Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

Refined and comfortable, the Rolls-Royce Twenty has to be considered one of the finest prewar cars available, 100 years of history.

The Rolls-Royce Twenty (or 20 hp) was the company’s acceptance that buyers were keen to drive their cars themselves, rather than insisting on being chauffeured everywhere. Rolls-Royce's famous engineering development, which set the highest standards of the day proved that the ‘baby’ Rolls retained its attributes of reliability and quality. Powered by the 3.1-litre straight-six with a detachable cylinder head and overhead valves, it provided the company with a robust engine template that continued to serve the company well into the 1950s. As part of the company's two-model policy, the Twenty, despite its ‘lesser’ status of a smaller horsepower disclosure was capable of cruising at a respectable speed and could actually outpace the better-known Silver Ghost. Proving to be far more suitable for daily driving, almost 3,000 were built, which did much to help Rolls Royce survive the turbulent interwar years.

Manufactured in 1923, the car was ordered as a running chassis from the Derby factory to an Australian customer and spent the subsequent 90 years out there. The car is believed to have been originally bodied as a tourer fitted with a removable hardtop and was rebuilt as a saloon tourer as part of its restoration in the 1980s. Imported into the UK in 2013, a further overhaul was carried out by a reputable specialist and was taken on by its current owner in 2018. It comes with a handbook, as well as several publications of interest.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Shaun the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

It's been to Spain and back!

Shaun bought the car on a bit of a whim around 5 years ago, and has used it on a regular basis which also included a trip to Spain. Owning a car of this nature obviously needs proper and regular maintenance, which Shaun has clearly been capable of.

In return, he is rewarded with a comfortable, quiet and remarkably reliable machine that has people stopping in their tracks. As an owner of another classic, he has decided to let this one go to free up space.

Exterior

A custom body was built as part of its 1990s restoration, the Tourer is a sought after variant of the 20HP.

Wheels and Tyres

The black wire wheels are in good shape, with tight spokes and no kerb damage.

The car is fitted with Lucas tyres, they are likely to be over 20 years old but do have plenty of tread. The nearside spare wheel wasn’t attached to the car on the day.

Bodywork

The chassis is in good condition, with no significant signs of age. The underside is solid, with no suggestions of any damp damage to the wooden floor pan. The exterior is in decent order, with a level body shell and well-mounted steel wings. We couldn’t spot anything in terms of damage on the panels, with nothing more than the occasional imperfection on the doors and door wells. They all open and close with ease with good catches.

The engine lids raise and rest with no issues and provide ample access to the engine. The wing beadings are all intact, with excellent running boards that are more than capable of withstanding weight. We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The grey paintwork is evenly applied and has an acceptable lustre. The finish is generally free of damage other than a few minor nicks and marks in places that come with age on a vintage car like this.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windscreen is intact, and the car's brightwork is presentable, with the radiator being in notably sound condition. The trim, door handles and windscreen frame have lasted well, with nothing much more than a little surface tarnishing in places.

The headlamps are in good shape and were demonstrated to work. The car has been fitted with indicators, rear reflectors and brake lights. Both rear light lenses are damaged or missing - but will be a rewarding and straightforward task to repair. The car has an interior-accessible luggage box behind the rear seats as well as an additional pull-out luggage rack at the back of the car.

Interior

Well furnished in leather, the cabin is neatly presented with a comprehensive array of instruments.

Seats and Carpets

The leather bench seats are in good shape, finished in a complimentary grey to the exterior, with no cracks or distracting marks.

The front footwell is covered by a rubber mat, with the rear fitted with a makeshift carpet off-cut. It is also fitted with front lap belts.

Dashboard

The wooden dashboard is neatly finished with no damage. The fascia top and door cards have been lined with the same leather from the seats which helps to finish off a pleasing and tasteful presentation.

The dials are all in good order, all display well and are said to be functional. The Smith clock and inclinometer are fun additions to complement a very comprehensive display of dials.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel has been well preserved, with very little in terms of damage. The engine controls are intact and operate as they should.

