Introduction

Isaac Wass
Professional Consigner

A limited edition classic Mini, the 30th Anniversary edition celebrates three decades of the iconic Rover Mini.

In 1989, Mini celebrated its 30th Birthday with the Mini 30 with a limited run of 3,000 cars. To set it apart from the standard Mini, it was adorned with 30th anniversary badges, half leather seats unique to the Mini 30, and some extra equipment. Some of these special features included an option of Pearlescent Black paintwork, Mini 30 badges, servo assisted front brakes, body-coloured arches, sills, wings, and a boot light.

This particular example comes to us from six years of ownership, and has covered ~71,500 miles over its life. A UK RHD, these Mini's are a collectable example, and this car has had extensive bodywork restoration as well as benefitting from having had the 999cc engine swapped out for the 1,275cc variant.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Isaac after meeting John the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Having owned classic Mini's before, I couldn't resist the opportunity to own this 30th Anniversary Edition.

John has been an avid collector of cars over the years, having owned not only classic Mini's in the past, but also Porsche's and MG's to name a few. When the opportunity came up to purchase this 30th Anniversary Edition Mini John took the dive and bought the car and, realising it suffered from some corrosion, set about replacing all affected panels and having the car repainted.

It's safe to say John has spent a bit of money getting the car to the standard it's at today, however with the car sitting mostly in storage for the large majority of the year, he feels it deserves to be driven and has decided to sell the car so it can be cherished by a new owner. He'll be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

A limited edition collectable Mini, the iconic silhouette is instantly recognisable, distinctive exterior decals along with the stunning pearlescent black paintwork certainly make it stand out from the crowd.

Wheels and Tyres

The Mini 30 was fitted with 12” Minilite alloy wheels. These original wheels present in good condition after having been refurbished during John's ownership and show no signs of curb damage or corrosion.

The wheels are wearing Falken 69S tyres on all four corners and these are dated 2016, all four appear in good condition with lots of tread left too.

Bodywork

The bodywork of this limited edition 30 looks to be in excellent condition, with all the panel gaps around the car looking to align very well. During his ownership John has carried out extensive bodywork, replacing the following panels with heritage items; front panels, doors, bonnet, scuttle panel, front and rear seam finishers, boot lid, rear valance, front and rear bumpers, a rear wheel arch repair panel, and new door latches.

The end result is some very nicely finished bodywork that isn't really distinguishable from the original bodywork.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The options of paint for the Mini 30 were "Cherry Red" or "Pearlescent Black", with only ~1,000 black models ever manufactured. The car has been painted following the extensive bodywork carried out by John, and so the paintwork is in great condition and has been carried out to a very high standard.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this example looks to be in good condition, we didn't notice any chips, cracks, or visible scratches during our visit. John has replaced all the window and door seals with new items, so no worries there.

Being a limited edition it received a special Mini 30 crest and decals on rear quarters, boot, and bonnet along with twin red/yellow pin stripes along the length of the car. The chrome bumpers, grille, door, boot handles, and window surrounds all look in good condition with no noticeable signs of pitting.

Interior

The half leather seats with red piping and red steering wheel are a special feature of the 30 over standard cars.

Seats and Carpets

Unique to the 30, this Mini is fitted with black half leather seats with red piping, tagged with the 30th Anniversary logo. Keeping in line with the rest of the car the interior is in great condition, with little more than an age related patina to the leather.

The black leather trimmed door cards and red carpets all present in great condition with no issues worth noting. The car has fitted carpet floor mats in black with red piping and these are in good condition too.

Dashboard

This example has no signs of any major damage or scuffs. With no warning lights displayed, the odometer is showing a reading of ~71,500 miles. The dash has a black-plastic finish, which is in great condition, including the centre console.

While John wanted to keep the interior completely original, he has retrofitted a 12V socket for charging mobile devices or plugging in a Sat-Nav unit.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The red leather steering wheel with Mini 30 crest is the eye catching centrepiece of this interior, again wanting to keep the interior in its original condition John was reluctant to do any work to it, however he did decide to have the steering wheel re-trimmed in red leather like it original would have run off the production line.

Both the gear stick and steering wheel present in great condition overall and live up to the overall fantastic condition of this example.

Mechanics

A fun car to drive, this example has been upgraded to a 1,275cc engine, giving it more day to day usability.

Engine and Gearbox

The car has been fitted with the 1,275cc four-cylinder engine mated to the original 4-speed gearbox. The V5 has been updated to reflect this and John reports a smooth and fun driving experience in the Mini 30. Other work completed includes new clutch master cylinder, new windscreen wiper motor and washer bottle, as well as a new water pump.

During our "On The Road" video you can see the car starting from cold, driving around town, as well as taking a look at the very clean underside. When starting from cold the engine did not hesitate in the slightest, starting on the first turn of the key and idling smoothly straight away.

Suspension and Brakes

John has converted the Mini to coil spring suspension with new shock absorbers all round, this gives the mini comfortable yet tight suspension capable of handling nicely in the corners.

The Mini 30 was also fitted with servo-assisted front brakes and drums at the rear from factory and John has refreshed the brakes all round with new discs, callipers, dust shields, brake hoses and brake assemblies as well as upgrading the rear brakes to Mini fin brake drums.

The Drive

The Classic Mini is always a fun car to drive, with its low position on the road, a wheel on each corner, and head turning character, it's very hard not to enjoy driving. The Mini 30 only doubles down on that fun factor by providing additional benefits such as the servo assisted front brakes, comfortable and unique interior, and the crowd stopping good looks of the pristine black paintwork.

Electrics and Other

The electrical systems on the car are all fully functioning, including the retro fitted 12V socket. The car has been fitted with an aftermarket classic stereo system in keeping with the feel of the car, however this is a basic unit and John says the performance is somewhat unreliable.

History and Paperwork

1 of ~1,000 finished in Pearlescent Black, this limited edition Mini 30 makes for a very attractive and collectible British Classic.

1 of ~3,000 produced and 1 of ~1,000 finished in black, this 30th Anniversary Mini with ~71,500 miles on the clock is coming out of six years of ownership with John, he has thoroughly enjoyed using and restoring the car.

The car has just had an MOT which it passed with flying colours, this expires on 15.12.2023 giving the new owner 12 months without having to worry about having an MOT. Included in our paperwork gallery are many invoices for parts, work carried out, and most importantly the heritage panels John used during his restoration.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi John, very nice looking car it looks like the underside has had waxoyl or similar applied, can you confirm this. Also is there any rust on the underside at all, it looks very clean from the video. I do hope this is with my budget as have been looking for something in this condition for some time, cheers Andy
