Introduction

The Triumph Herald is an iconic British classic with gorgeous Michelotti styling in the classic saloon form.

The 1200 was produced as the second iteration with a 1147cc OHV 4 cylinder motor which had a slightly more powerful engine than the previous model, the newer model also included rubber covered bumpers, a wooden laminate dashboard and improved seating.

I have owned the car for nearly two years and have only driven the car on dry roads and mainly in the Summer months.

I would like to keep the Herald but I am down sizing to owning two cars.

I am on hand to answer any questions in the comments section below.

Market Auction

Mark, the seller, has created this listing themselves using our free Market Auction tool. Unlike our Curated Auctions, we haven’t photographed the car or written the listing, however we have completed 3 important security checks for your peace of mind.

V5C Checked

Mark provided a copy of the V5C logbook, which we verified against his photo ID for name and address confirmation.

ID Checked

Mark provided his photo ID, which we verified against the name and address on the V5C logbook.

Exterior

Beautiful 60s styling finished in vibrant 'Wedgewood Blue' with accompanying brightwork.

Wheels and Tyres

The chrome hubbed wheels are surrounded by a cream painted steel wheel.

The tyres are all as new in appearance with full tread.

Bodywork

The bodywork of this Herald is in fair condition but has areas that have been treated for surface corrosion see photographs, rear wings top and near side front wing near the front sidelight. The sills are in good condition, very straight and solid.

Slight bubbling on the driver door at the bottom edge outer skin and more extensive repair on the outer skin passenger side with filler.

See photographs to asses the condition of the car for yourself.

Paint

Finished in 'Wedgewood Blue' 26 code, the car had previous restoration works carried out and since has received touch up paint, that is a close match but more obvious on close inspection.

Glass and Trim

The glass on the triumph is very good no cracks, chips or deep scratches, window seals look good also.

The chrome bumper stops, grille, door handles and window surrounds all look in good condition, but the chrome headlights and door handles have age related patina marks, see photos.

Both windows wind up and down fully.

Interior

The car retains many of its original features as it had when first leaving the factory.

Seats and Carpets

Original seats and carpets no stains, tears or bad smells. Headlining intact with no rips, see video and photos.

Door cards and chrome handles are very good.

Dashboard

The dashboard is covered in dark wood finish presenting one main gauge with central controls clearly laid out and including the original radio.

With no warning lights displayed, the odometer shows a reading currently of 75,433 miles.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Original steering wheel presents in good condition as does the manual gear lever.

Mechanics

The Herald makes for an ideal starter classic or just plain motoring fun with great availability of spare parts.

Engine and Gearbox

Equipped with the popular 1.2L unit, the car starts promptly from cold with choke, performing all that is required on the road, steering and stopping safely.

The car drives well with its 4 speed manual gearbox, non synchro on gear 1.

See the two videos of the car starting and driving into parking spot.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension appears in good condition and provides a smooth journey around the twisty Devon lanes.

The car comes to a stop safely and has more recently been fitted with uprated Triumph Spitfire sourced front disk brakes.

The Drive

The Herald has a distinctive driving position, smell and sound of the 1960’s era.

The Herald 1200 fired up promptly, see video, and had no issues driving along the road and in and out of the corners and it turns on a dime which the model was marketed for back in the 1960’s.

Electrics and Other

To my knowledge all electrics are functional and operational except the old rear window de-mister the front heater de-mister works very well.

History and Paperwork

Ideal drive on Summer days, with room for improvement or left as it is to enjoy.

Extensive comprehensive paperwork detailing its 59 year of age.

This car has bags of originality finished in Wedgewood Blue with chrome white and cream detailing. This car is MOT exempt as a historic vehicle and it had a service and tune up in July 2024. This 1966 example Herald has its original factory under seal intact in most areas and is unmolested in many aspects. It comes with years of paperwork, old mots and receipts of work and includes photographs and other details of its journey, including a major restoration in 1998.

The car also comes with a good full size spare wheel and jack and requires fuel additive to make it run efficiently on modern unleaded petrol. Also has the original pancake air filter and a service manual, owners manual with two sets of keys.

From Trade Classics:

This is a Market Auction listing, meaning we have not visited and photographed the car - instead the seller has supplied the images and written the description. However we’ve done all our usual seller checks, including photo ID that matches the V5, and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPi that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

Viewings are welcomed, so please get in touch with us via the 'contact us' page - we just need to speak to you first on the phone, have you register on the site, and also send in valid photo ID before confirming a suitable time to visit.

Like all our auctions, if there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - the Buyer's Premium is not refundable in any instance, just like a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price that the seller will let the car go for. We work with sellers to set realistic reserves in line with market pricing – we don’t take on vehicles with unrealistic pricing. Reserve met / not met labeling may or may not be announced during the auction – this is just like a traditional auction house, i.e. bidders may only know when they’ve been successful at the end of the auction.

If the reserve hasn’t been met at the end of the auction then we work with the highest bidder to try to work out a deal with the seller.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
