Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Consigner and Editor

The Clio Renaultsport combines strong performance, precise handling, and a distinct personality.

The 1980s and 1990s are seen as the golden era for hot hatchbacks, with cars that were fast, fun, and agile. While regulations and insurance costs dulled the edge of many models over time, Renault stayed true to its driver-focused roots, continuing the legacy of the original Renault 5 GT. The 2009 Clio 200 Cup wasn’t just a hatchback with ~200BHP from its 2.0-litre engine—it was a finely-tuned machine. Its chassis, suspension, and steering were all designed to handle the power and offer balanced performance. Visually, it stood out with the optional cup pack and distinctive fittings. Together, these elements made the Clio 200 Cup a thrilling pocket rocket that could hold its own against supercars on a winding B-road. Despite its high performance, it also offered great value with manageable maintenance costs, making it a smart choice with investment potential.

This 2009 RenaultSport Clio 200 Cup is a rare find, coming to market from ~6 year ownership, finished in the striking pearlescent 'Liquid Yellow' paint with the unique "Anthracite" plastics pack—one of only 165 examples produced in yellow and only a handful sold with the Anthracite pack. The Cup is an upgraded version of the standard 200, featuring stiffer springs, a quicker steering rack, and striking red Brembo calipers. It also comes fully specified with optional extras like keyless entry, air conditioning, cruise control and pearlescent paint.

It also features the factory-fitted yellow spot Recaro seats, adding to its exclusive appeal. The car comes with its original owner’s wallet and booklets, a solid service history (including a recent service in August 2024), two keyless entry cards, and an MOT valid until August 2025. It’s a well-maintained, original example of a true performance icon.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Matt the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The Clio Sport has all the potential to join the ranks of legendary French hot hatches.

Matt has an impressive collection of classic, retro, and modern cars, including several award winners. Drawn to both the aesthetics and dynamics of the Clio, he purchased it in 2019 and has thoroughly enjoyed it, while also being conscientious about its maintenance and appearance.

Now looking to downsize his collection of near ~20, he’s selling the car due to its lack of recent use. Matt will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Resplendent in it is pearlescent 'Liquid Yellow' finish, the exterior presentation is near flawless.

Wheels and Tyres

17” 5-spoke twin-arm alloys look sharp and are all in great condition after a recent refurbishment in 2023.

Fitted with a full set of Toyo Proxes which are known for their performance and grip, the front pair are from 2023 and the rears were fitted in 2019. All look to have even tread as pictured.

Bodywork

The panels look in great condition, with even shut lines and are free of any noticeable damage, apart from a minor scuff on the offside rear corner and slight deformation, but these don't detract from the car's overall positive appearance. The doors open and close with ease, with the original stickers in the door jams still present. The underside of the car is solid with no problems spotted in the engine bay, suspension mounts, boot floor or wheel wells.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The pearlescent "Liquid Yellow" paint is particularly striking with its consistent lustre and free of fade or swirls. The nose has minor signs of road wear and there is the occasional light surface mark. The nearside corner of the rear bumper shows a slight colour mismatch - perhaps a reflection of difference of materials.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The optional privacy glass and windscreen is in great condition with good seals, and the lights are in good shape overall. The headlamp lenses show mild signs of ageing.

The trim is well-preserved and shows signs of careful storage. The desirable Anthracite trim is well mounted and free of significant issues.

Interior

Resisting its years well, the cabin presentation strongly suggests careful ownership.

Seats and Carpets

The "Yellow Spot" Recaro seats are smartly presented, with the driver's seat showing slight bolster wear. Overall, they remain comfortable and keep their shape well.

The carpets and mats are very clean, with no signs of dampness or significant wear. The boot shows evidence of careful and considerate use.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in great order, with the plastics holding up well, and all the fittings, switches, and dials show minimal wear. There's a small scuff near the start-stop button on the centre console, but overall, the cabin exceeds expectations for a car of its age.

The trim is free of major marks, and the headlining and door cards are clean. The car is fitted with the factory-fitted cruise control and speed-limiter options.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and gear lever are clean and finish off the well-kept condition of the interior.

Mechanics

Potent and peaky, the engine delivers with confidence thanks to regular servicing.

Engine and Gearbox

The car starts up instantly without hesitation, and the engine runs smoothly with no unusual noises or vibrations. All ignition lights stay off throughout the visit. The engine idles steadily, with no hiccups, fluctuations or smoke. No fluid leaks were observed on the day. The engine is clean and well-presented, showing signs of regular maintenance.

The six-speed gearbox shifts smoothly and precisely, with no reported issues with the clutch operation. Watch the video to see the car in action on the road.

Suspension and Brakes

The car rides smoothly at urban speeds, with the wheels staying steady and free of thuds or wobbles as it’s driven over speed bumps and rough roads. The cabin is impressively free of squeaks or rattles.

The brakes are responsive, with smooth action and no pulling, fade, or vibrations. The red Brembo calipers are in good visual condition. It was treated to a full set of new pads and rear discs in 2018.

The Drive

The car embodies the tradition of small French cars with agile chassis and lively engines, with the Clio 200 Cup being one of the last models to offer that analogue driving experience before the rise of electronic controls. It's perfectly manageable around town, but the firm suspension hints at the true performance potential hidden beneath.

The Clio’s forgiving nature is complemented by its strong grip and balance. With the quicker steering rack, it corners sharply and confidently, free from play or wobble. The car pulls strongly, offering plenty of controllable power, while the rev-happy engine enhances its traction and handling. Matt has been satisfied with the car's reliability, with no issues reported concerning oil pressure or engine temperature.

Electrics and Other

The car comes with two keyless entry cards, but the spare card isn’t functional - likely due to a card-battery issue. Matt believes the car is completely stock and free of modifications. All electrics are working as far as Matt is aware, however, the air conditioning is weak. The car also retains its original rear glass and all door jam decals.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~6 year ownership, the car has seen regular maintenance, servicing and upkeep which has kept this example in the best possible shape.

First registered in December 2009, the car comes with seven service stamps and invoices dating back to 2011. Most of the spending has been focused on servicing and maintenance. It retains most of its previous MOT certificates and evidence of a water pump and timing belt change at ~64K, rear discs in 2018 and the car was last serviced in August 2024.

It comes with its full owner's wallet and booklets, two keyless entry cards, and has an MOT valid until August 2025.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price that the seller will let the car go for. We work with sellers to set realistic reserves in line with market pricing – we don’t take on vehicles with unrealistic pricing. Reserve met / not met labeling may or may not be announced during the auction – this is just like a traditional auction house, i.e. bidders may only know when they’ve been successful at the end of the auction.

If the reserve hasn’t been met at the end of the auction then we work with the highest bidder to try to work out a deal with the seller.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
