Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

Rover created a wonderful luxurious saloon - which could rival some of the best in its day.

The Rover P5 was produced by Rover from 1958 until 1973; the final version of the P5 is the P5B which appeared in 1967, now powered by a 3.5L V8, the B standing for Buick, the engine's originator. The car also featured a Warner Type-35 automatic transmission, hydrosteer variable-ratio power steering, and Lucas fog lights as standard.

This example has been with our vendor Nigel for just over a year; he was attracted to the car due to its originality / unrestored state and had the intention to bring it up a few levels - however, due to a shortage of space the car needs to find a new home and someone to take over the project.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Nigel the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Rovers have been a big part of Nigel’s life, even getting his friends hooked on them.

Nigel has enjoyed taking the P5B to a few local classic car shows and carrying out some maintenance and general tinkering with the 1970 classic.

Unfortunately, with a house move on the cards and already owning another classic Rover, there will not be enough storage at the new property.

Please feel free to ask Nigel any questions in the comments below.

Exterior

The styling of the P5B screams elegance and class with its smooth-flowing lines.

Wheels and Tyres

The Rostyle wheels with black inserts and Rover centre caps have been refurbished at some point and are in very good condition.

The Federal tyres are all matching, with plenty of tread.

Please see the image gallery to take a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

Nigel tells us the Rover has never been fully restored, however, as you can see in the images and videos it has had some small amounts of work done to try to keep the rust away.

Key areas to address are wheel arches, sills and wings that show visible signs of corrosion.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves, and how much work is likely to be required.

Paint

Finished in Burnt Grey, the paintwork does need some attention, as you can see in the images and videos - you can see some parts have been repainted in the past.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windows are in very good condition, with no chips or cracks and noticeable scratches to point out.

There is some perishing to the window seals, mainly the windscreen, but the chrome trims have a bright finish with no real tarnishing.

The bumpers were re-chromed in 2016, and these are still in very good condition with a nice tarnish-free finish.

Interior

Sprung leather seats offer the utmost comfort for this '70s classic.

Seats and Carpets

Finished in beige leather, the sprung seats in the Rover are comfortable but of course do have some wear and would benefit from some restorative work.

The carpets appear in good condition; the driver’s side has some extra mats fitted.

Inside the boot is a rubber floor mat, and the Jack and wheel brace are mounted to the side. Lifting the mat shows a clean boot floor with no areas for concern. The spare wheel is mounted to the underside of the car.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

With a black top dashboard, this is free from any splits or cracks. The fascia is wooden, with just a tiny amount of delamination on the passenger side near the clock; otherwise, it is in very good condition. The lower section dashboard matches the seats and is in good order.

The instruments are working as they should, and the odometer shows a reading of ~58,591 miles, with a good amount of history helping to back it up.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Fitted with the original steering wheel, this is free from any excess wear, and there is just the smallest amount of tarnishing to the chrome centre.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

3.5 litre V8 not only sounds fantastic - but also propels the P5B at a comfortable pace.

Engine and Gearbox

Rover certainly knew how to build engines; the 3.5 litre V8 has stood the test of time and has continued to improve for many years.

The P5B fired up with the first flick of the key and comes to an even idle with a little choke. No untoward noises could be heard from the engine bay, and no oil leaks were spotted when looking around.

When out on the road, the three-speed automatic gearbox slides between gears with no juddering, and no unwanted noises are coming from the transmission.

Suspension and Brakes

Comfort is key, and Rover got it spot on with the P5B. This example benefited from new rear Spax shock absorbers in 2016, and then the fronts were replaced in 2018, also with Spax.

No knocks or bangs are coming from either corner of the Rover, and looking at the joints, everything appears to have been well-greased in the relevant areas.

The Drive

Smooth and comfortable is what Rover set out to achieve with the luxurious P5B, and it doesn’t disappoint. Nigel loves the ride in the Rover and is happy to jump in and take it anywhere. Just how you should feel with any classic.

Electrics and Other

Nigel reports the switchgear to be working correctly; of course there are signs of wear, but it looks in keeping with the age of the vehicle.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

History and Paperwork

A nice selection of invoices shows regular parts purchased without ever having a restoration.

Looking through the paperwork, you can see the Rover has been given the attention needed to keep it in good mechanical order, with parts being replaced as and when required. A service has been carried out within the past 12 months, but the rover hasn’t covered many miles since then.

Your chance to own one of the most luxurious saloons available from Rover in the 1970s - the car is in an original and usable condition and can be taken to the next level or simply enjoyed as it is.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hello Nigel
Can you use this as an everyday car or does it need work to get it roadworthy ?
Kind Regards
