Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

The Ronart W152 is a high performance, hand built, two-seater sports car - it has a unique look with the styling taken from the Grand Prix cars of the 1950’s.

Ronart Cars was founded in 1984 by Rona and Arthur Wolstenholme, which is where the company name came from, "Ron Art". They launched their first design at the 1985 International Classic Car Show, with production commencing the following year. The first car launched was the W152, which was inspired by the front engine Grand Prix cars of the 1950’s.

It was designed to use the readily available and easy to maintain Jaguar power plants and running gear. The W152 is a hand made two-seater with a separate body to chassis, resulting in no stress going through the fibreglass body. The chassis was designed by Spyder Engineering, who also made chassis for Lotus in previous years. The body is in sections, allowing you to access areas of the car without removing the whole tub. Safety also played a big part in the design of the W152. The centre section of the car has a high strength safety cage which incorporates a hidden roll bar for added protection.

Built and owned since new, there is nothing Peter doesn’t know about this machine, which is always useful when buying a car such as this. That amount of knowledge is something you can’t really put a price on.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Peter the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

My wife and I have enjoyed the Ronart W152 sport immensely for over 20 years - it's taken us on many memorable journeys.

Peter purchased the part built car new in 1998 from the manufacturers Ronart Sport. One option when buying the car was to have it partially assembled and with Peter being quite handy with a spanner, completing the build was an enjoyable experience.

The car was completed and registered in 1999, and since then Peter and his wife have enjoyed meeting all sorts of people who stop and ask questions about the Ronart. Usually when filling up with fuel it draws a crowd, and of course Peter is more than happy to answer any questions. One journey saw them take off to Europe for 3 weeks for the ultimate motoring experience.

Peter's wife broke her shoulder which has made it difficult getting in and out of the Ronart, and this is one of the reasons for the sale. The other is Peter would love for someone else to enjoy making some fantastic memories, like he has. Peter will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments below.

Exterior

Originally finished in a gel coat - Peter has now had the Ronart painted in this striking metallic blue.

Wheels and Tyres

What a perfect choice of wheel for the Ronart - Jaguar E type spoked wheels finish it off a treat. There is some very slight tarnishing between the spokes, but they are very well presented and look to be free from any damage.

The tyres have recently been replaced at the front, with the rears approximately 50% worn. Please see more images of the wheels in the exterior gallery.

Bodywork

Walking around the W152 takes you back to the styling of the 1950’s front engine Grand Prix cars and you can't fail to notice those six exhaust pipes that flow nicely out of the engine bay.

With its unique design, the vehicle body is constructed from fibreglass and shows no signs of any cracks or crazing that we could see. The bonnet aligns as it should, locking into place via two key locks, and the same for the boot lid, which isn’t the biggest but does open up to a cavern of a storage area.

Please take the time to look through the hi-resolution images we have taken for a more detailed look at the exterior.

Paint

When Peter got the car it was ordered with a gel coat finish. Around 3 years ago he decided the car needed a freshen up, and it was sent to a local specialist to give the Ronart a fresh coat of the metallic blue you see here.

There are an odd couple of age related stone chips and light scuffs here and there, as you would expect, and some of them should polish out.

The images taken are from various angles and reflections to show off the wonderful Ronart Sport at its best, as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. Please take the time to fully assess the condition of the exterior.

Glass and Trim

There’s not really much in the way of glass other than some Brooklands aero screens that offer some protection, it just depends how tall you are. A hat is definitely recommended, as I found out on our on the road video - at 5 degrees your head gets pretty cold!

The lights appear in good order to the front and rear, other than an odd bit of chrome that has come off on the headlight bezel. The mirrors and window frames are all well presented.

Interior

Simple but effective, the interior has all the important bits - oil pressure, rev counter, water temperature, all within a glance of the eye.

Seats and Carpets

The grey leather interior is in very good condition with no real wear to the seats other than some light creasing. Holding you in place are some Willans 4 point harnesses.

The leather continues over the centre console and side panels, before changing to carpet for the floor, which is in good condition.

The boot has a small opening but if packed correctly, (soft bags), the storage area in the Ronart is massive, as the couple found out on their 3 week European adventure. There is also a storage compartment in the bubble behind the driver's head.

Dashboard

The dashboard is finished with satin brushed circles to give a non reflective finish. Mounted there are the rev counter and oil pressure, directly in front of you, with the water, ammeter, fuel and speedometer to the left, with the odometer showing ~32,499 miles.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The handmade custom wood rim steering wheel is in good order and just nicely worn in.

The gear knob is aluminium with no real wear to it, or the leather gear surround.

Mechanics

A Jaguar 4.2 litre straight-six with a manual gearbox powers this lightweight, nimble and unique sports car.

Engine and Gearbox

The straight-six engine inside the stunning vehicle is of a 4.2L displacement, originally sourced from a Jaguar, Peter refurbished the engine when he got it. He also upgraded it to have a larger capacity sump and a geared starter motor.

With the turn of a key and the flick of a switch the straight-six barks into life and sounds absolutely fantastic through the stainless steel exhaust, with just 1 silencer on each bank of 3 cylinders.

Coupled to a 4-speed plus overdrive with a limited slip differential, Peter reports the change to be smooth and precise and as you can imagine the car pulls extremely well through the gears.

Suspension and Brakes

Using Jaguar XJ independent rear suspension (IRS), with coilover dampers as opposed to the conventional damper and spring setup, the coilovers allow for fine tuning should you need to alter anything.

Fitted with twin servo brakes and a brake balancer for fine adjustment if needed, the vehicle comes to a halt quickly and safely. The brakes have been recently overhauled with the replacement of all four callipers, ensuring everything is as it should be.

The Drive

Breathtaking! What fun this car is to own and drive. The ride is firm without being too crashy over uneven ground, and that sound! The 4.2 litre exiting through the stainless steel exhaust is simply fantastic, and we don’t think there will ever be any petrolhead to disagree.

The 4.2 litre straight-six has plenty of power in the lightweight body. The tweaked Jaguar running gear makes it a pleasure to drive, as Peter has experienced for the ~32,499 miles he’s covered in it from new.

Electrics and Other

There is not much in the way of entertainment, not that you need any with that exhaust note singing in your ear. The switches and gauges that are fitted, Peter reports, are working as they should.

History and Paperwork

With a collection of manuals for Jaguars and the original workshop manual - there is plenty of reading to familiarise yourself with the Ronart W152 Sport.

The vehicle has had regular MOTs all of its life, with the current one valid until the 2nd June 2022, Peter has said he will put the car through a fresh MOT for the winning bidder.

Peter never really envisaged selling the car and so has never been one for keeping receipts when he has purchased parts for the car, although it has been regularly serviced and maintained by a true enthusiast who knows the car inside out.

There is the original sales brochure and as mentioned, various workshop manuals. The registration number allocated to the car, WOW 794, will be removed prior to the sale.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned an HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
