Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

Fully refurbished and one of only around 1,100 made in a RHD model, this is a fantastic example of the Triumph TR5.

Often described as one of the most desirable of the Triumph models, the TR5 took the classic looks of the TR4 to the next level and added a good dose of additional power from the fuel injected straight six, this then paved the way for the future successor in the TR6. Being the TR5, only a small handful of these cars were ever produced and even fewer in a UK RHD spec. Fitted with an all-new fuel injected straight-six engine, which was uncommon in road cars at the time, some claim that this was the first British production sports car with petrol injection.

This UK RHD car if finished in "Signal Red" and presents in excellent condition, having had an extensive restoration through from 2012, to finally being repainted in 2015. The car comes with a huge history file detailing all the invoices and receipts for the restoration work, and this is a very late example of the TR5, first registered in 01/10/1968.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting John the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I love British sports cars from the 60s and 70s, the TR5 was on my list to own.

John is a definitely petrolhead, in the main his passion is in Austin-Healeys, but he tells us "This TR5 really stood out to me in its original and fully refurbished Signal Red, its a fantastic example of a TR5". John was drawn to the car because of its full body restoration as well as the mechanical work too.

John lets us know that he is, at heart, an Austin Healey 3000 lover, "I have had four and have been after a particular car for some considerable time but the owner wouldn’t sell it. Frustratingly, just after I had bought the TR5, I have been offered it. I can’t afford both unfortunately, otherwise I would keep the TR5. Thus I have to sell the TR5". He'll be happy to answer any questions on the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Hundreds of hours and significant expenditure have been invested into the restoration.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with period wire wheels of this Triumph, they present in great condition. The centre locking nut looks to be equally respectable.

A full set of Michelin tyres wrap the wheels and are dated 2013/2014 having been fitted as part of the restoration project on this car. A spare wire wheel is in place in the boot section complete with a Goodyear tyre.

Bodywork

Looking over the Triumph on our visit out to the car was a great experience; beautiful paintwork, shut lines all aligning nicely and no apparent signs of marks or any issues that we observed. It's clear that a lot of expert work has been actioned on this restoration.

Highlighted through our hi-resolution images and exterior video, we take a closer look at how the car looks across various angles. Take a look over the video for yourself for a detailed look where we take in various angles and viewpoints for you to get a real taste of what's on offer and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in "Signal Red", the car received an exterior renovation in 2015. With over 150 hours of work invested in the car in 2015 on the paint alone, the car really looks exceptional, especially in the light. This shade of colour never goes out of fashion and looks great especially contrasting against the interior.

We did note some slight signs of stone chips on the grill section but nothing that was out of the ordinary on this section. Overall a very smart looking paint finish and one to be really proud of.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

Glass and seals throughout look to be in a great condition. We didn't notice any chips or cracks in any of the glass. If we were being particularly picky, we did notice some signs of marking where the retractable hood aligns with the windscreen top, nothing that stood out too much but a normal occurrence where the hood meets the top section to secure it when travelling.

We've taken you around the car in greater detail in our "Exterior Review" video, please take the time to look over the video and see how the glass and trim look from different perspectives.

Interior

A smart contrasting interior, black with white piping and classic wood veneer panelling.

Seats and Carpets

The contrasting black leather with classic white piping looks great and shows really well across the interior. We observed no real causes for concern across the driver and passenger sections which was reflected on the bolsters, seat trim and the rear of the seats also. Having been replaced previously the carpets show nicely with no major areas of wear and tear in this area.

Over in the boot section, the carpets also showed in a lovely condition, often overlooked compared to the rest of the car being out of sight, it's apparent that the previous owners have given attention to all areas of the car which is really great to see.

Dashboard

A lovely looking wood dash greets the driver in the cabin, we noticed no issues with cracking or splitting across the dash top and overall displayed in good condition.

If we were being picky, we noticed some signs of ageing on the oil gauge but nothing that we didn't think couldn't be restored with a little detailing. There was a slight mark on the wood section of the glovebox but given the age of the vehicle wasn't out of keeping with the car.

We cover some more detailed shots of the interior in our hi-resolution gallery, take a look over the images where our aim is to take you through the interior as if you were actually in the car.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The gearstick showed in a good condition with the Triumph emblem on the stick displaying nicely albeit with a few signs of wear. For the steering, a Triumph branded three spoke wheel sat centre welcoming the driver into the cabin section.

Reflecting the quality of the rest of the car, the gearstick gaiter was in a good condition along with the cover for the handbrake. Overall, a really pleasant place to be, beautiful design work and ready to drive.

Mechanics

The hidden secret to the TR5, the fuel injected straight six produced ~150BHP.

Engine and Gearbox

Its not often you see such a clean looking engine bay but this one has definitely been well cared for. With 50 hours worth of labour invested solely in the engine rebuild, the quality shown here is a really special sight.

We noted no issues from start up which we've recorded as a cold start in the "Mechanical review" video. Take a look over the video for yourselves to hear the Triumph fire up from cold and take in the lovely sounds of the engine. John, the owner, takes the TR5 out on some local roads so you can hear for yourself on the review video how the car sounds and handles when out and about. This car has an overdrive gearbox too, and you can see John taking the car through the gears.

Suspension and Brakes

The TR5 has Spax adjustable shock absorbers in place giving the driver additional ride options and looked to be in great condition when looking over the underside of the car. Out on the drive we heard no suspension issues and observed no cause for concern when the car was on the road with handling or braking.

Much like all the other sections of the TR5, the brakes have not been neglected, working as they should whilst driving.

The Drive

Compact, handsome looking and handles well. With a full body and mechanical restoration competed on it, this TR5 is a stunner. In its own rights, a really rare car with only around 1,100 of the RHD models ever being produced. All the classic good looks from the TR4 with a vastly improved ~150BHP drivetrain.

Electrics and Other

A Motorola 010 Stereo system sits in place on the dash section and is in keeping with the age of the car having been replaced in 2002 as an upgrade. Taking a look into the boot section shows the fuel pump looking smart with a clean looking filter in place.

The TR5 also comes complete with the removable hood section and protective tonneau. Both sections show in a great light; no rips, tears or markings that we observed and are included with the sale of the car. We were pleased to note the the buttons were intact and aligned with the vehicle bodywork as they should.

History and Paperwork

A late example of the TR5, registered in October 1968, this UK RHD has undergone a full restoration, completed in 2015 and presents in excellent condition.

Having spent several thousands of pounds fully restoring the TR5 over the years, this is a car not to be missed out on. We've detailed the receipts and paperwork over in the 'Paperwork' gallery sections, it's worth noting that the paperwork shown here is roughly 1/4 of what is included, lots and lots of receipts and invoices. We've highlighted the key elements of work and labour that has gone into the restoration for the car, should you have any additional questions you'd like to ask, John, the owner, is available to answer your queries to support your purchasing decision in the comments section below.

The Triumph has benefitted from hundreds of hours worth of effort and care over its life with a full restoration completed around 2012 benefits of which are still clearly on show today with the quality shown all the way around the car. Key features such as an upgraded exhaust system, full respray in "Signal Red", new adjustable shock absorbers, replacement mohair hood and engine rebuild are just a few of the upgrades given to the TR5 as part of its full restoration project.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
