Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

A track ready classic with a historic motorsport background spanning over the last ~45 years - this Triumph TR2 is ready and raring to go.

The Triumph TR2 was manufactured between the years of 1953 and 1955, with over 8,000 vehicles sold during that time. Originally designed to offer the public a cheap and affordable sports car, the TR2 achieved just that, often being referred to at the time as the cheapest British car to top 100mph. Engineered using a Standard Eight chassis, mayflower axle and suspension units, and originally outputting 90bhp this was a class winning sports car for the money.

Since its sale in 1955, and its subsequent purchase by owner Edwin in 1977, this particular TR2 has undergone some choice upgrades and modifications to best suit it to track use. These include a rebuilt and skimmed engine with an increased displacement of 2138cc, lightened flywheel, uprated oil pump, uprated clutch assembly, rebuilt gearbox, and much more. Coming complete with two sets of spare wheels, a whole host of spare parts, and bragging rights to having been a trophy winning car for nearly half a century, this Triumph TR2 is a fine example of motorsport history.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Edwin the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Having owned the car since 1977, Edwin has since raced it in series across the country, proving the capability of both car and driver time and time again.

Edwin originally purchased this car in 1977, looking for a car to enter into races, he happened upon this Triumph TR2 at the back of a dealership lot and simply couldn’t walk away.

Since purchasing the car Edwin has raced hundreds of laps on some of the country's most well renowned race tracks, including Silverstone itself. With cabinets full of trophies, albums full of memories, and an itch that has been well and truly scratched, Edwin has since started racing his MG which has subsequently led to the auction of his prized TR2. He will be happy to answer any questions on the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

The exterior of this classic TR2 is full of character, and is in respectable condition considering its racing heritage.

Wheels and Tyres

Featuring ultra-lite style wheels, they are in fantastic condition with no real signs of corrosion, buckling, cracks, or welding that we could see. They are a 15” rim and are adorned with Advan A048 track tyres, which appear to have a good amount of tread and don't seem to be suffering from any visible damage.

Bodywork

The bodywork is in a fair condition considering its use, there are signs of previous repairs as is to be expected from a track car, however these repairs all appear to be of a good standard. The fibreglass bonnet and boot are very flexible, as is the nature of such a material, so the panel gap along the bonnet edge is slightly uneven.

There is no visible sign of rust on the car, however there is the beginnings of corrosion visible on the lower edge of the passenger side door and lower sill.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The paintwork has been refreshed multiple times in the vehicles life, having even been green at one point, however the paintwork is now a vivid red in colour and looks to be colour matched across all panels.

Again, we have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the paintwork for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The only glass present on the vehicle is the windscreen, which Edwin actually made himself using some uprights and a plexiglass panel. This appears to be in good condition and is not cracked or damaged as far as we can tell.

The car does still have all the appropriate bits of trim, such as the chip guards on the rear wheel arches, which is a testament to Edwins attention to detail as the car has been repaired, repainted, and rebuilt several times.

Interior

With the only seat present in the vehicle being an FIA approved bucket seat with a matching in-date race harness, it’s evident that this car is very driver centric.

Seats and Carpets

The car currently only has one seat fitted, which is a racing bucket seat. This seat is still functionally perfect, however it is quite worn with some tearing to the lower areas where padding is visible through the fabric. However the seat does come with an in-date OMP racing harness meaning it will pass any scrutineering checks regarding cabin safety.

The car does not currently have any carpets fitted and is bare metal on the passenger side and a diamond plate floor panel on the drivers side. The passenger side section of the cabin is covered by a fitted tonneau cover that appears to be in nice condition with fully working fixings.

Dashboard

The dashboard features all of the original clocks, gauges, and switchgear, and all are fully working to the best of our knowledge. The plastic appears to be in fair condition with no signs of excessive damage. The dashboard has been retrofitted with a kill switch on the glovebox to comply with FIA regulations for competitive track use.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel does show signs of use, but the leather appears to be in good condition and the Triumph badge is still present, however there is some slight crazing to the surface.

The original TR2 gear knob has been swapped for an aluminium replacement which is in good condition, and the rubber gaiter is in a fair condition with no visible cracks or splitting present.

Mechanics

With the track focused build of this TR2 the mechanics have been completely overhauled, providing improved performance and reliability under high demand.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine has been forged and rebuilt, with the displacement being increased to 2138cc and outputting approximately 136bhp. The gearbox has also been rebuilt, including an uprated clutch assembly mated to the engine with a lightened flywheel to further improve performance.

Please watch our on the road video in order to see the engine starting cold as well as running and driving.

A full list of engine and gearbox modifications can be seen in our gallery images.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension has been lowered front and rear, with solid top mounts for improved rigidity, this of course makes the ride quite stiff as is to be expected with a track focused car, however it does not seem to present any knocks or bangs.

The front brakes have been upgraded to the disc and calliper set up from the TR4, with the rears using the equivalent drum set up from the TR4, meaning improved stopping power. The front callipers have been rebuilt and painted red, and fitted with EBC Red Stuff race spec pads.

The Drive

The car drives well at the tried and tested hands of Edwin, accelerating nicely and handling input from the driver without any real hesitation. Gear changes appeared to be smooth and the engine didn’t hesitate or stutter that we could tell.

Electrics and Other

A lot of wiring has been refreshed or renewed in this car as a result of the engine rebuild and other modifications made, however everything seems to work as it should - including the engine kill switch on the dashboard.

We did notice that the speedometer isn't reading as you'll see in the On the Road video.

History and Paperwork

From invoices for parts, to power run dyno print outs, there is a variety of paperwork for this car including a full spec sheet and a catalogue of images documenting its motorsport heritage.

Having first hit the road nearly three quarters of a century ago, this Triumph TR2 is unsurprisingly missing a few items of paperwork. However given the nature of this car the importance comes in the work that has been done to it, for which Edwin has created a full bodied list of all upgrades, modifications, and relevant mechanical information that can be found in our gallery images below.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
