Introduction

Kevin Jacutan
Professional Consigner

These kit cars make for the ideal Sunday drivers car with their lightweight open top sports car format.

The Super Spec was the top of the line model from kit car manufacturer Robin Hood Sports Cars. These cars offered extremely good value for money compared to other similar manufacturers, this was definitely part of the appeal and popularity for these lightweight racers. Compared to other kit cars, the Robin Hood Super Spec came with all new parts as a complete kit, the only refurbished element being the rear axle.

Coming from the original owner, this car was completed back in 2006. It's covered some ~8,300 miles in that time. Equipped with a 2.0L Rover engine, rear axle with LSD, disc brakes all round, Recaro sports seats and finished in an iconic yellow paint and polished metal finish, it's a smart package.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Kevin after meeting Terry the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've loved building and driving this Robin Hood, it's a proper sports car experience.

Terry ordered this kit car from new, and completed the build of his Super Spec back in 2006. He opted for the reliable 2.0L Rover unit that can produce ~145BHP, and opted for the yellow over polished metal look on his car.

Since completion, he's covered some ~8,300 miles, most of that mileage being for long distance touring in to Europe with his wife. We were amazed to hear that they were able to pack for 10 days away in to the Super Spec's diminutive package. Terry will be happy to answer any questions you have on the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

It's that iconic open top roadster format, an instantly recognisable format.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with 15" wheels, simple 5 spoke sports design, and Yokohama tyres all round. The wheels are painted black and present in good condition all round, just some minor marks.

Bodywork

Finished in a mix of painted and polished metal, the bodywork on these cars are designed with simplicity in mind.

There's not much to observe in terms of panel gaps, all look to fit the car well. With regards any signs of corrosion, nothing was spotted in the pictures, the underneath looking free from any surface corrosion too.

Paint

Finished in yellow and polished metalwork, it's an iconic colour scheme. The paint looks good, even in colour across the painted panels. You'll notice some light swirling in some of the shots, this being a car that likely is wearing its original paint.

Glass and Trim

All looking good on this car, we like the polished metal trim that has been applied to the rear half of the car, it looks good and serves as some extra protection too.

The car proudly wears some Pistonheads livery on the bonnet too, a nice little touch.

The car comes with a soft roof, and also side windows too as pictured.

Interior

I guess you could call it an interior, but really being exposed to the elements is what the experience is all about.

Seats and Carpets

Fitted with sports seats, the spec sheet indicated they are Recaro "Jazz", they're finished in a retro patterned cloth, there's a distinct 90s vibe to them. They present in good condition, and sports seat belts in a contrasting yellow are installed. Take a look through the pictures for the detail.

Dashboard

Simplicity is the key with a sports car like this, and Terry opted for black backed with white markers for the speedo and rev counter. Some additional digital displays have been installed too. The dashboard presents in good condition, with it being an OTS format, there's some ageing present.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The sports car experience is the focus in this, and so a flat bottomed sports steering wheel from OMP is installed. It's wrapped in Alcantara and has the centre marking in yellow for visual aid, the wheel presents in good condition in line with the use.

A simple metal gear stick is present, wrapped in a yellow gaiter that shows signs of ageing.

Mechanics

Fitted with a Rover heart, they're known to push out ~145BHP, more than enough for this light roadster.

Engine and Gearbox

Terry opted for the light, reliable and simple to maintain 2.0L DOHC engine on his Super Spec. These engines are known to push out ~145BHP, when you consider how light the car is, we think you'll agree that's more than enough.

The power is delivered through a 5 speed Ford MT75 gearbox. Watch the video to see the engine fire in to life.

Suspension and Brakes

Four wheel independent suspension on this Robin Hood. When it came to the brakes, Terry opted for disc brakes all round so this car can stop as fast as it goes. Take a look at the photos to see further detail.

The Drive

This open top sports car is all about the driving. Positioned with a super low centre of gravity, the sense of speed in this car is further increased along with being exposed to the elements. These cars feel fast.

Electrics and Other

A complete wiring loom is supplied with these cars, along with other essentials like the ECU, sensors relays etc, equipment that can be maintained in the same way as Rovers were.

Terry reports that all the electrics on the car work as they should do to his knowledge.

History and Paperwork

Built by Terry, these enthusiast cars are an absolute blast, they are the perfect Sunday drivers car.

Terry is the original owner of this Robin Hood Super Spec. He ordered and built the car, completing the build and getting the car registered in 2006. Being a Robin Hood Super Spec, the kit came as a complete package, with all new parts. Just the rear axle, which in this example has a LSD, was a refurbished item.

Along with the order sheets and manuals etc from Robin Hood Sports Cars, there are a whole host of MOT's too, the most recent one completed in February.

We've actioned checks on; Seller ID, V5C, HPi.

The tyres have been filled some water based puncture stuff! And as a result although a spare wheel is included in the sale I have not carried one with me for years.

Thank you for the reply. Just one other thing, if spare wheel is included, where does it go on the vehicle?
Does it fit on the rear panel and are there fittings for it?
Thank you.

The car has. Even modified since I last carried a spare wheel but it would be possible to carry it on the rear panel and bumper but you would need to drill some holes.

Fyi the spare wheel has not been powder coated black like the wheel on the car so is in the original silver.

Mike
There are 2 hoods one which I have used is the “Surrey” type which attaches to the windscreen and the roll bar, but included in the sale is the full wet weather kit supplied by the manufacturer although you would need to make some “L” brackets as I couldn’t find them when I was pulling all the bits and pieces together.
