Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Consigner and Editor

The Clio Baccarà offers bags of plush practicality and efficiency, and might surprise the casual driver with its dynamics and charm.

The Clio was first seen in 1990, created to replace the iconic Renault 5, one of the first FWD Superminis. With a refinement rarely seen on Superminis, the all-new Clio inherited much of the 5's good qualities, adding comfort, grip, and safety. While Renault is also respected for its engine efficiency and durability, it was the memorable and successful advertisement 'Nicole & Papa' campaign that helped to establish Clio as the best-selling Renault of the 1990s.

Launched in the UK in the spring of 1991, a comprehensive line-up of 3 and 5-door hatchbacks was available, with a series of new engines ranging from 1.2 to 2.0 litres. Sat in the upper echelons of the phase one line-up, was the Baccarà model. Furnished with metallic paint, a fully colour-coded exterior finish, front fog lights, alloy wheels, leather seats and wood trim, the Baccarà is a plusher version of the standard Clio, adding a little additional exclusivity to an already appealing model. Originally fulfilling a role as both a car for small families or a stylish city runabout, the phase one Clio has now become quite hard to find, particularly in solid and original condition.

Originally registered in 1993, this 1.4-litre 5-door automatic Baccarà has been in the same family since new and has rarely strayed away from the Isle of Wight. In very original condtion, with an excellent interior and clean bodywork, it has just ~27,218 miles on the clock. It is sold with 13 service stamps, 12 Months MOT and its original owner's manual.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Ian the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

My mother purchased the car new from the local Renault dealer, and it's pretty much stayed on the Isle since!

Bought to replace Ian's mothers previous Renault in 1991, Ian took over the ownership of the car following her passing in 2012. Keeping it as a daily runabout, he appreciates its compact size, comfort and ease of driving.

However he plans to upgrade to a new car within the month, so the Clio is now surplus to his needs. He's just had a fresh MOT actioned, and had the car professionally valeted in preparation for sale. Ian will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Well-presented and original, this Clio has clearly been looked after.

Wheels and Tyres

The lattice Baccarà-specific alloy wheels are in good condition except for the obvious under lacquer corrosion as pictured, ideal candidates for a refurb.

The front tyres are Nexens and are recent fittings. The rears are Kumho and are around ten years old. All have decent tread.

Bodywork

The body is well presented, with a positive panel fit and even shut lines. Aside from a minor dent on the nose of the bonnet, the car is free of panel damage. All of the doors open and close with no issues. There is a little exposed metal with surface corrosion on the edge of the nearside rear wing where it meets the boot, and a little corrosion is emerging on the rear offside inner door panel.

The front subframe has a mild coating of surface corrosion, but it appears to be structurally positive. The floor pan, wheel wells, suspension mounts and engine bay are solid. We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The metallic grey paint has a consistent hue, offering a positive lustre with no significant swirls. The smooth finish of the paintwork suggests it spends much of its time stored in a garage. There are a few minor marks and light scuffs across the car - the most noticeable can be seen above the nearside arch and a light mark on the nearside rear shoulder line and boot lid.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass is all in good shape with minimal marks and good seals. The lights and lenses are positive, all free of damage or fade.

Some of the plastic trim, such as the windscreen scuttle and rear boot trim has faded somewhat but could be brought back to a darker colour. The nearside door mirror has a hasty repair and some of the side glass weather rubber sealing strips show their age. The rest of the body trim and Baccara-specific badging is in good condition. The offside section of the rear bumper is slightly out, but otherwise, both bumpers are well-mounted with light scuffs on the plastic trim.

Interior

The cabin's excellent condition reflects the cars careful use and low mileage.

Seats and Carpets

The grey leather seats have been well-preserved and retain good support. There are some light age-related creases on the leather but nothing to really detract from this low mileage example.

The carpets are also in good condition, all are damp-free. The boot trim and carpet suggest minimal use over the years.

Dashboard

The plastic dashboard is cleanly presented with no outstanding damage or marks, apart from minor scuffs on the moulding of the top of the heater controls. The wood is in good shape too.

The dials, controls and switches are in good condtion and Ian has stated everything works. The original FM/Tape player has been retained. The headlining, door cards and plastic trim are in good order, with no notable marks.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and gear selector are free of damage and present well.

Mechanics

The 1.4 engine is a lively and refined performer with excellent fuel economy.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine powered up immediately with no hesitancy, as the dashboard warning lights remained off. There was no excess smoke from the exhaust and the car idled smoothly and quietly while on tick over. We didn’t see any evidence of fluid leaks on the ground.

The 1.4-litre engine is cleanly presented with mild signs of age on some of the metal components. The plastic components, hoses and ancillaries look good and it wouldn’t take much work to get the engine looking like new!

The automatic gearbox operates without fault, selecting ratios swiftly and without any slippage. Watch the video to see and hear the car on the road.

Suspension and Brakes

The Clio rides smoothly, with no notable negative feedback, its dampers were silent and we didn’t hear any knocks or thuds from the wheels.

The braking is smooth and free of judders or noises.

The Drive

The Clio was one of a new generation of 1990s French cars, which maintained a tradition for both comfort and an able chassis - even the most lowly powered and base spec models still offered a spirited driving experience. With the 1.4-litre engine, the Baccara has enough pep on longer journeys, and it is a perfect and economical companion for the town. This era of French car design is often considered a sweet spot for the Supermini, simple mechanics with electronic enhancements, and tried and tested running gear often meant a pain-free ownership experience.

The car is remarkably refined around town. Its light, nimble steering is direct and free of play, as the car cornered silently around the gentle bends. The ride felt composed, with no unwanted mechanical noises. Due to the nature of the roads and traffic on the Isle of Wight, Ian didn't push it beyond 40 mph but the car pulled smoothly with no engine undulations. It has been regularly maintained and any issues have been addressed by a local mechanic. Ian has not reported any problems with oil pressure or engine temperature.

Electrics and Other

Ian told us all the electrical components were functioning, to his knowledge. The electric sunroof operates with no strain and retains its split fabric visors.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market family owned from new living its life on the Isle of Wight, despite its low mileage, it has still received 13 service stamps.

Originally registered at Renault's main Isle of Wight dealer Harwoods in August 1993, it was picked up new by the current owner's mother, who only used the car locally. Once passed into Ian's hands he replaced the cam belt in 2013 and once again in 2022, along with a new water pump. Bills over the last ~3 years show around £1,000 worth of invoices outlining that it only needed servicing and replacement of sundry items such as wipers and braking parts.

The car has 13 service stamps; 4 early stamps from the main dealer and the remaining from a local garage. It's fitted with new front tyres and has 12 months of MOT. Ian has offered to deliver the car to Southampton via the ferry, at his cost, should that be useful to the winning bidder.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price that the seller will let the car go for. We work with sellers to set realistic reserves in line with market pricing – we don’t take on vehicles with unrealistic pricing. Reserve met / not met labeling may or may not be announced during the auction – this is just like a traditional auction house, i.e. bidders may only know when they’ve been successful at the end of the auction.

If the reserve hasn’t been met at the end of the auction then we work with the highest bidder to try to work out a deal with the seller.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
