Introduction

Alan Stuart
Professional Consigner

A Rolls-Royce with a genuine appeal, the Silver Shadow in restored condition like this are hard to come by.

Originally launched in 1965, the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow was to be the nucleus for the brand for the next 30 years. Noted for its use of a unitary body and chassis construction, the Silver Shadow retained the build quality, comfort and prestige of the brand, in an attractive modern and hugely appealing package. Considered a revolution for the brand, helping the prestigious company to appeal to a new demographic and creating their best selling model in the process.

This example has near-perfect Rolls-Royce service history and retains its original paperwork, and has recently come out of a "back to factory" restoration. The previous owner had the car for some 31 years, the current owner acquiring the vehicle after it had been garaged for 19 years. Specified new with non-standard paint and interior embellishments, the car’s presentation is exceptional and has to be considered one of the best examples of the Series II currently on sale.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Richard the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

It's old-world values in what is actually a useable and practical car, restored to ensure its service continues.

Richard purchased the vehicle from the family of the previous owner, the car had been sitting in a garage unused for some 19 years. Having looked over the car, and seeing the rust free nature of the body from careful maintenance and subsequent storage, he decide to commission a restoration to bring the car back to its former glory.

The car has been painted back in the correct shade of Ivory, with the recommissioning work having been completed by a number of specialists including; Rolls-Royce specialist Nigel Sandell in London, classic car restoration experts D&B Coachworks in Surrey, professional leather restorers and French polishers. This was a car that Richard was intending to keep, hence the major renovation work. However, having had the chance to buy a Corniche drop head coupe, he felt owning two of these vehicles might be a bit much. He'll be happy to answer any questions you might have in the comments section below.

GET YOUR VALUATION

Exterior

The finish and presentation are eye-catching, a beautifully restored example.

Wheels and Tyres

The wheels have been professionally refurbished to a "near mirror" finish. Near new tyres have been fitted prior to purchase which Richard tells us are factory correct Avon Turbosteels with white walls. Plenty of tread on these, 7.5-8mm we've been informed. Take a look at the images to see the condition in detail.

Bodywork

The body is in great shape, part of the reason that Richard decided to restore the car. Having been dry stored, it hasn't suffered corrosion like most examples you'll find. As a result, all panels are said to be original, and the bodywork has been stripped of the old crazed paint and resprayed to the original factory standard.

The shut-lines and panel gaps look great on a car like this. Sills being in very good order have ensured that the bodywork has caused no issues with the restoration.

Paint

The car has been treated to a recent respray, the finish and presentation are to a very high standard. A deep glossy lustre, the car has been painted in the original correct Ivory it left the factory in.

Richard tells us that Rolls-Royce had 4 different shades of Ivory at the time, and when preparing the car for painting they ensured the correct factory order shade was used. The car has the original hand-painted coachlines on the bodywork and wheel trims.

Glass and Trim

The trim on the car is in excellent condition. Many trim items were replaced along with new rubbers fitted where needed, the bumpers were professionally re-chromed and all items detailed before refitting.

In terms of the glass, the only point to note is a small chip in the windscreen, but not in the driver's view. Take a look at the video and photo of the exterior to see all the details.

Interior

A completely refurbished interior; leather re-worked, carpets steam cleaned, trim French polished.

Seats and Carpets

Larger headrests and folding tray tables are featured in this cabin, items that the discerning Rolls-Royce collector will be looking for. This coupled with the Fawn leather headlining make for a very unique and special cabin space.

Some lovely details to the interior, such as the brown piping on the seats. They have been reconnolised and therefore offer a very high standard of presentation, on first glance you'd potentially assume that the car has been re-trimmed. The carpets and overmats are also excellent, with no issues or fraying, professionally steam cleaned and treated.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in very good condition, having been stripped and French polished by Surrey Finishing along with the door cappings.

The fuel gauge wasn't working but a new sender unit has been fitted and is now functioning as it should. There is a cowl missing from the steering column, which will be fitted for the next owner.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and column changer presentation match the overall high standard of quality and level of care of the interior, again just minor signs of wear on these items.

Mechanics

Mechanically sound after restoration with plenty of service history.

Engine and Gearbox

Overall the engine presentation is good, with evidence of careful ownership. As part of the restoration work, the car was serviced and many pipes/hoses etc were replaced. The result is a car in excellent running order. There is a slight tappet noise, probably from one hydraulic tappet, that once filled up with oil disappears. The low coolant light was on on the dash, but the coolant level is good in the car.

The coolant, power steering, brake and gearbox fluids have all been renewed on this car. Gearbox cooler pipes etc were also replaced, Richard wanted to ensure that this car had a practicality to it once completed, cars are for driving after all.

Suspension and Brakes

A major overhaul was commissioned at a cost of some £6,700 with Nigel Sandells. Richard now assures us the car brakes and rides just as it should. The work included new brake pumps, accumulators, valve heads, hard and soft flexi pipes, all supported by the invoice photographed, and now ensuring a sublime ride.

As you'll see from the pictures, most of the bushes and mounts on the car have been replaced so that the ride quality is what you'd expect from a car like this.

The Drive

The Silver Shadow II is renowned for its cossetting ride and decadent comfort, but also has an element of an urge to its performance. Because one travels in almost near-silence, any issues regarding the mechanical hardiness become more evident.

Electrics and Other

All of the electrical items are said to be fully operational. The boot catch may need an adjustment, as it only functions with the key in place.

History and Paperwork

The maintenance schedules on this example is water-tight, and an excellent restoration makes it quite the catch.

The car comes with its original specification order list, as well as all of its driver's handbooks. There is also a document that covers the cars pre-check history to correct any inspection issues prior to dispatch to the owner. Originally registered by P.J Evans in Birmingham, the car has seen 8 keepers, but all have maintained its service history with Rolls-Royce agents.

Recently restored back to its original Ivory colour, and extensive work to the mechanics including the brakes and suspension. The restoration came at a cost of ~£16,000 which Richard project managed with various experts in their respective areas. The car comes with an MOT to February 2022, something Richard put in place even though the car is correctly registered as Historic and does not require the annual MOT.

Fitted with options that a Rolls-Royce collector will be looking for, this car comes with; rear fold down tray tables and large headrests in the interior, and items like the headlight washers and C pillar motifs on the exterior, make for a very unique Silver Shadow II. The car comes with its original books, and two sets of keys too.

We've actioned checks on; Seller ID, V5C, HPi.

Hello Richard, two questions if I may. Firstly, what is the oil consumption – if any? Secondly, may I view the csr on site? Thank you. Charles B Telfer

Hi there, I have done very few miles in the car since ownership, probably less than 50. The oil level remains the same.as when it came back from service and it doesn’t show blue smoke at any time.

Re viewing you are most welcome. Please contact Trade Classics and they will arrange for you.

Hope to see you soon.
