Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Consigner and Editor

The undisputed king of 1990’s rally sport, the Impreza is a genuine automotive icon.

Subaru capitalised on the success of its Impreza models with a series of special and limited-run editions, all engineered to perform at the highest level on world rally stages. Subaru produced approximately 1,425 Impreza WRX STi Version 5 Type R models, which were originally intended exclusively for the Japanese market. However, with higher power figures than the UK equivalent and based on the coveted 2-door body, many of these vehicles were imported into Britain as a more accessible alternative to the pricier 22B.

This particular example is the fifth iteration of the preferred GC8 generation, it's powered by the high-performance ~280bhp EJ207 engine and paired with a close-ratio 5-speed manual transmission. The Version 5 Type R stands out with features like the Driver Controlled Centre Differential (DCCD), which allows the driver to adjust the torque split between the front and rear axles, enhancing its versatility on various surfaces. Other notable features include an intercooler water spray, Limited Slip Differential (LSD), and an aftermarket turbo timer. The car also retains its original carbon strut brace.

Presented in the iconic two-door coupe body with an imposing rear spoiler, this JDM-sourced vehicle was imported into the UK in 2016 and is one of only ~709 examples finished in Pure White. It has undergone a comprehensive body restoration and repaint, alongside significant mechanical attention by a dedicated enthusiast. Over the past nine years in the UK, more than ~£30,000 has been invested in its upkeep, with invoices from renowned rally specialists Roger Clark Motorsport documenting the work carried out. The car has been serviced five times during this period and is offered with a MOT through to July 2025.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Danny the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Smartly presented, the exterior has seen a complete refurbishment in 2021.

Wheels and Tyres

The gold finish on the 17” multi-spoke OZ Racing wheels really help the car stand out, the minor scuff on the near-side rear rim do not detract too much from their overall appeal.

The Toyo Proxes were fitted in 2016 and have plenty of even tread.

Bodywork

The exterior panel work is in impressive condition with no visible damage and a flush fit that supports the 2020 restoration. The doors opening and closing properly with excellent seals is a great indicator of the car's overall condition.

Paint

The white paint has a smooth, glossy finish with an even consistency. While there are a few minor chips, the main one on the bonnet and some paint blemishes on the roof, the overall appearance is still very positive.

The windscreen is in great condition overall, with just a light mark on the passenger side. The lights and lenses are in excellent condition.

The car brakes confidently, free of vibrations or unwanted noises. The full set of red callipers were fitted in 2020. All discs and pads have also been replaced since 2019.

The Drive

Beneath the accolades and the championship trophies lies a car that’s surprisingly easy to drive and highly practical - a true "Jekyll and Hyde" personality. The light steering makes navigating the Impreza an effortless experience, this agile handling adds to the car’s driving appeal. It's precise and smooth, with no signs of knocks or vibrations.

On the road, the car tracks smoothly at normal speeds, offering a docile and composed ride with very little noise or disruption, other than the signature thrum of the boxer engine, which serves as a subtle reminder of the car’s performance-oriented roots. It feels planted on the road, with no loss of composure during cornering or sudden manoeuvres and free of unwanted noises.

A firm prod of the pedal instantly transforms the car as the turbo kicks in, unleashing an immediate surge of power. Despite the impressive acceleration, the car remains completely controllable. Throughout the entire test drive, the oil pressure and engine temperature remained in check.

Electrics and Other

The vehicle has an advisory-free MOT until July 2025, so all essential electrics are assumed working. A turbo timer has been fitted to help look after the turbo health.

Please note that the odometer reading is in km.

History and Paperwork

Much of the ~£30K worth of invoices has been carried out by Roger Clark Motorsport.

Imported directly from Japan in 2016, it comes with a detailed Japanese CAR VX report that verifies its originality and provides insight into the car’s life in Japan. The report confirms a clear accident history and states that the vehicle underwent regular inspections throughout its time in Japan.

The Impreza was placed for auction in Japan in November 2015, with a recorded mileage of 137,831 km at the time. It was subsequently imported into the UK by Hurst Cars in March 2016, where it was purchased by the owner on the V5 shortly after arrival.

Upon acquiring the car, the owner had a full service carried out and replaced the timing kit, with the work completed by the renowned rally car specialist Roger Clark Motorsport (RCM) of Hinckley. Further work by RCM included a new gearbox linkage, foglight covers, and open-neck downpipes, alongside various cosmetic and mechanical repairs and maintenance carried out up to 2019, totaling nearly £8,500.

The car also benefited from parts sourced through Import Car Parts, which included brake components. In 2021, the car received a comprehensive £15,000 bodywork restoration at RCM, which included major cosmetic repairs and refinishing, ensuring the car looks as good as it drives. In addition to the bodywork renovation, the paint was carried out by Motorsports specialists SGM RacePaint. The most recent service bill from RCM dates from 2024, covering work on engine gaskets and brake pipes.

The car is accompanied by its original JDM handbook, current V5, photographs documenting the body respray and a box full of spares. It has been serviced at RCM five times and has an MOT to July 2025.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing

Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

This is an auction on behalf of a trade seller and normal auction rules apply, i.e. there is no warranty, no return policy and bids are binding with more info in our terms and conditions.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price that the seller will let the car go for. We work with sellers to set realistic reserves in line with market pricing – we don’t take on vehicles with unrealistic pricing. Reserve met / not met labeling may or may not be announced during the auction – this is just like a traditional auction house, i.e. bidders may only know when they’ve been successful at the end of the auction.

If the reserve hasn’t been met at the end of the auction then we work with the highest bidder to try to work out a deal with the seller.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
