Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

The TR3 was an instant hit with its accessibility and ability to reach 100MPH.

The Triumph TR3 was produced between 1955 and 1962, designed as a traditional roadster, it had greater power and improved braking when compared to the TR2. The TR3 campaigned in races, hill climbs, and rallies across Europe and North America with several outright, team, and class victories to its credit. The car is powered by the an inline-4 1991cc straight-four OHV engine that produces 95BHP, a much larger output thanks to the SU-H6 carburettors.

This TR3 dates back to 1956 and is a UK home market RHD, affectionately known as 'Boadicea', it is the 999th TR3 ever produced. The car was treated to a body-off ground-up restoration between 1999 and 2001 and resprayed in an eye-catching Glacier Blue.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Trevor the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

A pleasure to own for the past 2 years, a gift to myself for my retirement.

Trevor loves buying and tinkering with cars, a former trader in the industry, this TR3 was a car he bought to enjoy in his retirement. Unfortunately due to a health issue relating to Trevors eyes, he's not comfortable driving the Triumph any more and hence the reason for sale. He will be more than happy to answer any of your questions in the comments below.

This car, a UK RHD, has just 2 former keepers registered. The second owners purchased the car in 1985, and completed a full ground-up restoration between 1999 and 2001. A magazine article featuring this TR3 pointed out the '££' stickers on the rev counter, which were applied in the '70s as a reminder that going above 5,500rpm was liable to cost you in repairs!

Exterior

Beautifully shaped '50s styling finished in an eyecatching Glacier Blue.

Wheels and Tyres

The car rides on 15" wheels, painted to match the body and finished with chrome centre caps, all look in excellent condition.

The wheels are wrapped in Firestone F-560 rubber, which has an excellent amount of tread and don't show any signs of major wear or cracking.

Bodywork

A body off restoration was carried out from 1999 to 2001 to a very high standard. Last year all four wings were removed, chemically stripped, lead loaded, rustproofed, etch primed and then both sides were painted to match existing finish.

The panels appear very straight with shut lines looking good too. When opening the driver's door, we noticed the slightest mark along the sills and some very small areas of cracking in the paint around the buttons on the bonnet.

The underside of the car looks good and free from any usual corrosion, which can be seen in the mechanical photos.

Paint

Finished in a bright Glacier Blue the car will certainly turn heads wherever you go. The car was resprayed during its restoration, and more recently in Trevor's ownership he has had both sides painted. We noticed two small areas of deeper paint on the offside lower front half of the car as pictured, but overall a lovely finish with deep lustre throughout.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look at the finish of the paintwork.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks in excellent condition across the car, along with the trim. All the window rubbers and seals appear tight with no signs of excessive wear or degrading.

A magazine article on this car reports the original chrome and brightwork are fitted, it looks very good across the TR3 and in line with the age and mileage.

Interior

Two-tone grey leather combined with the character of the original steering wheel and dials makes sitting inside this TR3 a classic experience.

Seats and Carpets

The striking two-tone leather looks excellent inside this restored TR3. The seats, and door cards, look in excellent condition, when retracted the seat belts are showing slight discolouration due to being driven only on sunny days.

The grey carpeted interior tells a similar story, clean within the cabin. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look at this interior.

Dashboard

The dashboard appears in original condition and shows very little wear in line with the age and mileage of the vehicle. We believe the dials and gauges would have been given the attention they deserve during the restoration.

Trevor reports that recently he's noticed the petrol gauge is no longer working.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original Triumph steering wheel is fitted and looks in great condition inside this grand sports car. The gearstick is also in good condition and in line with the rest of the car.

Please take a look at the extensive photos and videos for a closer look at the cabin.

Mechanics

Reliable, easy to work on, and the ability to reach 100MPH, the TR3 is everything you'd want in a classics sports car.

Engine and Gearbox

As well as being given the correct cosmetic attention, the car has always received the mechanical upkeep needed to keep it sprinting. The photo of the engine bay says it all, a chrome topped engine block and a very neat engine bay show the attention to detail that's gone into keeping the TR3 in the best condition possible. At some point in its life, the car had a FRE (factory replacement engine) fitted, Trevor assumes this will have been during the restoration by the previous owner.

Receipts show Trevor replacing the rocker cover gasket earlier this year, and also in the past year he has fitted a new electronic distributor and carried out an oil/filters/spark plugs service. The car started well from a cold start with no issues, once the car had time to warm up, we captured Trevor driving the car up and down his driveway with no noticeable issues or unusual sounds. The car is fitted with a manual gearbox, no overdrive on this example.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension set-up on a TR3 is double A-arms, manganese bronze trunnion, coil springs, and tube shocks at the front, with the rear being conventional leaf springs with a solid axle and lever arm dampers.

In the past year Trevor has had the front suspension overhauled with poly-bushes fitted, and now reports suspension and brakes work well, mentioning a comfortable ride with brakes working as required too.

The Drive

Trevor loves the raw driving experience the TR3 offers. A beautifully formed British sports car with great power to weight ratio.

Electrics and Other

All electrical items are reported to work well, including the interior heater. The car was given electrical attention during its restoration between 1999 and 2001. The car has a hood and tonneau cover included within the sale.

History and Paperwork

The 999th TR3 produced, a UK home market RHD example that benefits from a solid restoration in a beautiful colourway.

Restored to a beautiful standard, this home market UK RHD TR3 is ready for some summer touring. The car comes with a good amount of history and receipts, 'Boadicea' had a full ground-up restoration carried out by Brian Robbins of Catcott Garage LTD in Somerset between 1999 and 2001.Please take a look at the photos for a view of the body-off restoration process.

More recently in Trevors ownership, the car has had an oil/filters/spark plugs service, new electronic distributor fitted, and the front suspension overhauled with poly-bushes fitted.
