Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

Very few can rival Toyota's reliability and, of course, its famed ease of use.

In 2006 Toyota introduced the FJ Cruiser as a contemporary rendition of the legendary FJ40 Land Cruiser, catering to the American "Sport Utility" market. One of the FJ Cruiser's biggest draws is its retro look, but the vehicle also has a number of attributes that give it a special spot in the off-road SUV market. The FJ Cruiser is much more than just a novelty thanks to its concept car appearance, unique rearward opening rear doors, triple front wipers, and fully washable interior. Its go-anywhere appeal is targeted at the weekend warrior adventure crowd but is also perfectly proven as an actual confident off-roader, largely due to the durable 4.0L V6 engine being housed on a chassis based on the 120-Series Land Cruiser Prado.

This 2011 example was imported via Japan earlier this year. Whether you decide to keep the functional appearance or load it up with the countless options and add-ons that the FJ Cruiser was designed to accept, the solid chassis and excellent presentation could make it the ideal car that you never imagined you might need.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Khuram the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The Toyota is unique around here, and people often stop and stare!

Khuram recalls his positive experiences with a Toyota Land Cruiser while he lived abroad and he instantly took to the retro-styled FJ as the potential for an occasional use car. Practical enough to accommodate his family, it was bought earlier this year and it has been stored in a dry private storage facility ever since.

The lack of use is the key decision to sell it, as his classic Triumph Stag is his main preoccupation and feels that car should be the focus of his attention. He'll be happy to answer any questions on the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

The FJ Cruiser has a cult following, but there's genuine substance and talent within the retro style.

Wheels and Tyres

The 17" steel wheels show age-related signs of surface corrosion but are fundamentally solid. A professional refurbishment would help to make them match the rest of the exterior.

All of the tyres are Bridgestone items, they're all less than three years old and have decent tread visible. View the image gallery to see the detail.

Bodywork

Externally the car has a positive level of panel fits, with even gaps. All doors open and close without issues. There were no signs of significant damage on the metal work, other than minor marks noted on the offside front door.

The underside of the car is in very good shape, with no noticeable damage observed on the chassis rails. The floor pan looks solid with no outstanding concerns in regards to the inner wings and engine bay. Please take the time to look through the hi-resolution images we have taken for a more detailed look at the exterior, for you to get a feel for the condition.

Paint

Finished in the Toyota colour of "Sun Fusion", the paint looks in good condition and has even coverage, retaining a healthy shine.

There are no signs of colour mismatch or paint flatness. There are a handful of minor chips that are to be expected with age, these are generally confined to the doors and their edges. A few marks were noted on the tailgate.

The images taken are from various angles and reflections to show you the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves and for you to make your own minds up on the condition.

Glass and Trim

The bumpers are straight and well mounted, with just a few scuffs observed on the plastic trim, door handles and loading panel.

The nearside front arch has a scuff, a 3-inch front crack on the lower front bumper and the odd corner blemish on the lower trim but overall still presents well for an off-roader. The lights and lenses are good with no issues and no problems noted with the glass.

Interior

With serious off-roading as part of its design specification, the interior is hardwearing yet stylish.

Seats and Carpets

The ventilated, water-repellent seats are in very good shape, with very little in terms of wear or damage. The car is fitted with its original hard-wearing fabric mats mounted on the rubber-like material. The floor shows minor signs of wear but is well within the acceptable state of an off-road vehicle.

The door cards and roof headlining are decent with the odd sign of age but nothing that constitutes an issue. The boot door card has a few marks, with the plastic boot lining suggesting the car has seen some life.

Dashboard

The plastics have generally worn well, with no signs of abuse or cracks. There are a few scuffs on the glovebox, but overall the facia, centre console and binnacle are well presented.

The integrated navigation console has been disconnected, but otherwise all of the functions including the air-con works. The dials, controls and switches are in good shape.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel shows minor signs of wear but nothing too distracting. The gear lever is good, with no issues with the 4WD selector.

Mechanics

An accomplished off-roader, Toyota know a thing or two about durability and reliability when you need it.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine fires up without any issues, idling without any suggestions of knocking or tapping from cold. The dashboard lights remained in check during the start-up, with no excessive exhaust smoke other than the expected condensation appearing.

The gearbox works without drama, the gear changes are slick with no reports of slippage or shudders. No leaks were observed on our visit. View the video to see the car in action.

Suspension and Brakes

The clean condition of the running gear suggests that the car has not seen much in terms of recent off-road action, and the physical condition of the springs and brakes looks very positive.

They operate with no noticeable flaws, the ride is surprisingly soft for an off-roader, with very little in terms of harshness. The braking was very effective, with no wandering or mishaps in operation. The steering was true with no vibrations noted.

The Drive

The FJ Cruiser is a heavy car, so don't expect a nimble drive, but it's well suited to the country roads and also is cosseted, smooth and docile at dual carriageway speeds. The cabin, as to be expected from a Toyota is well finished and on the day was free from rattles. Its off-road 4WD capabilities were not tested so for the short drive the car was kept in 2H, but it has a reputation for being able to deal with the rough stuff without trouble.

Electrics and Other

The car has been fitted with American spec door mirror front-facing lights, which add to the appearance of the car. All of the electrics are reported to work, with the electric windows operating with no straining.

The potential to add bolt-on parts is part of the FJ Cruiser appeal, with blanking plates and electrical provisions to enable further upgrades.

History and Paperwork

Fully registered for use in the UK, this FJ is a recent import from Japan, its distinctive looks have created a cult following over time.

Typically for an import, the car doesn't come with any specific information about its provenance but is fully registered for use in the UK and comes with a current V5 and has an MOT to March 2023. The car was imported via a specialist earlier this year and Khuram is the first registered UK owner.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
