Introduction

Isaac Wass
Professional Consigner

One of the last original shape Minis, the Cooper Sport - with this example being collector grade having just one owner from new.

Originally released in 1959, the Mini soon became the market leader in small car design, utilising its front wheel drive and transverse engine to maximise interior cabin space in a way that had not been seen before. Due to the immense popularity of the Sports Pack - an option on 1997-2000 Minis - Rover decided to release a standalone model with it fitted as standard. The Cooper Sport was born, and became the flagship of the Mini range.

This Tahiti Blue example features the Platinum Silver bonnet stripes and roof, replacing the traditional Old English White of the previous model years, the walnut dashboard was replaced by an alloy version, along with the “Alloy Interior Pack” - consisting of window winders, door pulls and door handles - now fitted as standard. Finally the “Cooper” wheel badges of previous model years were replaced with Green “Mini” badges to round off the final additions to the last model year to be produced.

Coming from a full 22 years of ownership by current owner Christopher, this Rover Mini Cooper Sport has only seen ~30,600 miles since new.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Isaac after meeting Christopher the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Both my brother and I are Mini enthusiasts through and through, and when we discovered that this would be the last model ever produced, well we saved up the money and purchased it brand new from the Rover dealership.

Having owned four Mini’s in the past, both Chirstopher and his brother Wesley are big Mini fans. Upon learning that Rover were to produce the last of the classic shape Minis they decided to get the money together and purchase the car brand new from the dealership a little over 22 years ago.

Since purchasing the car they have endeavored to maintain it to a high standard, having fitted a stainless steel centre mounted exhaust, and had the bodywork touched up where required to keep the vehicle looking its best over the last two decades.

Sadly the car is now up for sale as medical issues unfortunately mean the car can’t be driven by Christopher, so both he and Wesley want to find the car a loving new home with a fellow classic Mini enthusiast.

Exterior

The Tahiti Blue paintwork is wonderfully offset against the Platinum Silver roof and “John Cooper” bonnet stripes. Combined with the 13” sport style wheels and rally inspired quad grill lights, the Rover Mini Cooper Sport is a timeless example of a renowned British classic.

Wheels and Tyres

The 13” sport alloy wheels are in good condition, with no visible curb damage or signs of buckling or repair, the faces are unblemished and suffer from no major signs of corrosion.

The Yokohama tyres are in good condition too, with no signs of damage or ageing to the sidewalls, and a decent amount of tread left on all four corners.

Bodywork

Overall the exterior bodywork on this classic Mini is in very good condition, with all panel gaps visually lining up as they should, and all panels appearing to be straight and true. Also, and importantly, the usual hot spot areas around the wing joins, skuttle and A pillars look in really good condition.

When speaking with Christopher and Wesley it seems there has been no major bodywork repairs in its life, save the odd touch up to scuffs or scratches obtained throughout the years.

The car passed its recent MOT in June of this year and there were a few advisories around the subframe and NSF corrosion but not impacting structural rigidity (you can look this up on the DVLA site) - based on this feedback and studying the underside video / images the new owner may wish to look at this in the future.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The Tahiti Blue paintwork is both a rich and vibrant blue, definitely standing out in a crowd. Upon viewing the car there are no major scratches, chips, scrapes, or scuffs to be seen, and from what we could tell on the day there is no mismatched paintwork in either colour or texture.

There have been numerous small touch ups done over the years to take care of general wear and tear, however these have all been done to a high standard as we could not spot any of these areas when looking at the car.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass is all in great condition, with no visible chips, cracks, or scratches to the windscreen, side, or rear windows. Surrounding rubber trim is all in fair condition too, not appearing to be damaged or cracked, and the same can be said for the chrome trim on the front and rear of the car too.

Interior

The interior of the Cooper Sport is a surprisingly spacious place to be, thanks to its innovative design every inch of space inside the cabin is used to its fullest capacity, leaving driver and passenger with more room than you’d expect from such a small form factor.

Seats and Carpets

The black and grey leather seats are in good condition, with only the slightest signs of age giving the hide an appropriate patina. There are no major signs of wear or any big scratches, scuffs, or tears to the upholstery.

The black carpets are also in good condition, with no heavy wear in any of the usual spots such as drivers heel pad, and fitted mats present in each footwell.

Dashboard

The alloy dashboard is of standard fitment for the cooper sport, however this was previously an optional extra on previous models. It fits well within the interior, tying in nicely with the exterior Platinum Silver highlights.

The dashboard is in good condition, with no major signs of wear or any scratches, scrapes, or other such defects. The latch on the glovebox is a little loose and so does rattle slightly on idle, however this does not affect the function of the glovebox and it still opens and closes without issue.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The black and grey leather steering wheel matches the seats perfectly and only shows light signs of use, predominantly on the upper right hand side of the wheel where there is a patch of wear as can be seen in our interior gallery.

The aluminium alloy gear knob fits nicely with the rest of the “Alloy Interior” equipment like dashboard, door pulls, handles, and window winders. It appears to be in good condition with no visible damage.

Mechanics

Powered by a 1.3L ‘MPI’ in-line four producing ~63bhp and driven by the front wheels via a four speed manual transmission, this lightweight classic is a blast to drive and with only ~30,600 miles on the clock it’s still in the prime of its life.

Engine and Gearbox

The 1.3L ‘MPI’ (Multi Point Injection) in-line four engine starts and drives very well, on the day of our visit we first filmed the cold start video, during which the car had not been started in over 24 hours. This can be seen during our ‘On The Road’ video, in which you can also see the car being driven on the road. The engine did not seem to struggle for power, nor did it present any taps or knocks during our time with the car.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension is relatively stiff which becomes obvious when taking speed bumps, however overall the suspension handled corners well and provided a moderate level of comfort considering its sportier inclination.

The brakes also seem to have no real issues, with the car coming to a quick and efficient stop without hesitation.

The Drive

With a wheel on each corner and a curb weight of less than 700kg, the Rover Mini Cooper Sport is a bundle of fun to drive. In spite of its minimal ~63hp output the Cooper Sport is capable of accelerating quickly enough to keep up with traffic, and has no difficulties negating country roads or tight bends. This leaves the driver feeling both engaged and exhilarated by the ‘go-kart’-esque experience this classic Mini provides.

Electrics and Other

With only basic electronics to speak of; lights, indicators, stereo etc, we didn’t spot any problematic electronics on the day. The aftermarket stereo fitted works fully along with the Pioneer speaker system fitted to the rear shelf of the vehicle.

History and Paperwork

With one owner since new this car has seen consistent and reliable care throughout its life, providing the car with a rather unique provenance.

Since being purchased on 28.06.2000 Christopher has been the sole owner and driver of the vehicle as well as the sole caretaker for all of its needs.

Unfortunately the bulk of paperwork has been misplaced as a result of recent health issues, however both the V5 and original bill of sale from Wrights Rover Boston are both present for perusal.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
