Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

The Porsche pretender with a sensational punch, examples like this are certainly hard to find.

In 1989, Toyota introduced the Supra Turbo, which quickly established itself as the pinnacle of the company's lineup of passenger cars. The Supra model had evolved from the Celica, and Toyota positioned it further upmarket without sacrificing its sporting ability. Impressively rapid, with a 0-60 time of under 7 seconds and capable of exceeding the national speed limit twice over, the Supra Turbo was the first of Toyotas supercar contenders. Combining their famous build quality with driving dynamics without losing that unfettered RWD experience, the Supra Turbo also offered a practical and civilised driving experience around town.

This 1989 3.0i Turbo model is a genuine UK-spec car and has seen just one previous owner. The current owner has kept the car for an impressive 28 years and has ensured that it has stayed in the best possible condition. The car received a new engine, followed by a new turbo in the mid-90s and has since run impeccably since then. It comes with an MOT to August 2023 and is a superb example of Toyota's flagship model - a genuinely rare opportunity to obtain a modern classic in such original condition.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Peter the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've always garaged this car since I bought it way back in 1992.

Peter bought the Supra in 1992 to replace his Cosworth Sierra, and he views the Toyota favourably in contrast because it hasn't caused him any trouble since the engine was changed at the Toyota main dealer. While it has only seen 3,000 miles in the last 15 years, he has the mechanical confidence to keep on top of the serviceable consumables himself which has no doubt helped keep the car running as well as it does.

The combination of a lack of use and the ULEZ charge means that he has reluctantly decided to sell the car. It has a recent MOT, and Peter will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Original and complete, the exterior presentation is a tribute to the current ownership.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with the original Toyota items, the alloys are in very good condition, with just minor signs of age.

The wheels are wrapped in Kumho tyres, they are over 10 years old but retain a healthy tread. View the image gallery to see the detail.

Bodywork

When new, the car was believed to have seen a Waxoyl anti-rust treatment, and has seen further appointments to maintain its treatment. Furthermore, it has seen garage storage and therefore shows very little in terms of structural or body wear. The underside, suspension mounts, engine bay, sills and inner wings look solid throughout. The car's exterior has a handful of minor blemishes, there is a tiny mark on the near-side C pillar but nothing else significant. The panel fit and door gaps are factory perfect, with doors opening and closing without issues.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The paint is in excellent order, with a good sheen and no issues with significant swirls or imperfections. The owner has told us it has seen a little paint work in the past, but the match is near perfect throughout. There is a little sign of age on the front bumper's offside corner. The car is free of day-to-day road wear or large stone chips, with the door edges looking good.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass is in excellent condition with no damage to the windscreen. The plastics and seals have lasted well, with minimal fade and no signs of poor fitting.

Interior

A plush finish in leather for a Toyota, the cabin in 2+2 format with features like cruise control, must have been a great place to travel in.

Seats and Carpets

Finished in grey leather, the driver's seat shows age-related wear, with some homemade repairs to the bolster and bench of the seat. The other seats have fared far better and only display the lightest of wear.

The grey carpets show minor effects of age but are generally intact and like the rest of the interior simply need a good scrub. The boot shows typical use, with some marked plastics but like the cabin, is bone dry.

Dashboard

The dashboard trim and plastics have lasted well, with no distracting issues in terms of wear or damage. The facia and switches are in decent condition, with no reported issues with any of the controls and the air-conditioning was proven to be operational.

The car retains its original tape player which was not tested. The door cards and roof lining are clean with no major marks.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Both the steering wheel and gear lever are in presentable condition, with no outstanding wear. The handbrake gaiter looks to have age related wear to it.

Mechanics

With an engine replacement at ~55,000 miles, this block has only covered ~26,000 since then, plenty of life left in this Supra.

Engine and Gearbox

The car is a ready starter, with all of the expected reliability of a Toyota. With ~230BHP on tap, the Turbo engine idles sweetly with no issues reported with oil or engine temperature. No unwanted noises were heard from the engine, with any condensation exhaust smoke from the cold start soon clearing.

The engine is well presented and shows evidence of personal maintenance. The gear change is said to be slick with no problems in terms of engaging ratios.

Suspension and Brakes

The ride was typically firm but there were no drawbacks noted over the speed ramps and poor road conditions, with the components free from knocks or thuds. The "Green Stuff" brake pads are recent fitments and help the car brake confidently with no drama or vibrations.

The Drive

The car drives smoothly, with no issues with its performance and was demonstrated to pull very well. The owner has admitted it has not seen as many long journeys recently but no ill-effects of this were observed during the 20-minute drive.

No knocking or juddering was noted with the steering at any speed. The car's mid-range punch was still impressive, and its grip and comfort provide a clue why these cars were seen as a genuine Porsche alternative.

Electrics and Other

The bonnet struts are weak and need some assistance to stay up. The owner has also installed a handful of additional security measures including an immobiliser and a bypass start button. The central locking no longer works from the fob and the Cobra alarm is said to be faulty.

History and Paperwork

Coming with every MOT in the current ownership of 28 years since 1993, the exterior condition of this one former keeper car belies the age and mileage.

Originally registered at a London dealer in 1989, the car was retained by its female owner until Peter bought the car in July 1992. At approximately 55,000 miles the car was fitted with a fully reconditioned engine and fitted with an HKS stopper metal head gasket and a new radiator. A new Turbo was fitted in 1995. Used as a daily driver to his place of work and back, it then saw less use from 2008. It comes with every MOT since 1993, with the current ticket lasting to August 2023. The car also comes with its OEM chassis and engine manufacturers' Workshop manuals.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hello, the cars interior looks to have a yellow tinge. Has it been regularly smoked in or is that the camera or backlight? Thanks

Hello,
What’s the issue with the RHS bonnet stay? I could see a pair of mole grips attached in the video.
Also the most recent MOT mentions an oil leak. Where’s that coming from?

Regards
