Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

The most luxurious and comfortable ride Rover has to offer, in the desirable coupe format.

The Rover P5 was produced by Rover from 1958 until 1973, the final version of the P5 is the P5B which appeared in 1967, now powered by a 3.5L V8, the B standing for Buick, the engine's originator. The car also featured a Warner Type-35 automatic transmission, hydrosteer variable-ratio power steering, and Lucas fog lights as standard.

This example is coming out long term ownership, some 35 years. Over that time the car has only covered ~7,000 miles, and it has been restored in its original colour with the addition of a white roof. On top of the visual appeal, this example has fully rebuilt and uprated 3.9L engine installed, something very special indeed.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Bob the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

35 years of ownership, this Rover P5B Coupe is always a pleasure to drive.

After meeting Bob, you quickly understand how much this car means to him. He has carried out extensive work and maintenance to keep it in the condition you see today. The car's engine came from RPi Engineering in Norfolk who also rebuilt and uprated many parts, friends of Bob and specialists in Rover engines.

Over his long 35 years of ownership, he's only covered approx ~7,000 miles of leisure use. The Rover also took part in a Devon's Brach Rally in June 2017.

Due to moving house, and no longer having space to keep the car, Bob, unfortunately, is having to part with his beloved P5B. He'll be sad to see it go, but will enjoy sending it off to a good home.

Exterior

A striking four-light array and chrome Rostyle wheels set the P5B coupe apart.

Wheels and Tyres

Rostyle wheels with black inserts were an upgrade for the Rover P5B Coupe, and look great on this example. When we got really close to the wheels we notice some very slight signs of age.

The rear tyres are Federal Super Steel 657's, and the front are fitted with Kumho Powerstar 758's, the rubber appears in good condition but is starting to show slight signs of age in the forms of wear and cracks.

Please take a look at the bodywork in the photos and videos for a closer view of the wheels and tyres.

Bodywork

The bodywork looks very straight on this Rover P5 B example, all the panel gaps look good for a car from the 60s.

When restoring the car, Bob opted to keep the original panels rather than some spares he had acquired. Please take a look at the photos for a closer look at the exterior of this car.

Paint

Finished in a very attractive grey, when combined with its chrome trim, pinstripe, and white roof, the P5B coupe looks excellent.

The finish of the paint is good and even in coverage around the car, we did notice some very small white spots on the bonnet and boot, the car would benefit from detail to really bring the paintwork out.

Glass and Trim

The glass is very good throughout with no chips, cracks or damage noted.

The chrome trim looks very good around the car along with the rubber seals. The only area we noticed was around the rear window where there seems to be an adhesive that has left some marks/texture around the edges of the chrome trim.

Interior

The most luxurious way to travel, The Rover P5B makes any lengthy journey a pleasure.

Seats and Carpets

Full leather tan seats offer you the uppermost comfort on your journey. The addition of armrests in the front and rear, along with a wooden flip-out tray tables really offer some luxurious touches.

The seats appear in very good condition and in line with the mileage of this car, the leather appears to have no rips or significant damage, just some signs of creasing on the bolsters.

The carpets and door cards tell a similar story, clean and they appear free from significant wear. Bob has fitted rubber mats to protect the light coloured carpets.

Dashboard

An elegant dashboard greets you as you step inside the P5B, various switches, dials, and buttons offer the driver all the information and control they'd ever need.

The dashboard appears in good condition free from damage, and in line with the age and mileage of the car.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and automatic gear selector appear in original condition and look free from any major wear.

Please view the images and videos for a tour of the interior.

Mechanics

A fully rebuilt and uprated V8 bored out to 3.9L whisks this attractive four-door coupe along with speed.

Engine and Gearbox

When it comes to Rover engines, it seems like RPi Engineering are the people to see, and that's exactly what Rob did when he decided on a fully rebuilt 3.9L short engine (engine number RPISH9-91015) with a complete Weber carb kit. The engine work was completed in October 2015, coming to a total of £3,350, full details of the engine rebuild and upgrade can be found in the history and paperwork section.

We filmed a cold start video in the garage, as the car had been sitting cold for an entire day. Bob attempted to start the car twice, and once priming the carbs, the car kicked into life. There was some light water vapor from the exhaust on the start-up.

Bob reports a smooth running engine with no known issuses, we followed Rob when traveling to a photo location and watched the car as it went through gears at different speeds.

Suspension and Brakes

The components and running gear have always been given the attention they deserve throughout its life.

Bob reports no issues with the condition of the suspension or brakes and mentions they offer a smooth ride. He replaced some items as part of the restoration as you'll see in the invoice section.

The Drive

The drive is what the Rover P5B is all about, a smooth, luxurious and comfortable journey, which doesn't disappoint. Bob reports a great drive in this Rover, with all the power you'd ever need from this classic.

Electrics and Other

Great to see the original radio fitted in this P5B. Rob reports all the electrics, buttons, and knobs work within the car to his knowledge. He will be more than happy to answer any of your questions in the comments below.

History and Paperwork

A file case bursting full of service history and receipts come with this special and lively P5B Coupe.

The car comes with a bulky case with lots of history. We captured all the receipts, MOT's and work carried out in the photos below.

The car has had an extensive engine rebuild carried out, along with cosmetic restoration to bring it up to the condition you see today. Bob reports the headlining is all original, and unaltered along with many other parts of the car.
