Introduction

Alan Staurt
Professional Consigner

The Alpine GTA was built by a company with impeccable racing heritage, and at its launch it set a world record for aerodynamics, making it quicker than many premium competitors.

The Alpine GTA also known as Grand Tourisme Alpine was first launched by Alpine in 1985, the successor to the A310, the first Alpine produced 100% by Renault. The car featured a V6 PRV engine with a rear-mounted layout, extensive use of polyester plastic and fibreglass body panels, which made it faster than the Porsche 944 at the time. The GTA (A610) was one of the most aerodynamic cars of its time, recording 0.28 drag coefficient in its class.

This lovely and very rare V6-powered 2+2 sports coupé is presented in a eye-catching bright red paintwork and is powered by the rear-mounted PRV V6 engine delivering ~157bhp to the rear wheels. It’s been with Mike, the owner, for 3 years now, who is now downscaling his collection of interesting cars.

This listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Mike the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've always loved unique cars and this Renault-Alpine GTA sure is one of them with only ~100 examples remaining on UK roads.

Mike was first attracted to the GTA's unique styling and interior layout, he also loves the performance which the rear-mounted V6 offers along with the incredible sound track that the car provides on every journey.

Mile was hoping to keep this example to enjoy for many years over his retirement, however due to a recent new classic purchase which will be used for weddings, he is selling the Alpine to make way for more cars in the future.

Mike will be on hand to answer any questions about this unique car in the comments below.

Exterior

Renault-Alpine updated the GTA with fibreglass, polymer plastic, body-integrated bumpers, triangular C-pillars and a large rear windshield which updated the car's silhouette and improved the aerodynamics.

Wheels and Tyres

The wheels are equipped with aerodynamic turbine style wheel caps, saving even more weight from the already slim GTA V6. On this example, the wheels appear well cared for, with only the slightest signs of wear as you can see in the images.

The wheels are fitted with Toyo tyres at the front and Marshal at the rear. The front tyres appear in good condition, with a good amount of tread remaining. At the most recent MOT the inspector noted 'slightly cracking' rear tyres as an advisory.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer view yourself.

Bodywork

The bodywork of this GTA V6 looks in good condition.

Panel gaps around the car look as you would expect for a fibreglass car from the '80s with just some minor cracking is starting to appear.

During our visit we didn't spot any obvious dings down the flanks of the car, we just noticed some slight bubbling to the passengers door and markings to the roof.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Presented in a bright red colour, the paint is finished to a lovely standard, with even coverage and colour across each panel.

We did notice some areas of blistering to the passengers door, and slight cracking to both the front and back offside lights, and markings to the roof - you can see these defects in the photos and video below.

Again, we have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork and paint for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this GTA example looks in line with the mileage and ownership, we noticed some very small areas of marking and damage to the laminate on the front windscreen. The window seals look good too and in line with the rest of the condition of the car.

The body-coloured bumpers, door handles, and window surrounds all look in good condition.

Please take a look at the exterior photos to see these details up close.

Interior

Cabin room was greatly increased to offer all passengers a spacious and inviting touring interior.

Seats and Carpets

The grey cloth seats have held their shape and condition very well over the years, There are only slight signs of age on the seats and the drivers bolster would benefit with some new foam.

A similar story is told with the door cards, headlining and carpets.

Please take a look at the extensive media for a detailed view of the cabin.

Dashboard

The dashboard is covered in a dark black plastic finish and presents a space age set up with two dials and a trip computer in front of the driver.

The dashboard in this GTA shows no signs of any major damage, just some very light marks with use over the years. No warning lights were displayed, the odometer showed a reading of ~128,450 miles on our visit.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A standard Alpine wheel is fitted, with a black grip. This original steering wheel presents in great condition, the black gear stick looks good too.

Take a look at the image gallery to see the detail.

Mechanics

Lighter and quicker than rivals such as the Porsche 944 - the GTA V6 had so much going for it.

Engine and Gearbox

Fitted with the 2.9L carbureted V6, the car offered ~158bhp to the rear wheels when new.

On the day of our visit we started the car and it performed well out on the road, the engine pulled nicely, idled smoothly, and ran without fault.

Mike reports the car starts from cold with no issues and drives well with its smooth manual five-speed gearbox powering the rear wheels.

Take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting from cold, driving around, and for a closer look underneath the GTA, and the engine bay.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension performed well out on our short road trip.

Regarding the brakes, Mike reports the callipers were addressed when he purchased the car around 3 years ago.

On our short drive in the car, it felt just as you'd expect for a sporty grand tourer from the '80s - coming to a stop too without fault too.

The Drive

The GTA certainly provides and interesting and head turning addition to any collectors' garage.

The GTA fired up the first time with no issues to report. On the road with Mike, the car felt tight, it had plenty of power to push it along the road. We didn’t notice any unusual noises coming from the engine or suspension either.

Please watch the On the Road video to hear the car staring from cold and going out on a short run. Alan, our photographer does mention it's a 1990 car in the video, however, it is 1989 being registered on 22.09.1989.

Electrics and Other

We didn’t try all the electrics during our visit, but Mike reports that to his knowledge all of the electrics are functional and operational, in line with the rest of the condition of the car.

History and Paperwork

Coming out of ~3 years ownership with an Alpine fan and serious petrolhead, this GTA V6 is ready to be used and enjoyed this summer.

The car is coming out of a ~3 year ownership with Mike with the car being highly original with no modifications.

Please take a look at this history and paperwork media to see the previous MOT reports.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.