The car is fitted with a centrally located gear stick lever, which is also in good shape.

Mechanics

The quality and refinement of the engine has not diminished over its 100 years of running.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine fired up with minimal fuss, with no misfires. It took a little time to catch but once it was running the engine settled to an even smooth idle. The engine is beautifully presented, with plenty of evidence of maintenance. The fuel tank is in good condition, with no odour to it and on the day, the car appeared to be free of fluid leaks. We noticed a little smoke while the engine was on tick-over.

The car has a manual gearbox with three speeds, aside from a long reach to the clutch it ranges through the gears with no issues reported with reverse.

Suspension and Brakes

The car is fitted with semi-elliptic leaf springs all-round, with rear-wheel servo-assisted brakes operating well within the remit of a car of this considerable age. The owner has not reported any issues in terms of the ride.

The Drive

A beguiling and unique experience, the car feels reassuring and surefooted. Once a little speed is gathered, the Rolls-Royce is surprisingly nimble and is capable of keeping up with traffic. The engine is quite flexible, so the need to change gears on a regular basis was pleasingly minimal.

Despite the apparent heft of the car, once it was on the move the steering was manageable and appeared to be free from vibration, with a little expected play from the worm and nut steering. The car, thanks to its impressive ground clearance and skinny tyres could well show a a modern SUV a thing or two about off-road adventures.

Electrics and Other

The canvas hood and side screens are all in decent condition, the roof folds back and raises with no problems and provides a snug fit. The fasteners for the side screens are all in good shape, with some signs of age noted on the plastic screens. The rear plexiglass has a crack.

Other than the fitting of indicators, the car has also the provision of interior speakers and a USB connection but these were not tested.

History and Paperwork

Rich in history, the car has details of its ownership profile throughout the decades, it comes to market from ~5 years in the current ownership.

Rolls Royce documentation states that the car was exported as a running chassis to Australia in 1923, where it remained for an impressive 90 years. It includes a copy of its importation documentation which states the build records as well as details such as the ship name and the dock it left the UK in.

Originally fitted with a Missenden Road Motor Body Works California-top tourer coachwork (with a removable hardtop ) it was delivered to an A.G Chapman in Darlinghurst, Sydney. There is documentation listing subsequent owners throughout the decades, as the car was re-registered across several Australian states. It was subject to a restoration and was also re-bodied using an Alvis tourer saloon coachwork in 1990. After its restoration, it appears in a small article, which suggests it was used on an extensive endurance rally.

Imported into the UK in 2013, there is documentation amounting to almost £3,500 on work on its rear hubs, brakes, lighting and mechanical check by Fiennes Restoration LTD shortly after landing in the UK. The car comes with an interesting selection of paperwork, which includes a copy of the Rolls Royce heritage built date, technical literature and diagrams; sundry paperwork and invoices for the 2013 work. Obviously, the car is tax and MOT-exempt, it has no records of previous MOTs and the V5 will be present in time for the handover to the new owner.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 (A new style is on order and should arrive before the auction end) and also actioned an HPI check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hello Shaun, I’ve only just found this site and really like your Rolls. Before I go to the trouble of registering to bid and getting a green light off my wife, please could you give me a realistic guess of what you think it might go for. Thanks. Phil

Hi Phil,

We work with sellers on pricing, and normally look at auction sale results, like this; https://www.glenmarch.com/cars/results?make=315&model=2136&auction_house_id=&auction_location=UK&year_start=&year_end=&low_price=&high_price=&auction_id=&fromDate=01%2F10%2F2018&toDate=&keywords=tourer&only_online=0&show_unsold_cars=0

We do not disclose the reserve price, our view is that the seller has agreed a keen reserve based on the results you’ll see listed.

Hope that helps, the best thing to do is bid what you’d be happy to pay for the car after making your assessment.

Best,

Kulraj – Trade Classics
