Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

An iconic British classic with head-turning Michelotti styling in a sleek convertible form.

The Herald was first introduced in 1959 and remained in production until 1971. Its body was designed by the renowned Italian stylist Giovanni Michelotti. This example is powered by a 1296cc straight-four engine, introduced towards the end of the Herald’s production run—the name deriving from the engine size and power output.

The Herald 1200 featured new rubber-covered bumpers, a wooden laminate dashboard, and improved seating. This example is finished in rich Damson bodywork, complemented by a new black convertible roof and a striking tan leather interior with wood trim.

This car has been in the vendor's family for the past three years, during which time it has been highly cherished and well maintained.

This listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Mary the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

This was my late husband’s pride and joy—he took great care of it and loved taking it out on sunny road trips.

The car belonged to Mary’s late husband, who sadly passed away last year. He enjoyed the car for two years and was meticulous in his ownership, which is evident in its current condition.

Mary starts the car once a week to keep the engine running and the battery charged, although she has never driven it. As a result, she is now bringing this lovely Herald to auction with us. She will be available to answer any questions in the comments section below.

Exterior

Eye-catching ’60s styling, finished in rich Damson paint that contrasts beautifully with the striking brightwork.

Wheels and Tyres

The 13" wheels, finished in white with chrome hub caps, enhance the car’s classic appeal. During our visit, the wheels appeared well cared for, with no obvious damage to any of the hubs, though we did notice some minor peeling on the white paint.

The wheels are fitted with Aptany Harmonic tyres, which also appear to be in great condition, with a good amount of tread remaining and no visible cracking or signs of ageing. The tyres are dated 2019.

Bodywork

The bodywork of this Herald 1200 is in great condition, with all panel gaps appearing to align well and as you would expect for a '60s Herald. During our visit, we did not spot any significant damage, though we noticed two fine cracks around the offside bonnet catch and a small area of bubbling. Additionally, there is a minor parking dent on the nearside door.

We have provided detailed observations through our high-resolution images and videos. Please take the time to review all media files for a comprehensive view of what is on offer and to assess the car's condition for yourself.

Paint

Finished in Damson (17) with a gold front grille surround, the paint is evenly applied across all panels. The car appears to have undergone some paintwork in the restoration and would benefit from a deep polish to enhance its finish further.

Once again, we have captured high-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the bodywork condition in detail.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this Herald 1200 is in great condition and consistent with the car’s mileage. During our visit, we did not notice any chips, cracks, or discolouration. The window seals also appear to be in good condition, aligning with the car’s overall well-maintained state.

The bumpers, door handles, and window surrounds are all in great condition. As seen in the exterior photos, the convertible top is in great condition with no tears or rips. Mary reports that the convertible top was recently replaced. She mentioned that her late husband rarely drove the car with the top up, as he only took it out in dry weather.

Interior

Retrimmed in tan leather, the Herald 1200 retains its original charm and character.

Seats and Carpets

The tan leather seats look great in this example. Mary mentions they were reupholstered during the Herald’s restoration. They have held their shape well, as you would expect from a car that has been cherished and carefully maintained.

The same can be said for the door cards and black carpets, which remain in great condition. For a detailed view of the cabin, please take a look at the extensive media provided.

Dashboard

The dashboard features a wood trim finish and presents two dials in front of the driver.

The dashboard in this Herald shows no signs of major damage or scuffs, and there are no warning lights displayed. The odometer showed a reading of ~94,329 miles during our visit.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A classic black Triumph steering wheel is fitted. The original steering wheel is in great condition, consistent with the car’s mileage, and the black gearstick also presents well. For a closer look, check out the image gallery for further details.

Mechanics

Powered by the later and more desirable 1.3-litre straight-four petrol engine, this Herald offers great fun when taken out on the road.

Engine and Gearbox

The 1.3L Triumph engine is regarded as a reliable unit, introduced towards the end of the Herald’s production run. On the day of our visit, we started the car from cold, and it performed well on the road—the engine pulled nicely, idled smoothly, and ran without fault.

Mary reports that the car starts from cold with no issues and drives well, with its smooth manual gearbox powering the rear wheels. Take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting from cold, driving around, and for a closer look underneath the Herald 1200 and its well-presented engine bay.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension appears to be in good condition, providing a smooth journey on the sweeping Devonshire roads.

During our short drive in the car, it felt exactly as you’d expect from a sports car of this era, coming to a stop effortlessly as well.

The Drive

This Triumph Herald offers an extremely fun and enjoyable driving experience, especially with the roof down.

The Herald 1200 started up first time with no issues to report. On the road with Mary's neighbour, Roy, the car felt tight and responsive, exhibiting plenty of power to navigate the roads. We did not notice any unusual noises coming from the engine or suspension.

Electrics and Other

We did not test all the electrics during our visit, but Mary reports that, to her knowledge, all electrics are fully functional and operational, aligning with the overall well-maintained condition of the car.

History and Paperwork

A truly lovely Herald example that has been cherished over the years, with great previous investment in its restoration and maintenance.

The car is coming out of ~10 months of ownership with Mary, having previously been registered in her late husband’s name for two years. The car boasts plenty of originality, and with the later 1.3L engine, it has that little bit more oomph than the earlier models.

This Herald comes with a recently replaced black convertible hood, 13" white/chrome wheels, a hood cover, a jack, and a variety of spare parts. Take a look at the history and paperwork media to see previous MOT reports and details of the parts this Herald has received throughout its life. The Herald 1200 is MOT and tax-exempt.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price that the seller will let the car go for. We work with sellers to set realistic reserves in line with market pricing – we don’t take on vehicles with unrealistic pricing. Reserve met / not met labeling may or may not be announced during the auction – this is just like a traditional auction house, i.e. bidders may only know when they’ve been successful at the end of the auction.

If the reserve hasn’t been met at the end of the auction then we work with the highest bidder to try to work out a deal with the seller.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
