cost of £1,020. Evidence of this can be seen in the documentation images below. All MOT’s and services are recorded below in chronological order. In addition to this, the car has the Porsche tracking system which comes with 2 cards as pictured, an official Porsche trickle charger and an outdoor car cover.

There’s no picture of the service book stamped in 2021, but there is an invoice for the service, did the garage miss the book and if so is it possible to have this corrected before delivery?

Hi. Did you investigate further as to the rattle coming from the central area of the dash.

Hi Sanjay. On your Porsche Service report 1/7/21 under technicians report it said they were investigating a rattle from the central dash area. Was just questioning this. Thanks
