Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Consigner and Editor

A perfect blend of traditional and hi-tech engineering; the Supra continues to impress.

Released in 1986, the A70 generation Toyota Supra was launched when RWD layouts were being replaced by FWD hot hatches. Yet Toyota harnessed and improved the appeal of what was considered an outdated trend. However, this was no dinosaur. The high-efficiency multivalve engine, anti-lock braking, computer-aided geometry on the suspension layout and electronic damper control shifted the Supra upmarket and became a showcase for Toyota's technology.

Powered by a 3.0-litre 200 bhp straight-six fuel-injected engine mounted under an expanse of a bonnet, the Supra proved to fulfil its role as the brand's flagship sporting model.

For those looking for refinement, performance and comfort in a stylish and fully equipped package, buyers were also reassured by the traditional virtues of a Toyota. Offering plenty of practicality, ease of driving, reasonable running costs and of course a legendary reputation for reliability, there was no sacrifice in core values.

This time-warp example has to be one of the very best original low-mileage A70's we’ve come across. Family-owned since 1993, this 1988 automatic transmission example is a genuine UK import and has just 32,712 miles recorded on the clock. Beautifully presented inside and out, this is a rare opportunity to obtain such an original example of an appreciating Toyota icon.

The car comes with an MOT to July 2025 and its owner's wallet with booklets.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Saeed the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

A really lovely car to drive, it feels well-built and refined.

The Supra was inherited from his father-in-law who kept and stored his cars with the utmost care - Saeed has made the difficult decision to sell the Supra.

Having used and enjoyed it on several occasions, Saeed has decided to sell the car due to a lack of use.

Saeed will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

This time-warp example has a near-perfect body presentation.

Wheels and Tyres

The alloys are in good shape, with minor signs of age.

The Michelin tyres are over 10 years old but have plenty of even tread.

Bodywork

The floor pan, jacking points, boot floor, engine bay, and suspension mounts all look solid. The sills and wheel wells looked good, too.

The Supra's bodywork is free of defects, and the panel fit is excellent, with no issues observed with the shut lines - all of the doors open and close with ease.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The red paint finish is consistent in hue and has a positive lustre. The overall condition supports the car's careful storage, with no evidence of outdoor elements and very little in terms of paint ageing.

There are a handful of minor chips and light marks on the nose of the car, a small chip on the passenger door, and two small chips on the roof. There is also a light mark near the fuel filler cap. We think the Supra's overall presentation is very positive and has the potential with a little effort to be perfect.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass and windscreen is in good shape, there is just a light mark on the rear screen. All of the glass and door seals are in good shape too. We didn’t see any damage to the lights or lenses.

We spotted a number of minor but treatable surface marks on the bumpers but both are well mounted and flush to the body. The body trim is neatly presented, the nearside front corner trim has a scuff mark and small signs of age are noted on the side trim but all are free of cracks.

Interior

Almost blemish-free inside, the interior is a tribute to Toyota's quality and its owner's duty of care.

Seats and Carpets

The grey velour seats are in excellent condtion, with no signs of age.

The carpets and mats are also in good shape, there is some footwell discolouration noted under the mats.

Dashboard

The dashboard and centre console are in good condition, showing the occasional minor scuff. The switchgear and dials are neatly presented, all said to function as they should. There are small drill holes on the A-pillar trim, but otherwise, the plastic fittings have lasted very well.

The headlining and door cards are free of marks. The boot is in good shape and damp-free. The plastic boot trim shows a few signs of use.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and gear lever are cleanly presented.

There is some wear noted on the hand brake lever and its gaiter.

Mechanics

With not much more than 33,000 on the clock, this well-maintained example runs beautifully.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine fires up with no trouble, all ignition warning lights go out straight away and remained off during our visit. Aside from the expected initial exhaust cold-engine condensation, the exhaust didn’t emit any unwanted fumes. The engine sounds smooth, we didn’t experience any knocks or undulations and the car appeared to be leak-free on the day.

The engine is well presented with some signs of age on the metal castings. The hoses and ancillaries are in good shape.

The 4-speed automatic gearbox operates without fault, engaging drives with no hesitation or slackness. The overdrive wasn’t tested, but we are assured it functions as it should.

Suspension and Brakes

The car rides well, we didn’t take the car on the main roads, but the 20 mph drive around the local area suggests that the suspension dealt with the speed humps without any unwanted noises or creaks.

The car brakes evenly, and we didn’t notice any squeals, grinding or pulling to one side.

The Drive

Toyota has something of a justified reputation when it comes to mechanical durability, and it's true to say that every one of its models maintains that vision of reliability and quality. The Supra’s low mileage and clean presentation allow us to experience what the car might have felt like when new.

The 3.0-litre engine was unintrusive on the move, free of strains or untoward noises upon acceleration and pulled smoothly. The short low-speed road review didn’t properly test the handling or corning abilities, but we felt the car rides well and didn’t flag any immediate issues.

It has been mostly unused and in storage for around seven years but has been checked over by Saeed's mechanic and the car passed an MOT in July 2024, with minor advisories relating to the brakes. There have been no reports of oil pressure or engine temperature problems.

Electrics and Other

The car is completely standard with no modifications, including its original spec tape/FM player. The retractable headlight and electric window operation was tested several times with no negative results.

History and Paperwork

Retained by its previous owner for over 25 years, it has been well maintained and carefully stored.

It was originally sold by Toyota main dealer Grosvenor Garage of Guildford in February 1988. There is an invoice from its second owner who bought the car a year later. It was bought by Saeed’s father-in-law in 1993.

Saeed maintained the car over the next 26 years, using it frugally until it was passed over to the family in 2019. There are historical invoices, including a 2017 main dealer fitted alternator, head gasket and coolant replacement costing almost £1,400. There are also other Toyota and independent invoices for sundry items and maintenance. An immobiliser issue has been recently looked into and it has been fitted with a new battery.

There is also a document which outlines its pre-2005 MOT mileage recordings.

The car comes with service 8 stamps up to 25,894 miles, most appear to have been carried out by Toyota and it comes with its owner's wallet with booklets and has an MOT until August 2025.

Please note the car will not be sold with its ageless plate.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price that the seller will let the car go for. We work with sellers to set realistic reserves in line with market pricing – we don’t take on vehicles with unrealistic pricing. Reserve met / not met labeling may or may not be announced during the auction – this is just like a traditional auction house, i.e. bidders may only know when they’ve been successful at the end of the auction.

If the reserve hasn’t been met at the end of the auction then we work with the highest bidder to try to work out a deal with the seller.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
