Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

Rovers most luxurious land yacht - the P5B offers class and comfort on any journey.

The Rover P5 was produced by Rover from 1958 until 1973, the final version of the P5 is the P5B which appeared in 1967, now powered by a 3.5L V8, the B standing for Buick, the engine's originator. The car also featured a Warner Type-35 automatic transmission, hydrosteer variable-ratio power steering, and Lucas fog lights as standard.

The car offers 160bhp at 5,200 rpm, thanks to the much larger and lighter aluminium block than its predecessor. The car is a favourite among high-ranking government ministers and served as transport for Edward Heath, James Callaghan, and Margaret Thatcher. Queen Elizabeth II also owns a Green P5B which is on display in Warwickshire.

This example has been well cared for by Richard for the past two years, and over that time he has covered very little mileage.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Richard the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've always dreamed of owning a Rover P5B, it's such a joy to cruise around in and you can understand why it's such a desirable classic.

Richard is a man of many talents, he previously owned a classic car restoration business and now specialises in camper conversions.

Richard always dreamed of adding a Rover P5B to his eclectic collection of motors, and after searching high and low, he came across this lovely example sold by a classic car specialist. The car was finished in Admiralty Blue over Silver Birch and had the Buick V8 that he was searching for.

After 2 years of meticulous ownership, and little use, Richard is deciding to part with the P5B and bring it to auction - he reports a silky smooth drive and mentions the powered steering offers easy maneuvering.

Richard will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments below.

Exterior

The P5B stands as the elegant final iteration with its striking four-light array and chromed Rostyle wheels.

Wheels and Tyres

The P5B was graced with chrome Rostyle wheels with black painted inserts that all look in great condition on this example.

In places, there are the slightest signs of age, and a few of the wheels are missing their Rover center badges.

For the choice of rubber, the front wheels are fitted with General Ameri G4S, and on the rear Vredestein Sprint ST70s. All sets of tyres appear to have a good amount of tread on them.

Bodywork

The bodywork looks very straight on this Rover P5B example, all the panel gaps look good for a car from the '70s.

There are some very slight signs of age present, in the form of cracks on the bonnet, and some very slight scratches on the near side. Please take a look at the detailed photos and videos for a closer look at the body work on this car.

Paint

Finished in a very attractive Admiralty Blue over Silver Birch, when combined with its chrome trim the P5B coupe looks very elegant.

The finish of the paint is good and even in coverage around the car, we did notice some very small areas of scratches - the car would benefit from a deep detail to really bring the paintwork out.

Please take time to view the images and videos to assess the condition for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks in good condition across the car, along with the trim being good too.

All the window rubbers and seals appear tight with no signs of wear or degrading.

The brightwork looks in great condition and in line with the age and mileage.

Interior

The first-class choice of travel, the Rover P5B makes any journey a fine experience.

Seats and Carpets

Full leather seats, offer extreme comfort on any journey distance. The seats appear in good condition in line with the age and mileage of the car, with just some small areas of cracking beginning to show - with a little TLC you could really elevate the seats to a new level.

The carpets and door cards tell a similar story, clean and they appear free from significant wear.

Dashboard

An elegant dashboard is offered in the P5B - it really is a lovely place to be.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look, no cracking or warping of the dash observed - a testament to the car being looked after over the years.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and automatic gear selector appear in original condition and look free from any major wear.

Please view the images and videos for a tour of the interior.

Mechanics

A redevelop and refined lightweight aluminum Buick engine whisps this elegant full-size saloon down any street.

Engine and Gearbox

The P5B was the final iteration of the P5 and packed a punch as it was now powered by the 3,528cc Rover V8 engine also used in the 3500. Rover didn't have the budget to develop a new engine and instead choose to redevelop the Buick V8 in lightweight aluminum making it considerably stronger.

We captured a mechanical video of the P5B, where the car had been sitting cold for a few hours, we asked Richard to turn the key and fire the P5B up, it started the first time without fuss or any issues.

Richard reports a smooth-running engine with no known issues - we followed him when traveling to a photo location and watched the car as it went through gears at different speeds.

Suspension and Brakes

Richard reports no issues with the condition of the suspension or brakes and mentions they offer a smooth ride. The components and running gear have always been given the attention they deserve throughout its life.

The Drive

Smooth and luxurious cruising awaits in P5B ownership.

Richard has really enjoyed pottering about in the Rover P5B, taking it down to the coast during the summer.

Electrics and Other

The car is fitted with a modern Sony MP3 radio/CD player to offer entertainment inside the P5B.

Richard reports all the electrics, buttons, and knobs work within the car to his knowledge.

He will be more than happy to answer any of your questions in the comments below.

History and Paperwork

A favourite among the Royals - Elegant P5B UK, RHD, usable and desirable classic finished in stunning Admiralty Blue over Silver Birch.

The car comes with a folder of a good amount of history in the form of MOT certificates and part receipts.

This is just one of Richards's beloved cars from his collection, he's a meticulous owner and really knows what he's looking for when it comes to P5Bs. Due to lack of use Richard is now downsizing his collection and having to part with his treasured Rover first.

Richard purchased the car on 18.09.2019 and after noticing the DVLA never sent through the new V5, the V5 states the car was acquired this year - Richard has paperwork to back this up.

We've actioned checks on; Seller ID, V5, HPi clear.
