Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

The epitome of British luxury, the Rolls-Royce carries itself with style and grace.

Originally launched in 1965, the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow became the cornerstone of the brand for the next ~30 years. Noted for its use of a unitary body and chassis construction, the Silver Shadow retained the build quality, comfort, and prestige of the brand, all within an attractive, modern, and immensely appealing package. Considered a revolution for the brand, it helped the prestigious company appeal to a new demographic and, in the process, became their best-selling model.

This Rolls-Royce has had a great amount of restorative work carried out over the years, with bodywork restoration and respray in the original "Alpine Grey" completed in 2012 costing over ~£7,000. This example comes to market after previously being owned by the chairman of the Midlands Rolls-Royce owners club, all with modest mileage and 1 former keeper. The Silver Shadow is complete with a wealth of service history and paperwork provided, showing this model has been well cared for over its years, and the car is sold with the registration "20EFK" pictured.

This listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting John the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The Silver Shadow is a car like no other, the class, elegance and ride is simply exquisite.

Having owned the car for around one year, John, the current keeper, has truly cherished the Silver Shadow during his ownership telling us "There's just something about the Rolls-Royce that you can't put your finger on, the engineering, quality and road presence is like no other car I've ever owned. It's a fantastic car and one that goes above and beyond".

The Rolls-Royce came to John through an old friend, after his passing. As time has passed, space has become a little tight in the garage and the car is now ready for its next owner, John lets us know, "I would like the Silver Shadow to go to someone who has a passion for these cars and who will really look after the Rolls for many more years to come and give it the love it deserves". Should any questions be required about the car, John would be happy to answer these in the comments section below.

Exterior

With a beautifully presented exterior, the rare Alpine Grey paintwork on this Silver Shadow really stands out from the crowd.

Wheels and Tyres

The Rolls-Royce is fitted with 15" chrome capped wheels which look in great condition, they feature matching body colour sections too. We didn't notice anything to be concerned about on the wheels.

Fitted with Avon tyres, these appear to have a good amount of tread left and we saw no signs of cracking or other concerns with the tyres. The tyres are date coded from 2015. For a more detailed view of the Silver Shadow's exterior and a closer inspection of the wheels and tyres, please refer to the photos and videos.

Bodywork

Looking over the Silver Shadow on our visit, the car maintains well-aligned panel gaps with all doors, bonnet and the boot opening and closing smoothly. We noted no knocks or dings to the bodywork sections when we looked around the exterior, although there was a very minor mark to the passenger side door edge.

We've highlighted our observations in more detail through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take the time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The "Alpine Grey" paintwork has an even finish and colour across all the panels, overall showing in great condition. A lovely finish that changes colour in the light.

In May 2012, the Silver Shadow was resprayed, with some further corrections to the boot-lid and bonnet in August 2012 as detailed in the extensive invoices. There are minor signs of orange peel to the finish on the lower edge sections near the front quarter panels and a slight sign of paint bubbling to the rear nearside bumper, although these observations didn't detract from the overall look of the exterior.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this Silver Shadow looked in great condition, in line with the mileage and age; we didn't notice any cracks, or discolouration to the glass on our visit. The window seals look in great condition too, matching the rest of the car. The front and rear lights looked very well-maintained. Badges and emblems are present and correct and show with a high level of presentation.

Chrome sections also looked great looking over the car and we observed no major issues here. We noted the passenger side door edge trim sat slightly ajar from the body. The Silver Shadow was fitted with a Webasto roof which showed well.

Take a look through the exterior gallery and review video. We take you across all areas of the car as if you were standing there yourself. This way, you can see in greater detail how the car is presented.

Interior

From the sumptuous leather upholstery to the rich wood trim, the Silver Shadow is in a class of its own.

Seats and Carpets

The Rolls-Royce is kitted out with lavish "St James Red" leather hide interior, overall the seats look beautiful especially given its ~54 years on the road. We saw no rips, tears or major issues with the leather. Over in the rear, again the seats and the backs of the front seats show very well. Clear signs the car has been well looked after.

The main carpet of the interior showed in a great condition, looking underneath the mats showed the car had no concerns especially in the rear passenger section. In the boot, this section could benefit from some care and attention, and the red carpet appeared to have been replaced previously as there were several patchy sections. We cover the full cabin area of the Silver Shadow with further detail in our interior review video.

Dashboard

Elegant styling looks great across the dash area of the Silver Shadow. A simple, straightforward setup on this section shows very well for the age of the car and we noticed no scuffs or marks here. The instrument cluster is clean and smart, with all the numbers appearing clear and legible. The odometer displayed ~65,566 miles at the time of our visit.

The dials, switches, and controls all appeared to be in excellent condition, with surfaces appearing free from fogging or scratching. Our interior gallery section offers a closer look at the Rolls' dashboard.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A traditional approach to the steering setup shows a 2-spoke wheel at the hands of the driver. The steering wheel and column changer presentation match the overall high standard of quality and level of care of the interior, again just minor signs of wear on these items. The automatic gear selector shows in great condition.

We've detailed some more images of the cabin area including the steering wheel in our Interior Gallery section - head over to see more shots of what's on offer with the Silver Shadow.

Mechanics

The 6.2L V8 delivered ~300BHP from factory, enough to give a 0-60 time in ~11.0 seconds and a top speed of ~114MPH.

Engine and Gearbox

Starting up the car, we noted no concerns with the engine, and the car idled smoothly. John reports that the engine and gears are very smooth. The Silver Shadow has an electronic ignition installed on the car which gave us no issues when we first started the car up.

Take a look at the mechanical video also, for a closer look underneath the Rolls-Royce and an overview of the engine bay, and to hear and see the car in action.

Suspension and Brakes

We noted no knocks, bangs, or issues from the suspension when we were on the road, and it gave us no concerns in its performance or handling. The brakes felt great and were easily able to bring the Silver Shadow to a stop.

We cover the underside of the car in our 'Mechanical Gallery' section. Head over to our video section, where we've summarised our visit in more detail for you to view for yourself. We take you around the mechanical elements of the car and give you an overview of what's on offer here.

The Drive

We took the car out on some local roads with the John, to get a better feel for what this vehicle is all about. During the drive, we went through the motions, shifting through the automatic gearbox, and seeing how the car performs.

Overall, a very smooth drive out in the Rolls-Royce. The quiet engine runs very nicely out on the road, while the suspension ensures an enjoyable and comfortable ride.

Electrics and Other

The Rolls-Royce is supplied with a rear view mirror which wasn't installed during our visit to the car. The car has air conditioning although we were unable to test this on our road review. A period radio is in place on the central dash area, the radio balance and aerial switches were tested and working during our review.

All switches, dials, and gauges appear undamaged and in great condition. John mentioned that the clock didn't work on the dashboard but believes that everything else should be working correctly to the best of his knowledge.

The registration number pictured "20EFK" is included in the sale.

History and Paperwork

Just 1 former keeper, a chairman of the Midlands Rolls-Royce owners club, and a wealth of history provided, its clear this modest mileage Rolls-Royce has been well cared for over the years.
