Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Photographer and Editor

A lightweight roadster combining great looks, fun handling and individuality.

Based on the innovative Smart car, the Roadster-Coupe incarnation was released in 2002. Echoing the styling of a well-received concept car design, the 2-seater roadster was available with a Targa roof and electrical soft-top. Featuring a showcase of innovation, it was powered by a turbocharged 3-cylindered 0.7-litre engine, mated to a single-clutch automated transmission and F1-style paddle shifters. Almost uniquely placed in a market of open-top sports cars, the rear-engined sports car soon captured the public imagination and became a strong seller across Europe.

Brabus-tuned versions like this one became the range toppers, with increased power and plusher fittings and details. This includes modified suspension, twin sports exhausts and unique six-spoke aluminium alloy wheels. An additional limited edition of just 50 RHD models was produced in 2005, known as the Roadster Coupe Racing Edition (RCR). The RCR model pays visual homage to the prototype V6 bi-turbo model, utilising the same Ferrari red colour panels and silver Tridion cell. Fitted with unique black Alcantara and leather seats with red diamond pattern stitching, colour-coded trim, and a numbered plaque, this RCR model also has an SB2 power upgrade kit taking it to ~90BHP. This is a unique opportunity to obtain car number 13 out of 50. It was owned for 19 years by its prior owner and has only ~30,332 miles. Beautifully presented with an MOT to August 2025 it also has two keys.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Danny the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The RCR Roadster is a superb little bundle of fun!

Danny has a knack for finding well-kept and unusual cars and was taken by the low mileage and sheer rarity of the Smart Brabus Roadster.

Appreciating its unique charm and engaging driving experience, he is tempted to keep the car for himself! He will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Finished in Ferrari red, its concept car-like styling is bang-up-to-date.

Wheels and Tyres

The 17” powder coated six-spoke aluminium alloy Monoblock VI 17" wheels are nicely presented with no signs of major damage to note.

It has a set of recently fitted Nankang tyres and therefore offers excellent tread.

Bodywork

The Tridion cell and plastic body panels show no obvious cracks or repairs. The panels are flush to the cell with consistent panel gaps. All doors open and close with ease. The structure of the car appears to be positive, the underside is covered by a tray and is free from significant damage.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The "Ferrari red" finish is evenly consistent with no surface marks or scuffs. The lustre holds up well although the sun does highlight the surface swirls. Some detailing treatments could remedy this we think.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windscreen and side glass are in good condition, although the rear corner windows show lacquer damage. The lights and lenses are in good shape.

The exterior trim displays well, with no outstanding blemishes noted.

Interior

Clean and in great shape, the interior has been cared for by its previous owner.

Seats and Carpets

The unique stitched Alcantara and leather seats are neatly presented, showing minimal signs of age.

The RCR-branded mats and carpets are tidy, with minor age-related wear in the foot wells. All are dry, with no evidence of historic leaks. Both luggage sections have been used carefully.

Dashboard

The dashboard has worn well and the Alcantara and plastic facia look smart. All dials and controls are clean and free of wear, with some minor scuff marks noted on the glove box lid and lower dashboard. The air-con is not operational.

The Alcantara door cards and rear trim are free of marks.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The three-spoke steering wheel, paddle shifts and aluminium gear lever are in excellent order.

Mechanics

Punchy and charismatic, the engine loves to be worked hard, this one pushed out ~90BHP from factory with the SB2 upgrade.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine starts up with no hesitancy, idling smoothly on tick-over. All dashboard warning lights remained in check, as the usual cold-engine exhaust condensation dissipated.

The gearbox is a 6-speed automated manual, with electronic gearshift control via steering wheel-mounted paddles or lever. It's operational in both modes with no reported issues with their functions.

Suspension and Brakes

The Brabus suspension is quite firm but retains a decent level of ride comfort. There were no unwanted noises heard from the wheels.

The car brakes without drama. No squeals or judders were heard during the test drive.

The Drive

The heart of the car is the buzzy 3-cylinder engine, which pulled smoothly with a charismatic "Porsche-like" growl. This helped the car feel faster than we were travelling at, with plenty of agility and grip. The road-holding was compliant, with decent tight steering. No unwanted noises were heard when on full lock or when braking.

The body felt planted on the road, and thanks to the stiff body structure we didn't notice any creaks, however Danny told us the rubber bushes can creak over bumps but this is seemingly normal according to the Smart specialist who worked on the car. Since acquiring the car, Danny has not reported any problems with leaks, oil pressure or engine temperature.

Electrics and Other

Danny told us that all the electrical components apart from the air conditioning was working, to his knowledge. The roof bars are easily removed and replaced, both are in excellent condition. The electric canvas sunroof operated without fault.

History and Paperwork

A rare edition of this sporty roadster, with the previous owner for ~19 years, it comes with the limited edition Brabus RCR package including the all important SB2 power upgrade.

Registered in January 2006, this car was originally supplied by Smart Basingstoke and bought by its last keeper in June 2006. It comes with a couple of early receipts which include a service and software update. There are also MOT certificates going back three years. It has an MOT to August 2025 and comes with three keys.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

This is an auction on behalf of a trade seller and normal auction rules apply, i.e. there is no warranty, no return policy and bids are binding with more info in our terms and conditions.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price that the seller will let the car go for. We work with sellers to set realistic reserves in line with market pricing – we don’t take on vehicles with unrealistic pricing. Reserve met / not met labeling may or may not be announced during the auction – this is just like a traditional auction house, i.e. bidders may only know when they’ve been successful at the end of the auction.

If the reserve hasn’t been met at the end of the auction then we work with the highest bidder to try to work out a deal with the seller.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
