Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

Styled by Michelotti and with a power jump to 104BHP, not only does did the TR4a look great, it was pretty rapid too.

The TR4a was introduced to primarily increase Triumph's success in the US market. 71,000 were produced over 6 years yet only 961 are still on the UK roads today. It was also raced, and in '66 the TR4 achieved a 1st, 2nd and 3rd class finish at the Sebring 12 hours race - impressive.

We really like this example, owned by Peter for the previous 8 years. It has a very clean MOT history as Peter has always given the car the attention it deserves, and it's UK RHD supplied and sold from new.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Peter the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

This TR4a has been my pride and joy for the last 8 years, I've loved owning, tinkering, and driving it occasionally in the summer.

Owned by Peter for the past 8 years this is a lovely TR4a. Peter has had the car regularly MOT'd every spring, and due to lack of use is looking for a likeminded enthusiast to enjoy the car.

He's going to be sad to see the car go, but some issues with his back make it hard to drive the car, and so it's up for auction with us. At some point in the cars life before Peter's ownership, the colour was changed from Triumph Racing Geen to Sapphire Blue. The car is in very good condition having been well cared for, and some choice pratical upgrades by Peter like reversing sensors.

Peter saved £3,600* when they
sold their Triumph with us.

Exterior

Beautiful curved lines drawn and designed by Giovanni Michelotti, these good looks have aged gracefully.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with 60-spoke chrome-wire wheels, they really give the car that extra sparkle. The car originally came with painted wire wheels, and Peter still has these.

Each one is in very good condition and we didn't notice any marks or curbing upon our visit. Each wheel is wrapped in period-correct rubber with a good amount of tread for the new owner. Please view the exterior videos and photos for a detailed view of the wheels.

Bodywork

The bodywork is inline with the rest of the car, in excellent condition. All the panel gaps look tight and correct.

The car was restored in 1999, and since then you can tell it has been stored correctly to avoid any corrosion. Please view the footage of the bodywork to really appreciate this car.

Paint

Finished in a deep "Sapphire Blue", the paint on this car looks really good.

The paint is even in coat and finish across all the panels. We did notice some minor scratches on the bonnet and n/s/f wing. However, you'll have to get really close to notice them. Please take a look for yourself in the exterior images and videos.

Glass and Trim

The glass and mirrors look really good on this example. We noticed a little age on the rubber window seals.

The trim is also in excellent condition, and the brightwork really shines, you can tell this is one well looked after example. Peter fitted the rack on the boot in his ownership. The car also comes with a white fibre glass "Surrey Top" as pictured.

Interior

Built to race, the TR4a has sporty touches that still look great today. We love the instrument cluster and red gear stick sleeve this car features.

Seats and Carpets

Sporty yet comforting, we love the hard-wearing seats the TR4a offers especially ones in this condition. The seats look in excellent condition on this example, with no rips found.

The carpets are black and very clean, Peter changed these in his ownership, this car has been given the attention it deserves. Please view the images for a detailed look at this interior.

Dashboard

The wood veneer dash on this example also looks great, finished with chrome bezel dials and clear and crisp units. There's a bit of dust etc visible, what you'd expect on a car from the 60's like this.

Peter tells us all the dials are working as you expect. Please view the images for a closer look at this TR4a dashboard.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

What looks to be an original Triumph steering wheel can be found here. It looks in excellent condition, as you can see from the images.

The gearstick appears to be original spec, with an aftermarket red leather gaiter added for a bit of contrast. We're big fans of the overall interior condition. The car was also fitted with overdrive, as an extra when ordered.

Mechanics

A top speed of 103MPH from the 104BHP 2.1L engine, more than enough fun for the road in the 60's.

Engine and Gearbox

Featuring a Triumph TR4a 2.1L engine, Peter has always had the car serviced and attended to when required.

The chromed engine head is in great condition as you can see from the images. Peter reports the engine and gearbox on this example are working very nicely and the car has no known issues. Please view the cold start video to watch the car start from cold.

Suspension and Brakes

In 1965 Triumph introduced the independent rear suspension. This helps to improve the ride and therefore this model and post '65 models are considerably more desirable.

Peter assures us the brakes and suspension is working exactly how it should, no notable noises present.

The Drive

The Triumph TR4a was built to be driven, "it's such a great car that's a pleasure to own and drive" Peter reports.

Any road trip, or beach day the TR4a is a given. With overdrive installed from the factory and it's independent rear suspension, sit back and relax with a smooth ride.

Electrics and Other

The car's optional extras from the factory include: 60-spoke wire wheels, heater, overdrive, occasional rear seat and a windscreen washer.

Peter has had an electric fuel pump fitted, as well an an electric screen washer for practicality.

History and Paperwork

This meticulously owned TR4a finished in Sapphire Blue, very clean black interior and being a UK RHD with only ~46,000 miles, a great example coming to sale.

A lovely example with a very clean MOT history viewable online. In addition to this, Peter has MOTs that track the cars mileage back to 1992, with it tracking correctly to the current mileage.

The car also comes with it's British Motor Industry Heritage Trust factory record certificate, which shows the engine and chassis numbers.

We've actioned checks on the following; seller ID, V5, HPi.

Hi Peter,
Do you know if the engine (cyl head) has been converted to use unleaded fuel?

Hi,

Sorry for the delayed response, Peter has had some issues with his email but I rang to check.

The car has indeed had the head converted to run on unleaded fuel is what he told us.

Best,

Kulraj – Trade Classics

Hi Graham, that’s right, a bit tricky if people are moving between tier 2 and 3. Best, Kulraj – Trade Classics
