Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

Rarely seen on the road these days, the Sunbeam Alpine a pretty drop head sports car from the golden age of motoring.

In 1956 Ken Howes and Jeff Crompton were tasked with doing a complete redesign of the Sunbeam Alpine. Their main focus was the US market like many British manufacturers. As well as refined looks, the series V featured a 1,725cc engine with twin Zenith-Stromberg carburettors which produced 93bhp; the quickest Alpine yet.

This example coming to auction has undergone an extensive restoration, which includes a full engine rebuild with new rings, big ends cylinder head reflowed and new valves for unleaded petrol, carburettors overhaul, a new stainless steel exhaust system, bumpers and with many more reconditioned and new parts, making it the ideal car to cherish and enjoy.

This listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Allan the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've always been a fan of Alpines, after sitting in a 1725 I knew it was the classic for me.

Allan was originally after a Triumph GT6, although after sitting in one he decided that it was far to small for him to comfortable enjoy the car out on the road. Sitting next to the GT6 at the time was an Sunbeam Alpine 1725, and that's where he decided that this was the classic for him to enjoy his retirement in.

Allan has thoroughly enjoyed ownership of this 1725 over the previous 3 years, he's had the car in his dry garage, reserved for sunny weekends only.

Allan was hoping to keep this example to enjoy for many years over his retirement, however with lack of use Allan has decided to bring this car to auction with us. Allan will be on hand to answer any questions on the car in the comments below.

Exterior

One of the first James Bond cars used on screen, curvaceous exterior styling, combined with brightwork gives this Alpine its iconic looks.

Wheels and Tyres

The wire wheels finished in black paint with chrome centres give this Alpine a lot of character. On this example, the wheels appear well cared for, with no sign of any obvious damage to any of the spokes from our observation, with just the slightest signs of pitting on the chrome elements.

The wheels are fitted with Maxxis MA-1 white-walled tyres and these appear to also be in great condition, dated 2019 with a good amount of tread remaining and no visible cracking or signs of age to the sidewalls.

Bodywork

The bodywork of this Alpine looks in good condition, with all the panel gaps around the car looking to align very well.

When getting really close, we did notice a dent to the drivers side wing, a smaller mark to the passengers side wing and bottom sill - take a look at the images for a closer view.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in a rich shade of dark green. The paint is finished to a lovely standard, with even coverage and colour across each panel. We did notice the odd very small and minor stone chip to the front of the car, however, you'll have to get really close to notice these.

Again, we have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this Sunbeam Alpine example looks great and in line with the low mileage and ownership, we didn't notice any chips, cracks, or discolouration on our visit. The window seals look good too and in line with the rest of the condition of the car.

The new stainless steel bumpers, chrome door handles, mirrors and window surrounds all look in good condition too.

Take a look at the exterior photos to see the convertible hood.

Interior

Finished throughout with black vinyl and chrome beveled dials, the cabin is a small performance-focused space, luxuriously finished for '60s cruising.

Seats and Carpets

The black vinyl seats have held their shape very well over the years, and reflect the restoration as you would expect for cherished and careful ownership.

A similar story is told with the door cards and black carpets.

Please take a look at the extensive media for a detailed view of the cabin

Dashboard

The dashboard is covered in a black vinyl finish and presents six black gauges in front of the driver.

The dashboard in this Sunbeam Alpine shows no signs of any major damage or scuffs.

With no warning lights displayed, the odometer showed a reading of ~54,948 miles on our visit.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

An original steering wheel is fitted, with a larger grip outer cover.

The steering wheel presents in great condition - the black gear stick looks good too.

Please take a look at the image gallery to see the detail.

Mechanics

Powered by the smooth and refined 1725cc engine, the Alpine has a lot to offer out on country B roads.

Engine and Gearbox

The 1725cc engine was overhauled in 2017 - on the day of our visit we started the car from cold, and it performed well out on the road; the engine pulled nicely, idled smoothly, and ran without fault.

Allan reports the car starts from cold with no issues and drives well with its smooth manual five-speed gearbox powering the wheels.

Take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting from cold, driving around, and for a closer look underneath the Alpine, and the smart engine bay.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension appears in good condition and provided a smooth journey on the sweeping English roads.

On our short drive in the car, it felt just as you'd expect for a Sunbeam from this era, coming to a stop without a fuss too.

The Drive

An extremely fun and engaging drive is offered with the roof down on this Sunbeam Alpine. Allan has loved using the car for short road trips around his hometown on sunny days.

The Sunbeam fired up the first time with no issues to report. On the road with Allan, the car felt tight, and as you would expect from a recently restored example.

We didn’t notice any unusual noises coming from the engine or suspension either.

Electrics and Other

We didn’t test all the electrics during our visit, but Allan reports that all of the electrics are functional and operational, in line with the rest of the condition of the car.

History and Paperwork

A lovely restored Sunbeam Alpine example that is ready to be cherished and used.

The car is coming out of a ~3 year ownership with Allan. The car has a lot of originality and with the 1725CC engine which has that little bit more oomph to it than the earlier models. The car comes with a its black convertible hood, and a spare tyre with tool kit and hammer.

Take a look at this history and paperwork media to see the MOT reports, servicing and parts this Alpine has received over its life.

In 2017 the car had a rebuilt engine with new rings, big ends, cylinder head reflowed and planed with new valves for unleaded petrol, carburettors overhaul, fuel pump re-con, new stainless exhaust system, new battery, air filters, water pump re-con, brake servo overhaul, wheel cylinders rear, new radiator and heater matrix, wiring repairs to include new main beam switch, new wiper drive, and tyres.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
