Introduction

Andrew Taylor
Professional Consignor

A thoroughly charming family car, from a time when motoring was just becoming attainable for most. Given those humble origins, this car has spirit, character and potential in abundance.

The Standard 10 was introduced in 1954 as a more upmarket and more powerful version of the Standard 8. At the time the Standard 8 was the cheapest new car in the UK, being a gateway to motoring for thousands of families. The 10 boasted a wider chrome grill, a larger 948cc engine and, in most cases, a boot lid! Given this particular car doesn't have a boot lid despite clearly being a 10, it is thought to be the "Family 10." The Family 10 combined the 8's body with the 10's more powerful engine.

This blue and white beauty has clearly enjoyed a thorough restoration at some point before current ownership. It presents in good condition and has obviously benefited from a respray, new carpets and significant mechanical attention. The car not only starts, runs and stops really well, but both the engine bay and the car's underside present very well indeed. Let's not forget that this is a car that enjoyed its sales heyday over sixty years ago!

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Andrew after meeting Olly the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I'm a big fan of small British saloons of this era, I have another Standard 10 project underway as we speak. They are such a refreshing antidote to the sterile family saloons of today.

Olly is clearly a die-hard petrol head with a number of interesting classics in his collection. He even works in motor sport so it is very much an all consuming passion.

It is due to the number of current projects underway and increasing work commitments that mean Olly is looking for an enthusiastic new owner for his Standard 10. He'll be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

The white painted steel wheels with blue over white colour scheme, help give this family car a decidedly sporting demeanour, and it's none the worse for that.

Wheels and Tyres

The 13 inch painted steel wheels afford this little car a business-like air, aided by the bigger tyres on the rear in classic custom car traditions. The wheels appear to be in good used condition and seem to be quite recently painted.

The rear tyres are a Champiro VP1 brand in a 175/70 size whilst the fronts are Falkens in a 165/70 size. They all appear to have been very lightly used, still retaining plenty of tread.

Bodywork

The bodywork is in great condition and it seems from the condition of the front wheel arches that both front wings have been replaced. No areas of significant dents, dings or rust were noted during our several hours with the car.

Door and bonnet open and close well, and panel gaps appear tight and parallel, considering the age of the car. The images are taken from various angles and reflections showing off the wonderful lines at its best and as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. Please take the time to fully assess the condition of the exterior.

Paint

The car features a striking blue over off-white colour scheme and seems to have enjoyed a recent respray. Whilst not necessarily a top-class paint job it can be considered very serviceable and makes for a smart looking car none the less.

There is the odd small scratch in evidence but nothing to cause any concern to someone who intends to use the car on a regular basis.

Please take your time to look through the hi-resolution images we have taken for a more detailed look at this '50s gem.

Glass and Trim

The glass appears to be original to the car, and this car being the upmarket 10 model, enjoys wind up windows rather than sliding windows. No areas of delamination or fogging were noted during our visit.

Some of the rubber trim around the front and rear screens does exhibit a little cracking and hardening. This appears to be purely cosmetic and no ingress of water was noted or reported.

Interior

The Standard 10 is a great reminder of how a basic interior can still be charming and characterful and surprisingly practical and comfortable, less really is sometimes more!

Seats and Carpets

The original pleated vinyl seats are in good used condition to their faces. A practical finish and surprisingly capacious and comfortable. The rears of the front seats are dressed in a cloth velour which has succumbed to years of passengers' knees being pressed into them. They are both ripped in a number of places and will ultimately need replacing.

The carpet set appears to be new and finished in black. The carpets are glued down over quilted sound-deadening material.

Dashboard

There's not much to the dashboard of the Standard 10, it is fair to say. There is an aftermarket oil pressure gauge fitted to the right of the main binnacle, and Olly reports that it shows a healthy oil pressure under all circumstances.

The basic heater controls and central switches are all original and seem to work as expected. The dash top is painted off-white and presents in good, used condition.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is the original twin-spoke, black Bakelite item and is in good used condition as our photographs show. The gear lever is a long, dog-legged affair with a plastic / Bakelite knob and appears to be original.

Mechanics

It's a story in two parts with the little Standard 10, the engine sounds sweet, smooth and quiet, but a stainless-steel exhaust has a pleasingly sporty burble to it.

Engine and Gearbox

During our visit the car started very eagerly with no unexpected noises or smoke emissions. The car ticked over smoothly and ran sweetly during our test drive. The gearbox does feature a long throw gear-lever and seems to select gears positively.

Olly reports that the car runs very well given its age. He mentions that, on occasion, the warm starting is reluctant due to fuel vaporisation. This is a known feature of this engine and can be easily circumnavigated by allowing the car to cool a little.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension is quite softly sprung and damped which is common for this era of car. This makes for a comfortable ride, and no bangs or crashes from the suspension were noted.

The brakes slow the car effectively and seem to pull it up in a straight line. This can be seen in our "On the road" video.

The Drive

It's such an endearing car to be in and it is hard to write about it without regular recurrence to the word "charming".

That said, these cars had a successful rallying career back in the late 1950's, and it is easy to imagine some modest modifications making this car a fairly sporting proposition too.

Electrics and Other

It will come as no surprise that the electrical systems on the Standard are essentially limited to interior and exterior lights. Needless to say, all electrical systems are reported to work as you would expect.

History and Paperwork

Unfortunately there is no historical paperwork available with the car. Olly will happily answer any questions you may have, however.

We’ve actioned a HPi check on the vehicle - this came back clear.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
