Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Photographer and Editor

Lean, agile and dynamic to drive, the Clio Williams is one the greatest hot hatches of the 1990s.

Renault has achieved over 125 years of successful competition history, from the Monte Carlo Rally, and Formula One to the current E-TECH hybrid technology. Passion, heritage and a focused racing development run deep within the brand's DNA. Picking the freshly introduced Clio, the 2.0-litre version was created for homologation in 1993 and marketed to capitalise on the success of the Renault-powered Formula One team WilliamsF1. Following the original iteration's rapid sales, the near-identical Williams 2 and Williams 3 models were released.

Based on the 16V engine, the Williams used a new crankshaft, pistons, camshafts and con rods, which allowed a peakier performance from the 2-litre block, which was complemented by the stronger subframe, an upgraded gearbox, bespoke four-to-one manifold and uprated suspension. Characterised by its gold rims, bonnet intake and subtle graphics, the Williams became an instant classic. Free of frivolities to keep weight down, the car was still plushly finished inside with figure-hugging sports seats, colour-coded seat belts and instruments.

This 1995 example is one of 482 Williams 2's imported into the UK and has been in the same family since 1997. Reading just ~85,206 miles, it is completely original, free of modifications, it’s mechanically robust and has a clean interior. This car, which is shod with a set of flawless alloys, will require some cosmetic work to bring up to scratch. Sold with an MOT to June 2025, it also comes with its owner wallet.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Tristan the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

My Mother had an original Renault Williams. I used to drive that around and absolutely loved it!

The Clio Williams fantastic car to drive. It has great acceleration and is a jot to drive on twisty roads. And it has gold wheels. What’s not to love?! I’m not a huge F1 fan but obviously it commemorates a huge accomplishment for Williams in F1.

Sadly Tristan doesn't really drive anywhere these days, so it’s not getting the love it needs. He will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

There are a few cosmetic distractions and the sills will need attention, but the Williams appears to be completely original.

Wheels and Tyres

The 15” Speedline Williams wheels are in excellent condition.

They are complemented by a complete set of Continental tyres dating from 2019. All are in good shape with plenty of life in them.

Bodywork

The engine bay, subframe and boot floor are solid, although both sills, particularly near the rear suspension mounts and sections of the floor pan will need attention. The bottoms of the front wheel wells, where they meet the sills and the rear chassis rails near the exhaust also show corrosion.

The body panels are flush and have even shut lines. The body panels have minor dents, most of which could be treated. The main damage is on the top of the driver's door, which has paint damage too. There are also a few rust spots on some of the door panels, the main issue being the boot. Areas around the rear wiper arm and inside of the boot lid have corroded. We also noted a coat of corrosion under both passenger doors.

There are also smaller corrosion spots on the A-pillars and the top of the driver door. The rear wheel arches look good and the door wells are solid.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The 449 Metallic Sports Blue paint has an even coverage and is consistent in hue with some age-related hazing. The body has minor marks and scuffs, with a couple of scratches spotted on the bonnet, boot lid and nearside rear wing. There is also a large paint chip on the top of the passenger door and the nearside corner of the bonnet.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass is all in good shape and the main lights and lenses are in good condition. Both front indicators have cracks, the nearside driving light may have had water ingress and the boot lid panel finisher has a crack.

The trim is complete and well mounted. Both passenger door frame trim show signs of age but the door and glass rubber seals all look good, with just a little perishing noted on the driver-side door well. The driver's door side trim has a scuff and the driver's door mirror outer casing is missing. There are marks on the boot spoiler.

The bumpers are flush to the body but both will need a refurbishment, the offside rear corner of the bumper has a mark.

Interior

The Interior has been well cared for and has little wear or tear.

Seats and Carpets

The interior is smartly presented, with the seats free of heavy use, showing clean and well-looked-after fabric.

The blue carpets are in good condition, just a couple of marks were noted on the passenger footwell. All were damp-free. It retains its original Williams kickplates.

The boot appears to have been lightly used, with no signs of marks or damage. The parcel shelf is missing.

Dashboard

The dashboard and centre console are in good condition, showing minimal signs of wear or marks. The switchgear and controls look good, and there are no issues with the dials. All are said to function.

The door cards are well-mounted, and both storage pockets show age. The headlining and cabin trim is clean.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is nicely presented, the gear lever is missing its top cap, but the gaiter is in good shape.

Mechanics

Mechanically sound & reliable, the 2.0-litre 145 hp packs an impressive punch too.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine fires up without any trouble, idling smoothly with no undulations. There was a light tapping noise on tick-over but no knocking from the engine. The dashboard warning lights all remained off and there were no excessive fumes from the exhaust. The engine didn’t appear to run hot, after we left it running for 10 minutes.

The engine presentation would benefit cosmetic spruce up but nothing untoward considering the age of the car. The exhaust is in good condition.

The gears all changed with no crunches, the clutch appeared to be working without any problems.

Suspension and Brakes

The rear suspension mounts have deteriorated and will need attention. At low speeds, we didn’t hear any unwanted clunks from the wheels.

The brakes show mild signs of age but are effective in use with no unwanted feedback.

The Drive

The Clio Williams is known for its entertaining characteristics on the B-Roads, with a positive weighted steering feel, torquey engine and well-spaced gear ratios. The handling balance and suspension damping also provide a grippy but comfortable ride.

We had a drive around the locality courtesy of Tracey on behalf of Tristan, in which the car dealt with the combination of speed ramps and urban traffic with no problems. The steering was free of wobbles or noises, and the car pulled well as she worked through the gears. There were no unwanted noises heard from the engine, and the engine temperature and oil pressure remained stable. It brakes without issue, slowing the car down in a straight line.

Electrics and Other

The car is completely standard with its original specification.

History and Paperwork

Registered in March 1995, the car was bought in 1997 and has remained in the family ever since. An older V5 under Tristan's brother's name shows that the ownership was transferred earlier this year. It has seen mechanical maintenance and engine overhaul work in the past, although there are no invoices to back this up.

Tristan has also confirmed that the car is original and not needed major repairs or been involved in an accident. It comes with its partially complete owners wallet, including its Williams supplement and has an MOT to June 2025.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price that the seller will let the car go for. We work with sellers to set realistic reserves in line with market pricing – we don’t take on vehicles with unrealistic pricing. Reserve met / not met labeling may or may not be announced during the auction – this is just like a traditional auction house, i.e. bidders may only know when they’ve been successful at the end of the auction.

If the reserve hasn’t been met at the end of the auction then we work with the highest bidder to try to work out a deal with the seller.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
